Not only did the Lynx defeat the Sky on Friday night, they did it in historic fashion. Minnesota set the league record for assists in a game and made field goals with 35 assists for 45 made baskets. Minnesota racked up assists primarily by getting deflections and creating easy opportunities in transition. They also worked the ball inside to Sylvia Fowles who scored 27 points and had 12 rebounds and was incredibly efficient in finding open shooters as she notched a season high five assist.

The Lynx announced before the game that Sylvia Fowles had signed a contract extension with the team. Details were not announced but Fowles said after the game she intends to finish her career in Minnesota.

Minnesota Lynx To Host Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018

Game set for Saturday July 28, 2018 @ 2:30 ct

This was mighty early for the WNBA to already have the date set but it'll be nice to have the game in the middle of the country for once. [sm=party0023.gif]

Minnesota center Fowles earns AP Player of the Year honors

NEW YORK — Sylvia Fowles had a stellar year to lead Minnesota to the top seed in the WNBA playoffs.

Her efforts earned her Associated Press WNBA Player of the Year honors on Tuesday. The award was chosen by the 15-member media panel that votes for the weekly poll.

"It means a lot," Fowles said in a phone interview. "I think a lot of people forget the work you have to put in. Like I said before, by far this is probably the hardest job to keep up with the stats and playing good throughout the season. I credit the other MVPs and players of the year for helping me up my game."

Fowles averaged 18.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and shot 65.5 percent from the field this season to help the Lynx earn a bye until the semifinals of the playoffs. She received 14 of the 15 votes with Candace Parker earning the other one. It's the second year that the AP is giving out awards for the WNBA.

Fowles headlined the AP first-team All-WNBA. Also on the first team were Tina Charles, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Candace Parker and Nneka Ogwumike. The second team was Jones, Breanna Stewart, Maya Moore, Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi.

Practice Report | Whalen Returns To Practice

September 6, 2017
Mitchell Hansen

After being out with a hand injury for about a month, Lindsay Whalen returned to practice on Wednesday afternoon for the Minnesota Lynx.

Fracturing her left hand on Aug. 3 against the Atlanta Dream, Whalen hasn’t seen any action since suffering the injury. Wednesday marked the first time since going down with the injury that she was able to go full speed at practice.

“I feel good. Obviously I was excited today to be in practice after being out a while,” Whalen said after practice Wednesday. “Now it’s just getting back into the flow and the rhythm of everything. It’s good that we have these extra days, since we have homecourt, to get back into the gym and get some good practice in before we start playing again.”

The team announced on Aug. 4 that Whalen underwent surgery to repair a fracture of her fifth metacarpal in her left hand. She was seen at practice Wednesday, almost exactly a month later, without really any protection on her non-shooting hand.

“A broken hand, you have to let it heal,” Whalen said. “Luckily, as far as playoffs, it was OK timing. But it felt good to get back out there today.”

Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve said she didn’t notice anything from a conditioning standpoint from Whalen during practice. Whalen said, although there’s nothing like playing in a game, she was working hard with Minnesota’s training staff on her conditioning for when she returned.

“There’s nothing like having Lindsay Whalen on the floor directing things. I thought she had a great practice, her vision was really good, her patience was really good,” Reeve said. “I thought she had a nice practice. . . She hasn’t played a game and the next time she plays will be in the WNBA Playoffs. But Lindsay is so experienced that I just don’t think that (rust) will be a factor.”

Although she has been absent from being on the court for the Lynx, that didn’t stop Whalen from having an impact on her team. Reeve said Whalen played a large part in somewhat of an assistant coaching role, giving tips and sharing ideas while awaiting a return.

“I leaned on her. Every time she spoke, I wanted her to repeat what she said. She sees things. We worked together a little bit and I think she learned a lot,” Reeve said of Whalen. “I think she was outstanding, whether it was a shootaround, our game prep, before a game, in timeouts, just communicating. She’s just a smart basketball mind and someone that has a future in coaching.”

“Hopefully one day I can be her assistant,” Reeve joked.

The WNBA needs more women coaches.

If you want gender equality you should say the NBA needs more women coaches. A good coach is a good coach regardless of the league.

Edit: Let me clarify. If a team says we need to hire a woman coach or a African American coach they are advancing sexism and racism. When they say women and African American's have been overlooked and I bet we can find a great coach looking at those candidates they are overcoming racism and sexism.

People do care obviously. Maybe not a high percentage, but stating that no one cares is ridiculous.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 3:55:43 PM)

2017 WNBA All-Defensive first and second teams have been announced by the league.

Beard was the obvious choice for DPOY.

Beard was joined by her teammate Nneka Ogwumike, Sylvia Fowles of Minnesota, Connecticut’s Jasmine Thomas, and Tina Charles of New York on the 1st team..

Brittney Griner (Phoenix), Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut) Rebekkah Brunson and Maya Moore (Minnesota) and Briann January (Indiana) all were named to the WNBA’s All-Defensive Second Team.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 7:08:27 PM)

Fowles continues to be a woman among girls.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 7:09:03 PM)

Mystics are really good on the offensive glass. We need to commit harder to rebounding.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 7:18:30 PM)

Yikes.

Mystics back-up Center looks to be about 4'8...

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 7:21:58 PM)

16-4 run to close out the quarter.

26-18 Los Lynx.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 7:44:46 PM)

Bench has been strong.

Montgomery is playing well enough that we can easy Whay back in, and Pierson is giving us really good minutes - especially on defense.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 7:48:11 PM)

Lynx make their final 10 shots, push the lead to 15 at the half.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 8:13:18 PM)

3rd verse same as the first.

Lead up to 20 ~halfway through.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 8:15:57 PM)

Seimone turning back the clock.

10 of her last 12, 11 in the quarter, 24 in the game (her season high was 18)

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 8:46:33 PM)

Up 24 with 3:30 left and Reeve is SCREAMING at her team during a timeout.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (9/12/2017 8:58:26 PM)

Love how the Lynx players bring the little girls from the crowd onto the floor and dance with them after a win.
