Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson just got their wedding gift from the WNBA -- 7 game suspensions without pay for their domestic violence arrests last month.

Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury, and Johnson for the Tulsa Shock -- and each will begin their suspensions when the WNBA season begins in June. The season is only 34 games long ... so 7 games is roughly 20% of the season.

You'll recall ... the couple got arrested after brawling with each other in their Phoenix area home. They were engaged at the time, but went through with their wedding 2 weeks later.

The WNBA President Laurel Richie says she consulted with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver -- as well as several abuse counselors and domestic violence groups -- before reaching her decision.

In addition to the suspensions ... Brittney and Glory will have to attend individual counseling sessions.

Oooh this drama just keeps getting ....... more ...... crazy ...... entertaining ?

Nice come back win for the Lynx last night. Whalen with a superb shooting performance 9-13 and 8-8. Augustus with a very rough shooting night only 7-22. Hopefully we get the real Brunson this season 14 points 18 boards last night. A look at the box score shows the Lynx out shooting Tulsa by a large margin, but the game was close due to the Lynx committing ten more TOs.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/6/2015 8:42:42 AM)

This Johnson-Griner relationship is really bizarre. The domesitic violence followed by marriage shortly after, the pregnancy, and one day after the pregnancy announced Griner filing for annulment unknown to Johnson. If Johnson can be believed Griner definitely the aggressor in the domestic case.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Lindsay Whalen scored 17 points, Maya Moore and Rebekkah Brunson each had 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Minnesota Lynx beat the Indiana Fever 78-69 on Saturday night.

The Lynx (2-0) never trailed after the opening minutes but needed a 6-0 run late in the fourth quarter to surge to a 68-59 lead with 2:58 left.

Seimone Augustus added 11 points for Minnesota, which scored 13 straight in a run spanning both halves to take a 40-27 lead.

Indiana (0-2) cut it to 60-57 on Shenise Johnson's three-pointer with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter but would get no closer.

Marissa Coleman led the Fever with 16 points, Johnson added 15, Natalie Achonwa had 14 and Briann January 11.

The Fever had a better night shooting from the field, but the Lynx had a 26-9 edge in points scored from the foul line.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/7/2015 8:15:10 PM)

INDIANAPOLIS -- If there's one thing Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve never takes for granted, it's having Lindsay Whalen as a point guard.

"She's really, really special," Reeve said Saturday after Whalen's 17 points and five assists led the Lynx over Indiana 78-69. "I'm fortunate to have someone like her who's been at the helm of this thing for my entire ride here in Minnesota."

Whalen and Reeve are both starting their sixth season with the Lynx; Whalen played her first six years in the WNBA at Connecticut. She turned 33 in May, but shows no signs of letting up. To the contrary, Whalen looks like she's having as much fun as ever on the court.

With two WNBA titles with the Lynx, Whalen already has established herself as one of the best point guards to have played in the WNBA. But games like Saturday's really do remind you of how valuable Whalen is. Keep your eyes on her, and you'll see all the way she impacts her team. Because that's constant.

The Lynx are blessed with a starting lineup that includes powerhouses Lindsay Whalen, Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson. Ron Hoskins/Getty Images

She's always had that unflappable presence no matter what's happening. But especially in her time with the Lynx, her on-court persona has become even more that of a leader who makes everyone else feel reassured.

Put it this way: If Whalen were in "The Poseidon Adventure," she'd be the character calmly saying, "It's OK. All we have to do is climb and swim our way through this capsized ocean liner, and then escape through the bottom of the ship, which is now actually above us. Don't worry, follow me."

And, if they were smart, everyone would do just that.

"Any coach will tell you how important a player like Lindsay is," Reeve said. "The reason we have such a great rapport is because of her - she embraces being that ultimate extension of the coaching staff.

"She understands valuing possessions, what's needed in the moment. She just knows when to do things."

Saturday was just the second game of the season for the Lynx, who opened Friday at home with an 83-75 victory against Tulsa in which Whalen had 26 points and six assists. This early, you would expect that some things still appear a little rough, even for the team that most consider a strong favorite for the WNBA title this season.

Minnesota had some defensive lapses that allowed the Fever to rally a few times when it seemed as if the Lynx should have put them away. On the offensive end, Reeve was irritated with herself, saying, "I did a miserable job with our play-calling balance."

But ... the Lynx still looked a lot like the team we've gotten used to seeing as one of the WNBA's best for the last four years. Obviously, having Whalen, Maya Moore, Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson in that familiar starting lineup means that it should seem like the Lynx are just back to business as usual.

"Any coach will tell you how important a player like Lindsay is. The reason we have such a great rapport is because of her - she embraces being that ultimate extension of the coaching staff."

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve on Lindsay Whalen

However, they don't have center Janel McCarville, who is sitting out this season to rest. Instead, Damiris Dantas, a 22-year-old from Brazil, is starting at center in her second season in the WNBA. The Lynx are waiting on guard Monica Wright and post player Asjha Jones to progress through some health and conditioning issues before they take the court. They are working in two rookies, post player Reshanda Gray and guard Jennifer O'Neill. And guard Anna Cruz is playing for Spain in the EuroBasket competition and isn't with the Lynx right now.

