Hope its not too serious whatever she hurt. If she has to miss some time, I think the team could still finish w/one of the top 2 spots. Hopefully Seimone is back soon(hope whatever she's dealing with isn't too serious) which will help with the ball handling duties. Be nice to have her back by next Fri when L.A. comes to town.

Good as Renee has been off the bench, I don't trust her as the full time PG. So it should be nice to see Jones get more PT so she can get more confidence.

Ugly win tonight but style points don't count for anything.

And finally, good lord has Sylvia been a beast. [sm=boxing.gif]
I've watched the league from day 1 and I don't think any center has ever been as dominate as Syl has down low this season. Not even Lisa Leslie. LL extended her gm out & shot 3's & was really more of a finesse post. Would have been fun to she her and Syl battle each other in their primes.
Anyway, while the new wave is the stretch 4 & 5, Syl is just a throwback to the back to the basket, low post do the dirty work player. It fun to see. Don't know if the men's game has many of this type left. Dwight Howard was supposed to be but he's just become more of a waste of space.

Best thing Reeve did in the offseason was completely transform the offense to run through Big Syl.

And credit to the other stars on the team for embracing the change.

Also, Rebekkah Brunson deserves a ton of praise for transforming her game at age 35. In her first 13 seasons she was 2-12 from 3pt range. This year she's 21/51 (41%) in 21 games. She's giving Syl more room to work in the post and dragging a big out to the perimeter since she has to be defended out there now.

Rest of the regular season likely but she should be back for the playoffs.
Regular season ends in 4 wks. Lynx should maintain 1 of the top 2 spots which would give them another wk.

A boxer’s fracture is a type of hand fracture. It is a break or crack in the long bone that attaches to the pinky finger (the fifth metacarpal). The break may be just a bend or small crack in the bone, or the bone may break into pieces or shatter. Some fractures may stick out through the skin.

The long bones in the hand are called metacarpals.

How is it treated?

The treatment depends on the type of fracture.
•If you have an open wound with the fracture, you may need treatment to control bleeding or prevent infection.
•If the broken bone is crooked, your healthcare provider will straighten it. You will be given medicine first so the straightening is less painful.
•Sometimes surgery is needed to put the bones back into the right position.

Nice narrative but not near top of the list [sm=tisk.gif], they scored 82 pts, gave up 84. Whalen was non-factor Fri night when the team was down 6 and was hard pressed to score 50 pts before she left the game.

Actual factors:
1) Fowles in foul trouble like 4 mins into the gm & stayed in foul trouble. Couldn't stay on the court for more then 4 mins at a time before picking up a foul; earned herself a T too. Her worst gm of the season by far.
2) Poor defense; not boxing out & giving up too many 2nd chance pts. Winning shot came on a failure to put a body on some & get a defensive board. Reeve could just show them tape of 2 or 3 plays from gm5 of last yrs Finals to get the point across. Plus, 1 hot shooting Indy player.
3) Too many turnovers, 21 of 'em [:(] and bad, lazy unforced ones at that [:o]

Next gm on FSN Plus, Tue 8/8 6:00pm tipoff at ATL. The same team that couldn't score a basket in the 4th qtr last Fri.

If the team packed their defense with them for this game they should be able to finish (like they did last Fri) without Whalen. [;)]

Thanks for the update. I missed the game, but I thought going into it the Fever was a team they should stomp with or without Whalen. The Lynx just seem to have a couple of games like this every year where they play down to the competition.

Two weeks ago Lindsay Whalen broke a finger in a home win against Atlanta that moved Minnesota to 20-2 on the season. Since then the Lynx have gone 1-3 without their starting point guard. The team still sits atop the league table, but have struggled to forge a team identity with Whalen sitting on the bench in street clothes. Last night was a disappointing 62-61 loss to the Seattle Storm.

Renee Montgomery is a fine WNBA basketball player. She can hit deep threes, run a fast break and adequately defend opposing point guards. Whalen is four years older and has five more seasons of wear and tear on her body than her replacement. This makes Montgomery the quicker, bouncier, more spry player and for the most part, she’s held her own in the starting lineup. However, Minnesota’s offensive rating (points score per 100 possessions) has fallen off a cliff in the last two weeks. Montgomery simply hasn’t been effective in getting Minnesota into their offensive sets or in collapsing the defense in order to get her teammates easy baskets. Team assists are a good barometer of this. In the first 22 games of the season the Lynx averaged 21 assists per game, while they have only managed 15 in the four without Whalen.

Most of the Lynx issues over these last four games can be chalked up to adjusting to a big shakeup in the lineup rather than simply poor point guard play by Montgomery. The stability and continuity in the Whalen/Augustus/Moore/Brunson/Fowles starting five has been staggering. That lineup has started just about ever game since the middle of the 2015 season when the Lynx acquired Fowles from Chicago. Removing a piece of that group for an entire month is proving difficult to overcome.

Never like questioning players desire just because things get challenging. And in this case, I don't question this teams desire to compete with or without Whalen. They need to make shoots, period. Maya for example had more offensive rebounds then she did made FGs. Team can't afford for her to shoot 5-16 & Fowles (had 8 O-boards but) she has to be better then 6-15 and Jia & Plenette can't go 0-3 & 3-11 off the bench. They missed too many bunnies and open looks they have to knock 'em down.

