One leg was like a half inch shorter than the other. It's why he always walked like an old man and created enough of an imbalance that he put far too much load on the longer leg leading to all kinds of knee and leg problems.

It didn't help that it was back when Portland had a really incompetent medical staff and he prescribed a "heel lift" to put in his shoe to balance things out. But the heel lift actually increased the load and the amount of forward/backward sliding on the knee, contributing to his need to undergo several micro-fracture surgeries.


NBA beat writer Bill Simmons was at the 2007 NBA draft (that Oden was taken first) remembered how he walked all the way from the parking lot, through the back stage, and up to the press area behind a very tall, slightly limping gentleman with a fairly large party.
When other reporters started to approach this individual for interviews Simmons said he tried to jump in quickly for a word with whom he assumed was the retired former Celtic that Simmons had covered for years Robert Parrish, only to find out it was a substantiallly younger Greg Oden. 😳

Also probably didn’t help that Oden gained about 25 pounds of muscle in his year off from his first micro fracture surgery in his would be rookie season.
Yeah what medical staff recommends that?

Status: offline 		Gotta agree with Stephen A. about the Lakers. After 50 games, the weaknesses are locked in:

- Wing defense. Kuzma was never going to turn into a defender. It's Danny Green or bust.
- Ball handling. James facilitates but turns the ball over a lot and opponents will swarm him in the playoffs, which leads to...
- Scoring, specifically from 3 point range. Players like KCP start to hit, but in fits and spurts. I was hoping they'd trade Kuzma for a player that walks the walk.
- Team speed is lacking, although that's somewhat offset on offense when they go big.

And just how much junkyard dog mentality is there?

Status: offline 		I have to say, I'm impressed with Trae Young. Yes, he's nearly as bad defensively as he is good offensively, but he's really, really good offensively.

Young/Collins works really well.

Young may already be the best PnR PG in the league.

A lot of similarities. Including starting out on a bad team and getting the green light.
I can't overstate how important that is for confidence in a young player. Knowing you're not going to get pulled even if your D is poor, playing a ton of minutes, not looking over to the bench every time you make a mistake, and having that green light absolutely accelerates the NBA learning curve.

I like the direction of the Hawks. Collins is vastly underrated and tremendously efficient. The addition of Capela is huge, especially for a team that plays at high pace. Bringing Dedmon back fits in perfectly for bench 5. I think Hunter is going to be good. I love Huerter's size and his positional flexibility. They have a lot of nice pieces.

Of course they have to figure out how to play defense.

Sometimes you lose superstars, then you coach. I'm impressed.

I also think SGA is a legit real deal.

A little credit to Paul as well. I'm sure this is not where he wanted to be, but after a slow start, he's been really solid. Allows SGA to shine, while still controlling the game, offense and pace.

Their half court game is solid, and that could pose problems for opponents in the playoffs.

His 21.8 points in the paint per 36 minutes are the most in the 24 years for which we have shot-location data, topping Shaquille O’Neal’s mark of 20.8 per 36 in 1998-99. The team that has allowed the most points in the paint per game since the All-Star break (59.3)* is the team the Pels will face twice this week.

Despite having great pieces, he has not been able to put it together. Couldn't make Rubio/Gobert work. Bogdanovic can't defend his position. The addition of Conley and Clarkson should make them better, right? 60 games in and he's still tinkering with his starting lineup. Over the last month, they have been one of the worst defensive teams in the West.

I see this Utah team with a lot of individual talent. Not seeing it come together as an upper level team. Underachievers.

Snyder was the cocky newcomer from Duke when he came to Missouri
I was living there when he started

Never impressed with the results.

Not sure when he became good enough to run a team in the pro ranks.

Don't disagree with any of that, and I would definitely defer to your insight. I just see them as a team that could come together in an outlier series if the Clippers do their stagnant offense thing too much or they can't keep Mitchell and Conley out of the paint, or if LeBron goes cold or AD can't operate inside against Gobert, or if any top player gets injured. They can do damage when they get hot, but it's hard to stay hot over the course of a series.

Status: offline 		As part of the Jazz’s COVID-19 response, shootaround availability was done in the ZBBC media room today rather than on the court. As Rudy Gobert got finished discussing the situation, he stood up, leaned over and made it a point to touch every mic and recorder in front of him. 😂
