Was nice the team got some recognition with the Strib Sports Person of the Yr for Seimone http://www.startribune.com/sports/lynx/136348433.html. and over in St Paul http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_19653425 Pioneer Press 2011 Sports Figure of the Year: The Minnesota Lynx as a team. quote:
Nobody is laughing at the Minnesota Lynx anymore. Smiling, is more like it. Who would have expected this? Yesterday's doormats are today's WNBA champions, and say what you want about whether this is the same as winning a title in the NFL, NHL, NBA or MLB, you can't deny we needed this. After 20 years without a major professional sports title, the Lynx gave us the first downtown parade in the Twin Cities since the 1991 Twins, and it felt good. In a year when the Vikings and Twins were celebrating their 50th anniversaries by threatening their worst marks in Minnesota, it felt really good. In a year when the Timberwolves were the worst team in their league and the Wild stopped filling their arena and one high-profile Gophers team after another couldn't make a postseason game or tournament ... OK, it felt great. For giving CPR to a sports scene on life support, the Pioneer Press has chosen the Lynx our 2011 Sports Figure of the Year. We could have singled out Lindsay Whalen or Seimone Augustus or Maya Moore or Cheryl Reeve, perhaps, but this was as much about all of them as it was about all of us. This was a franchise that hadn't even been to the playoffs since 2004, that had never won a single playoff series, and it rolled through the regular season to a league-best 27-7 record. quote:
Whalen says she doesn't tire of talking about the magical summer of 2011. "You dream of winning a championship,'' she said. "You don't mind remembering it or chatting about it.'' Nice way to end 2011 [sm=wine.gif]
