No.

I remember there was talk of that being the goal a season or two ago. They decided that's an unrealistic goal for this season?

It might be time for me to jump on the Lynx bandwagon now that they are regularly front page news.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/30/2014 8:18:27 PM)

Lynx on a 15-0 run I think. Have a ten point lead in the third. Zero points from the bench so far.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/30/2014 8:55:10 PM)

I just noticed. Devereaux Peters is Back. Come on back Brunson and Wright.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/30/2014 10:47:42 PM)

A pretty easy Lynx Victory. 6-0. Looks like the Lynx won't have any trouble surviving until they get their team back.

Nah, you been listen to too much Dan Barrairo .... and his "Run for 41" talk [;)]

Cheryl Reeve has always been just "1 game at a time" [8D]

Seriously no way in Hell. Now I hope I am wrong about this. I think they started with 9 or 10 wins season before last but that is off the top of my head and likely wrong.

You are correct sir [sm=thumb.gif]
The Lynx started the 2012 season 10-0, lost gm 11 at home. That was the only regular season loss at home that year.

More and more people starting to watch in the bars I frequent.
That TV held its own vs the baseball and hockey games last night.
Good to see.
My girl Whalen was a killer again. Fun stuff.

Maya Moore discovers her inner Michael Jordan ... on defense
By Pat Borzi | 05/30/14

The swelling is gone. That’s a plus. Maya Moore still has a trace of a shiner and five stitches next to her right eye, residuals from that midcourt collision with teammate Seimone Augustus in pursuit of a loose ball last Friday night against New York.

The joke, of course, is that Moore got the worst of it from a hustling teammate instead of a physical Liberty defender. Moore’s WNBA-record four consecutive 30-point games to start the season set a league record. But her defensive play in the only game she failed to score 30 — Monday’s 75-72 victory in Chicago — revealed just as much about her growth as a player.

With Rebekkah Brunson months away from returning from right knee surgery, the task of guarding the prolific 6-foot-5 Elena Delle Donne fell to the 6-foot Moore. Augustus usually defends an opponent’s top scorer. But Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve needed someone physical against Delle Donne, a silky forward who can be equally dangerous down low or on the perimeter. Delle Donne managed 16 points, well below her average of 23.5 points, on 7-for-19 shooting.

“I love the challenge of it,” Moore said after practice Thursday at the Target Center. “Whenever there’s something that that needs to me done for my team, I kind of come alive and get turned on and want to get it done. That’s where my focus gets locked into. Whenever I get a task I can focus on, I get excited for that. Last game, that’s what was required of me.”

Michael Jordan became Michael Jordan the superstar in part by developing into a terrific perimeter defender. Moore sees herself on the same path. “All competitors don’t want any holes in their games,” she said.

Moore, the WNBA’s leading scorer at 29.8 points per game, won’t have a Delle Donne to contend with this weekend. The 5-0 Lynx, the WNBA’s last undefeated team, dive into home-and-home set with the San Antonio Stars, beginning Friday night at the Target Center and finishing Sunday afternoon in Texas.

But the Stars bring gifted offensive players like guard Becky Hammon, back after missing all but one game last season with a torn left knee ligament, and the improving Danielle Robinson. Moore might draw Kayla McBride, the rookie from Notre Dame who scored 30 against Tulsa on Tuesday night.

“What Maya has improved at is, she’s become a better athlete,” Reeve said. “Now, there are a lot of people that kind of go, wait a second, she was always a great athlete. No, she wasn’t actually. She was a great athlete straight up and down running, but some of her movements were lunging, off-

“Now if you look at her movements, they’re more mature. She’s staying in place. She’s using her gifts, her length, her agility, and her intelligence. That’s the biggest thing that you see with Maya. She understands the league. She understands what teams are trying to do. She’s no longer a player that you can go at. Her rookie year, we would always say, `Okay, Maya, they’re coming after you.’ But that’s no longer the case.”

Added Augustus: “Her first few years, people felt like they could attack her on that end to try to get her in foul trouble because they felt like she was a weaker defender. She took pride in not having a weakness in her game, and striving to get better every game.”

With Delle Donne, Moore concentrated on denying her the ball and keeping her out of her favorite shooting spots. Chicago is one of several WNBA teams who create mismatches by moving a versatile power forward like Delle Donne to small forward. (Los Angeles does the same with Candace Parker.) But Moore, who also plays both positions, devoted herself to the task.