Even prior to Fowles the team would have a 2nd half swoon of losing 3 in a row, 4 of 5. I think people underestimate how much they put into annually starting out 10-0, 13-0 and being 20-4, 21-4 over the two thirds of the season. Add in Reeve's reluctance to use her bench much early, you get starters looking to get a 2nd wind and teams knowing what you like to do, is going to make games more challenging IMO.
That said, adding injuries in the mix really makes things even more challenging [:-]

Loss of Whay doesn't help but the missed shots have not been due to her absence. Missed shots & some bad TOs are pure self inflicted pain on themselves. I share some of Canishoopus observation of the teams failure to execute particularly on the offensive end. .
And now what REALLY doesn't help is this news:

Crazy that in June, 30 days, the team played only 7 games. Over the final 30 days of the season they’ll play 13 gms from coast to coast. They are now in the worst stretch of the schedule over the next 2 wks. (Just got back from Seattle, pit stop home play Indy Fri night and then fly to NYC for a freakin Sunday afternoon game; fly home to play Phoenix on Tue then of to San Antonio and then to LA for Sunday ESPN2 gm and end the road trip back in Indianapolis. Then home Labor day wkend for 2 gms.

So here’s hoping they can hang on to 1 of the top 2 sports; Maya, Syl & Mone hold up, Whalen & Brunson heal quickly and completely; the rest of the team steps up BIG
and Reeve doesn’t blow a gasket [sm=thblowup.gif] ........... [sm=scared.gif]

The Lynx spent the entire summer as locks to finish with the number one seed in the 2017 WNBA playoffs, that is no-longer as bulletproof of an assumption at this point. The Lynx are 21-5 with eight games remaining. The Sparks are 20-8 with six games remaining. If LA goes 5-1 and wins the final game against Minnesota (Sunday 8/27 in LA btw), and the Lynx go 4-4, they will both finish with idential records of 25-9. The tie breaker would go to Los Angeles as the winner of the season series. That scenario is in-play but also something of a long shot.

The good news is that the Lynx will be at full strenght for the playoffs and will also finish with one of the two best records in the league. This allows them to have a two-round bye and avoid a single elimination game.

Just three weeks ago it looked like the Lynx were going to moonwalk into the playoffs. This season just got a little more interesting.

Minny, please don't take this the wrong way, but how do you know "the missed shots have not been due to her absence?" We don't know what's in their mind. They probably wouldn't even realize it if Whalen's injury has brought them down...thrown them off their game...lost some focus, etc.

I respect your knowledge of the WNBA even more than I respect DL's knowledge of the NBA. And it wouldn't completely surprise me if you know these players personally or are even a front office person posting here incognito. That would be really cool. But if those things aren't true, I'm not sure you can have a true feel for how Whalen's injury is affecting everyone else on the team.

Its all good. To answer some of your thoughts. ...

I don't pretend to know how the players feel but I have played team sports in college & club level. Don't miss understand, Whay is a HOF player and even though she's closer to the end of her career her play & presence is highly valued. But she's been out long enough for the shock of her not being there to have passed.

Now, I don't have to "know" the players to have an opinion on how they play. I do attend games (not there tonight but watching on FSN Plus [:)] ) I've either seen in person or watched on TV or my computer the recent games the team has lost. And if one has watched the last 2 gms one would have seen the team missed multiple open looks, missed multiple put backs, they are one of the best offensive teams in the league; some of the "best" players on the team shot below 35% having missed some of those makeable shots. Seattle is not one of your better defensive teams so had they converted just 1 of the many missed shots they'd have pulled out a game that really shouldn't have been as close as it was. Not to mention, Seattle a team viewed a less talented, was without their All-World PG Sue Bird.


This is not a young immature team. They are full of vets who've been there, done that and they have not executed well the last few games. Just my honest opinion.
In the end, as I mentioned, these swoons have been happing for the last 5 yrs .... the team that was so dominant early, loses a couple of gms in a row & some fans lose their minds lol. A little coming down to earth late in the season, they right the ship and usually ends up in the Finals.

And as tonight shows, they are killing the Indiana Fever, who beat them last wk, shoot better then 65% in the first half and had a over 40 pt lead.

(note the Fever are missing a couple of players due to season ending injuries so its good some of the starters will get some rest with the quick turnaround having to fly out to NYC tomorrow to play a Sunday 1pm ct afternoon gm)
The NY Liberty are healthier so it will be a bigger test coming on Sunday.

The Minnesota Lynx were on the winning end of the biggest blowout in WNBA history Friday night at Xcel Energy Center. The 59 point, 111-52 Minnesota victory topped the previous high win margin by 13 points (Seattle over Tulsa 111-65 in 2010). A litany of league and franchise record were shattered in this game, but most importantly, the Lynx got back on track.

New York has been on a bit of a roll against the top teams lately. No Whalen, no Brunson. Big Syl had an awful night despite 15 reb. Limited to 4 shots and 1 FT. She, Augustus and Monte were all -10 to -12.
