ORIGINAL: Matt Lang this is just stupid (if true): quote:
The Nets attempted to trade for Dwight Howard in December, March and again in July, offering a package centered around Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks and four unprotected first round picks. Brooklyn also would have taken back the contracts of Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark, who were ultimately included in the four-team trade. A source says the Nets and Magic had animosity in their trade talks due to Orlando's contention that Brooklyn illegally contacted Howard in December without permission. The Nets deny meeting with Howard and the Magic have never filed charges with the NBA. http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/222953/Source_Magic_Had_Animosity_Dealing_With_Nets_On_Howard_Trade#ixzz23JgIVONc Four unprotected first round picks should've beaten what they got. Did the Nets actually want Brook Lopez on a max (for him) contract or Kris Humphries at all? I think people miss some of those key questions when they look at trade parameters and what they got or were offered. The Magic are starting over from scratch, evident by hiring Jacque Vaughn as their coach. Theyre not reloading or retooling for a playoff run. They wanted financial flexibility and draft picks and while what the Nets offered certainly provided the picks (although those figured to be low 1st rounders), the deal didnt come with the financial freedom desired. The deal they took looks bad from a talent standpoint and the picks dont seem to be as valuable, but they do get the financial flexibility and most of the picks could turn out to be better than the Brooklyn picks would have been (though we'll never know since we wont know the outcome of a Nets team with DH). Clearly, that was important to them. It had to be to take a deal like this. They certainly liked this deal better than anything else they were offered and werent interested in re-visiting the Nets in January and their probably similar offer of a guy on a max contract they didnt want, although Humphries' deal would have been attractive at that point.