“It was a combination of (watching) film and remembering things from last year as well — where she likes the ball, tendencies, her team’s tendencies with her, knowing certain spots on the floor are going to trigger certain actions,” said Moore, who had 14 points. “You let a great player like that catch the ball too many times, she’s going to burn you. I just wanted to put my most effort into not letting her catch it. If she can’t catch it, she can’t shoot it.”

On Chicago’s final possession, Moore prevented Delle Donne from catching the ball on her favorite side of the floor, the right. When the play broke down, Delle Donne ran Moore into a killer screen and headed for the top of the key, where Courtney Vandersloot held the ball out for her. Janel McCarville jumped out on Delle Donne first, then Lindsay Whalen. Delle Donne flung a desperate 3-pointer that banged off the glass and the rim, no good.

“A year ago, we would not have been saying it was a good idea to put Maya on Elena Delle Donne,” Reeve said. “She just wasn’t there yet. We had better options. Now, Maya is a player who embraces it.

“Maya is coming off four games where she scored 30-plus points a game. And Maya goes into the game saying, `My focus is on defense.’ When that happens, as a coach, it’s a joy. It’s not because you wanted it. It’s because she wanted it. That’s what made her really good.”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Moore is determined to defend like that all the time. Her goal: Become as reliable as Augustus. Or a certain sneaker mogul.

“Certain players are more gifted physically, but I know I’ve been given gifts and abilities to be a great defender and a great offensive player,” Moore said. “I don’t want to ever change my mindset and expect less of myself as a defender. Every time there’s a competition, I want to be able to dominate it. Whether it’s a defensive drill, a sprinting drill, offensive drill, I want to win. I know here, I’ll be tested and challenged in that.”

What Makes the Lynx So Good?
Kate Bennert, WNBA.com

The Minnesota Lynx have started off the 2014 season 6-0 (as of 5/30) after finishing out the 2013 season winning eight in a row on their way to a second title in three years. What's their secret? We asked Lynx players Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus, Janel McCarville and Lindsey Moore as well as Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve: What makes the Lynx so good?

Maya Moore:
The way we respond when it gets hard. It's not a statistic, it's not talent - everybody's got talent - but I think we have a selfless trust in each other and what we want to do. So when things are tough we turn on and we come together, which is not something that's easily done in this league just because it's so tough night in and night out. We just enjoy the battle.

Seimone Augustus:
Probably our unselfishness. I mean we have so many talented players that can score the ball. You know, great players who have done great things in their careers and yet still you see the balance that we have on our team. No one player outshines the other. We just kinda stick together in that aspect. We're a team that has great togetherness.

Janel McCarville:
We understand each other as a group. Collectively the team has been together for a while. This year we kinda have some pieces missing, but I think with Whalen, Seimone and Maya it's a strong core. We work hard in practice everyday, we try to work harder than the day before, and I think we believe in each other. Cheryl [Reeve] has the utmost belief in us and trust in us. She gives us systems and basically puts us on the court and lets us go.

Lindsey Moore:
I think the fact that we have so many weapons and so many scorers on the court at all times and how unselfish we are. So I donít necessarily think that if you take away Maya, for instance, that we're gonna struggle because we have JMac (McCarvile), we have Whalen - all these different options. You canít just single out one person because that just means someone else is gonna start going off. So weíre just really unselfish and I think itís hard to play against us because weíre always making the extra pass.

Cheryl Reeve:
Well I think first and foremost we have three Olympians -- we've just got really good players. But you've seen in the history of pro sports, you can have a collection of really good players that don't turn out to be a good team, and so the second part of it for us is we have really great leaders that are dependable, competitive and they're the heart and soul of our team and that mentality is contagious.

And with an outsider's perspective, Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky said this, in reference to the team's many threats, after Chicago suffered its first loss of the season to the Lynx on May 26:
They do have a lot of heads to the snake.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/1/2014 4:19:29 PM)

High Scoring first half in the rematch with the Sliver Stars. Lynx came back from 9 down in the first quarter and have a six point lead 46-40 with three minutes to go in the half.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/1/2014 5:42:14 PM)

Another game, another win.

Tan White was the unexpected hero today with 17 on 7/9 shooting.

Maya with a bit of everything. 18 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 1 block.

Dantas showed some nice passing skills, but foul trouble really limited her.

