I heard that the Lynx get the first and fourth pick. Also, they get the first two picks in the second round, which means they get four of the first fourteen picks. When is the draft, by the way? April?

Lynx sign veteran C McWilliams-Franklin

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Lynx signed free-agent center Taj McWilliams-Franklin on Friday.

McWilliams-Franklin has been named an All-Star six times during her 12-year WNBA career. She ranks second in league history in rebounds (2,631) and 12th in total points (4,456).

The St. Edward´s product spent last year in New York, where she averaged 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

McWilliams-Franklin owns career averages of 11.9 points and 7.1 rebounds over 373 games for Connecticut, Los Angeles, Washington, Detroit and New York, and helped the Shock win the NBA title in 2008.

"We are very excited to have added another player with championship experience to our roster," said Lynx executive vice president Roger Griffith. "Taj has proven herself to be one of the more durable players to play in the WNBA over the course of her 12 seasons in the league. She will provide a physical inside presence, veteran leadership and a tough defensive mindset to our team -- all which further position the Lynx to compete for the WNBA championship in 2011."

In 47 postseason starts, McWilliams-Franklin has increased her production to 12.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest.

Minn has the #1, 4. 13, & 14 this year

A tall post. In order any of:

Australian Liz Cambage – 6-8
Amber Harris 6-6 PF (not a center) Xavier Univ
Jantel Lavender 6-4 C - the Ohio State
Ta'Shia Phillips 6-5 C – Xavier Univ

All are more skilled then Q. Hollingworth so I'm not sure Q will be around come opening day.

Moore currently plays PF (but where ever UConn needs her to play from gm to gm) She reminds many of Indiana Fever SF/PF Tamika Catchings in both frame & the why they play.

IMO Moore is a SF in the pros & could play some PF depending on match-ups.

As for the need to make major move due to drafting Moore, I’d say no. (at least not on the perimeter)

Depth of talent will be a nice change [:)]

It will mean Whalen & Augustus should not have to ave 35-37 mins/gm. That should just not need to happen.

Wiggins while coming off the achilles injury has come thru surgery & rehab well, she’s been putting up shots for months now & has been cleared to play recently is my understanding. Conditioning & playing in actual games appears to be her next frontier. She should be ready come camp to ease her way back into the swing. She’s perfectly capable of being the back-up PG & playing SG.

Augustus & Wright are wings and can play SG/SF spots. Augustus is far & away the more skilled offensive player with Wright being rather inconsistent but defensively things seemed to start clicking. Wright will come off the bench for sure. I expect Augustus to be in the starting lineup. Whether Wiggins or Moore starts, will be decided in camp I’d think.

There are 120 mins/gm for PG/SG/SF to go around and to me the perimeter rotation of Whalen, Wiggins, Augustus, Wright & Moore makes the Lynx deep & dangerous on the perimeter. The question of “can all these players play together ? & Are there enough mins & balls for everyone to be happy?” In spite of the ultra competitiveness of most of the crew, considering the personalities of the 5, I do believe it can & will work. Of course the more success the team has the easier it will be . I hope to get a chance to watch this rotation [sm=high5.gif]

Hollingworth has been a major disappointment and Anosike seemed to regress last year, so I could see the logic in a center. Cambage would be a great pick, but may get snapped up right after Moore. I don't see Lavender as a top 4 pick despite her Big Ten Player of the Year string.

I also wonder if they wouldn't look at a long term PG behind Whalen with #4. Wiggins filled in nicely, but she is not a natural PG and better suited to the wing.

There are no long term type PG's worthy of being picked at #4.
There are only 12 teams in the WNBA and many of them don't start a natual PG (or one taller then 5-7) let alone have one as a back up [&:] so we're actually sittin better then some w/Wiggins able to back up Whalen.
Really though, as pointed out of greater concern is the post rotation more so then the guard/wing rotation.

The Lynx traded Nicky Anosike for a 2012 1st round pick. I'm rather surprised by that move. Anosike is a young player and was an All Star in 2009. She disappointed last year, but still figures to have her best years ahead of her. They signed Taj McWilliams-Franklin who has had a nice career, but let's face it, is 40 years old and a lot shorter than the young post players that are coming out of college now. I don't know that the post options at #4 are any better or even as good as Anosike. Liz Cambage is as big a lock to go #2 as Maya Moore is to be #1. Some even think Cambage should go #1. It would probably come down to Phillips vs Lavander and I think Lavander is incredibly overrated. Phillips is 6'6" and Atlantic 10 defensive player of the year. That would seem to be a better fit with offensive players like Augustus and Moore than Lavander who more of an offensive player.

Houston is more of a 3. My guess is she will be backing up Moore. Brunson figures to be the starter at the 4 and TM-F at the 5 while they groom a center taken #4. Whalen and Augustus will of course be the back court and be backed up by Wiggins and Wright.

We'll see if the Lynx do any draft maneuvering. In addition to 1&4 they have the top two picks in the second round and some interchangeable wing players in Wright, Houston and Wiggins. Maybe they could put together a package for Tulsa and move up and get Cambage at #2.

I am guessing Harris will move to the post. She was a forward at Xavier, but the Lynx are pretty deep there. She is 6'5" so that would seem to be the logical move. They also made a strange deal of 2nd round picks by trading Jessica Breland who they drafted at 13 for St. Paul Central's Angel Robinson who was taken 22nd. Then they traded their #14 for an Australian player not named Cambage. Robinson of course provides the local angle, but she is a true PG and could back up Whalen. I would expect a strong showing by her in camp could make Wiggins or Wright available in a trade.

The roster looks pretty good right now. Pairing Moore with a fully healed Simone Augustus with Whalen running the show should be the core of a strong offense. The rotation will probably be something like:

5: Taj M-Franklin / Harris
4: Brunson / Harris /Houston
3: Moore / Houston / Wright
2: Augustus / Wright / Wiggins
1: Whalen / Wiggins / Robinson

I am pretty excited for the Lynx. This year they have to not only make the playoffs but win a round or two. Maya Moore is arguably the best college player of all time and was an obvious first pick. Amber Harris was considered to be the best of all the college bigs in the draft so very nice pick at 4. Some head scratchers trading away higher second round picks for lower ones and netting more 2nd rounders in the future. The Lynx despite their lousy record over the past many seasons are now considered by many to be the deepest team in the league.

Wiggins and Augustus hurt a lot in the last two years and you add 2 of the top 3 talents in the draft....they should do well in the playoffs (not just make the playoffs) this year. I think they can only keep a small roster (to help keep costs down) so they wouldn't have kept all their picks no matter what. 11 players on the roster.

I believe the Australian (Jarry) won't be coming for two years...

It sounds like Chicago passing on Harris was a shock to everyone. The Lynx FO apparently erupted in applause when it was announced Chicago took Vandersloot.

Angel Robinson was not
just a local angle. She apparently made quite an impression in the tournament. They see a floor general and point defender in her.  I still don’t understand why they didn’t just draft her at 13. They didn’t get anything else for trading down.
 
Jarry was acquired for the future. She is only 19. I have no idea how good she is supposed to be.
 
It sounds like the best draft day in Lynx history. Now I just hope we are all saying the same thing after the Wolves draft.