So there is going to be some degree of experimental mixing and matching people on court as the Lynx settle in during the start of this season.

"I love the feel of this team," said Moore, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds Saturday. "I think we have a really good chemistry and we work hard. Everyone is genuinely locked in and eager to execute what we're trying to do, which is great.

"We have a slightly different mindset on some of our offensive default modes, trying to get better spacing and be more aggressive with the ball. We're still getting a feel of what that looks like."

And at the heart of that is Whalen. She and Reeve always seem to be communicating, even when they're not saying anything. Sometimes, even when they're not looking at each other.

"Over the years, that's really developed where we know each other so well, we know what the other is thinking," Whalen said. "I love playing for her, and when we're having some empty possessions, I can usually know what she wants to do next. We just have a great relationship."

The Lynx are the only undefeated team already. Are they the best team? It seems as though some of the better teams of recent years are not this year so far. Phoenix, Seattle and LA are all starting out with losing records. I know it's just the start of the season and injuries could play a role down the stretch, but it seems as though the Lynx are winning titles on the odd years.

The Lynx were not the Lynx last year. The injuries to Brunson and I think it was Wright set them back. They both came back to play but not at their full capabilities. It's a shame we don't get to face that same Mercury team this year to see how that would play out.

Yes laat yr the Lynx head coach was recovering from back surgery and they opened camp with the news that Brunson, Monica Wright & Dev Peters needed verious knee proceedures or surgery. Wright missed about a 1/3 of the season Brunson more like 2/3 and neither were close to being even 80% but just well enough to get back on the court.

Read some where (back a few post from part of a Kent Youngblood story) that the Lynx lost some 40+ game to injury in 2014, still finished w/the 2nd best record in the league and the Phoenix Mercury lost 0, zero, none in 2014. It is too bad they have DT & Penny Taylor sitting out but its was by choice. Should be noted Brittney Griners 1st game back from suspention is/should be when Phx comes here Sat 6/27.

Lynx are still waiting on Wright to get over a strained calf and Spaniard PG Anna Cruz to join the team after Euro Basket tournament. So yes our Lynx are the best in the league. Some other teams are missing players due to Euro Basket too so come July things should really start to heat up. But Lynx are the team to beat.

Minnyme -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/14/2015 2:23:25 AM)

Sun 6/14 Lynx at Phx is on ESPN2 at 2pm ct as the 2nd gm of a Sunday WNBA double header.
Chicago & Indy play in the 1st game.

Pretty disappointing the Lynx kicked MCarville to the curb. They didn't treat her very well.

I'm confused by this comment. McCarville if I understand things right chose to sit out this year and I never heard of any mistreatment.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/14/2015 2:56:49 PM)

Awful first half for the Lynx. Phoenix defended the hell out of us.

Time for some halftime adjustments.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/14/2015 3:17:47 PM)

I thought this would be a huge trap game for the Lynx and so far it is looking like I was right. Down 10 points early in the third. Still time to come back.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/14/2015 3:21:22 PM)

Down 15 now. Looks like it's over.

Must be sarcasm because truth is they didn't kick her to the curb or treat her badly. She chose to sit out the season. Gotta believe for health/conditioning reasons. Plus she really enjoys being home on the Wisc family farm so doubt she's streesing.

Minnyme -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/14/2015 3:45:47 PM)

Very discombobulated effort from our locals today. Not at all a fan of our offense. Can't blame the bench for this, as Reeve chooese to live and die with her vet starters regardless how poorly they play.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/14/2015 4:29:41 PM)

Rough game on national TV against a team that should have been overmatched.

No one outside of Seimone played well at all.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/21/2015 11:48:01 PM)

lynx lose at home to the Tulsa Shock. The same shock team that was about the worst team in the League the last two years, then lost Glory Johnson. The Shock are on a six game winning streak and have taken over the west from the Lynx.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/22/2015 5:37:59 AM)

The Lynx have looked a little disjointed so far this year. The lack of a post presence is hurting them. They are also starting to show signs of age, especially Brunson.

We looked a step slow as a team. And we seemed to realize it, so we played rushed and out of control to try to make up for it. I can't remember a game where so many of our players would just lose the ball dribbling or trying to make a move.

We shot better from both the field and the line and still lost because the Shock got off 13 or 14 more shots than us (forgot which). I'm trying to figure out 13/14 more shots. They out rebounded us by 5 and had 5 less TOs. That accounts for 10 shots. Trying to figure out the other 3/4.

That's been a bid part of the disjointed play. They have really settled into a rut of playing 1 on 1. There doesn't seem to be a flow at all offensively.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (6/22/2015 12:14:46 PM)

It appears that the Shock are currently the best team in the WNBA. I'm trying to figure out how that happened. Last two seasons were horrible and then they lose Glory Johnson = Massive improvement.

Whalen hasn't had an assist in (I Believe) 6 quarters.
