Lynx win the lottery - will have the #1 and #4 overall picks. NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2009 – The Minnesota Lynx won the ninth annual WNBA Draft Lottery and earned the top pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, the league announced today. Minnesota had 428 chances out of 1,000 to receive the first overall selection by virtue of owning New York’s combinations (261) in addition to its own (167). The Sacramento Monarchs, who had 420 chances, will have the second pick followed by the Connecticut Sun, Minnesota Lynx and Chicago Sky. Minnesota had the combinations for the New York Liberty’s pick due to the trade involving Sidney Spencer, Noelle Quinn and Raffaella Masciadri on May 5, 2009.

Tina Charles of UConn is considered the #1 player. She is a 6'4" center.

I would put them at considerably better than decent. There isn't a Seimone Augustus in this draft, but Charles and Appel both figure to be high impact players.

My understanding is that coming in they are supposed to be on a par with what was expected on Renee Montgomery and Lindsey Harding (Different positions but about the same talent). Probably a notch below Candice Wiggins. So as far as I can tell they should help the team but not what you might consider an impact player. I have never seen them play so I know nothing more than this. If you have more insight Sweens please share. When you say HIGH impact what does that mean.

To me, high impact means one who makes the all star team every year.

High impact to me is someone who becomes part of your top 6 and produces positive numbers. I would place those 2 as better than Harding, Montgomery or Wiggins (who is quite disappointing IMO). I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Lynx trade the pick as they already have Anosike and Hollingsworth who were draft day steals at that position.

In fairness, I said "high impact player"- not impact. I think that you can allow for the difference.

I am with Bruce. You said HIGH impact player. Impact player to me is a player that will get you 3-5 more wins. High impact player would get you even more. I agree with you that wiggins has been disappointing but she was great until Augustus went down and then she disappeared when we needed her. Harding was a #1 overall pick and Montgomery was deemed potentially a #1 pick. Neither has turned out like we hoped but my point was coming in they were regarded as about equal to Charles. I am hoping that Charles ends up better than either and as of now I expect it.

No doubt. None of the players the Sol were asking for are with the Lynx anymore. They wanted the #6 and #7 picks which turned out to be Ohlde and Hayden. A PG they had picked up who was briefly a starter and one other player (maybe Ambrosimova or Williams). The Lynx claimed the price was 2 high, kept 6&7 and blew both picks.

I don't follow the WNBA enough to know how Whalen has been doing. Is she good value for the first pick from a basketball standpoint? Obviously from a PR/Ticket Sales stadpoint she'd likely be MUCH better than anyone we could draft.