Dantas showed some nice passing skills,

Yet another Lynx player who is a good passer. I really think this is what sets the Lynx apart. It goes well beyond just sharing the basketball. They really have a knack for figuring out who will become the distributor based on the defense and just attacking. The big 3 are all great scorers and passers. Wright steps into any of those positions and does the same thing. McCarville's game bears the strongest resemblance to Vlade or Sabonis in basketball today. Not just on offense either. I have seen her pressured on defensive rebounds look up the right sideline while firing a behind the back pass right on the money to the left sideline. Now Dantas is flashing signs of it. This team is loaded with players who know how to pass and pass with a purpose.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/2/2014 8:56:12 AM)

Opponents are starting to say consistently ... "You have to be perfect defensively" to beat the Lynx.
Great compliment.
Dangerous offensive players at every position.

The new players are playing very good ball for us while we are still missing Brunson and Wright. If anybody is playing Fantasy WNBA those numbers Maya puts up are crazy good. Better than Durant and LeBron in comparison. Threes, blocks and steals are hard to come by Maya gets you around ten of those combined every game to go along with the stellar scoring/rebounding and solid assists and great shooting percents.

The 6-foot-4 2012 first-round draft pick, who is starting in place of injured veteran Rebekkah Brunson, scored a career-high 17 points to help power the Lynx to an 88-72 victory over San Antonio at Target Center. She scored eight points in a pivotal 33-10 third-quarter surge for the Lynx. She capped her milestone game with a three-pointer in the fourth quarter.

"I told our group that I appreciated when San Antonio was playing great defense and getting stops, we had the mind-set, I could see us turning and looking and looking at each other going, 'It's OK,' " Reeve said. "Let's get it back right here,"

Lynx Guard Lindsay Whalen Named Western Conference Player of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL – The WNBA today named Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen its Western Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, May 26 through Sunday, June 1. The Player of the Week award is Whalen's first of the season and sixth of her career. She is also the second consecutive Lynx player to win Player of the Week, joining Maya Moore who won the first Player of the Week of the season.

Whalen began her week with a season-high 22 points, including a key jumper in the final minutes, in a Memorial Day victory against the Chicago Sky. The point guard also dished out a team-leading four assists as the Lynx handed the Sky their first loss of the season. Whalen continued her strong play against San Antonio at Target Center on May 30, contributing 19 points, pulling down five rebounds and handing out three assists in a Lynx victory. That game also marked Whalen's second consecutive game without committing a turnover. The University of Minnesota product capped off her week with a double-double at San Antonio, notching 14 points and 10 assists in an 87-79 win that kept Minnesota unbeaten with a 7-0 record. The double-double was her first of the season and ninth in a Lynx uniform.

This season Whalen ranks 5th in the WNBA in assists (5.4 apg), 10th in scoring (16.3 ppg), 2nd among point guards in rebounding (4.1 rpg) and 6th in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.17-to-1). Whalen has scored in double figures in all seven games this season, including two games of 20+ points.

Indiana's Briann January was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week. After back-to-back victories against the San Antonio Stars over the weekend, the Lynx lead the WNBA with a 7-0 record and have matched the fourth-best unbeaten start to a season in WNBA history.

The Lynx continue their four game road swing on Friday, June 6 at Key Arena against the Seattle Storm. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. CDT and the game can be seen on NBA TV and heard on BOB 106.1 FM.

Still early in the season but so much fun stuff on this team from basketball circles

2. Minnesota will improve defensively: If you really believe Minnesota will be this bad defensively all season, then I have a great spaceship to sell you. Players arriving late to training camp is certainly part of that, but I'd probably attribute more of it to simply missing three rotation players: Rebekkah Brunson, Devereaux Peters, and Monica Wright. Although it's not easy to quantify defense, Brunson and Peters would help immensely on the boards and Wright would give them another weapon to defend the perimeter (and bring down that 40% opponent three point percentage).

And yes, I fully realize they're 7-0 - what's frightening is that they could not only get better but also become better than either of their past two title teams because rookie Damiris Dantas just adds starter-caliber talent to a team that wasn't lacking for talent to begin.

POM June - Brunson

POM Aug - Whalen (usually runner-up in POW honors but never winning the wkly award once)
ROY - M. Moore

That is simply amazing to have three different players on your team get player of the month and another get ROY. Bet that never happens again. Well not for a long time.

Practice report from 6/2 :

http://www.wnba.com/video/wnba/2014/06/03/140603reevemp4-3291290

Kent Youngblood asks a lot of questions here but it's kind of funny because he's not as hip to Seimone's game as he may think he is.
Really Seimone has been doing what she's done for the better part of 9 yrs regardless of who she's played with. Her consistancy has been truly amazing while her game has matured ... special.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/4/2014 10:03:23 AM)

Whalen has the honor of throwing out the 1st pitch at tonights Twins game.
