The king is dead. Long live the king!

The Lynx were exposed as a flash in the pan when they were dethroned in the final game of their series. A night where Augustus looked - at best - mortal and a weak showing from the bench left the Lynx pining the end of their season - a bitter pill.

So ended 2012 v. Indiana.

The matchup of Lynx v. Mercury was perceived as the finals showdown of the 2014 season. The Lynx ended up on the short end - I would say it had a lot to do with having lost home court advantage as a result of injuries that forced some players to log too many minutes earlier in the season and prevented the players from having time to gel. Clearly the players are getting older, but I don't think this team is falling off the cliff.

Well no the Lynx were/are not a flash in the pan.

A few posts from a couple regulars at Canis:

quote:

Griner is a huge factor, but our age is looming larger.

Griner is going to be a problem for the whole league, not just the Lynx. There’s just not many 6’ 8" WNBA players, especially those that are quite athletic. McCarville is ideally suited for a role as the 7th player who can come off the bench, play physical, and facilitate on offense. But her days of matching up against Griner or Fowles or DeSouza are over.

The even bigger problem is that the run might be over, despite what coach Reeves suggests. Brunson is almost 33; Whalen is 32; McCarville is 32; and Augustus is 30. Monica Wright took a step back this year, when she needed to take a step forward. Same with Deveroux. Dantas is the X factor. She actually matched up fairly well with Griner in game 2. Somehow, someway, the Lynx need to find a couple of players to surround Maya Moore.

Where to start …. somewhat fair observation from Canis regular, but a little more light to shead here ...

Let me start with both Brunson and Wright. Note: the preseason knee surgeries didn’t make these guys whole & 100%; it simply got them back on the court to play. They worked their butts off to get back and “some” of them was better than none of them. But Brunson was a shell of herself & really I was surprised she came back at all. She won’t be going overseas any time soon, choosing to stay state side & continue rehabbing. Yes she will be 33 next season but I expect we will see her energized some next spring.

Monica had to deal with her first serious injury of her career. As the playoffs rolled around she & Brunson were often not full participants in practice nursing their respective knees . They had to try playing through pain & swelling issues. Monnie gets an incomplete. It was easy to see in person, she also was not herself. She’s improved & added a little something every yr prior to this yr, so I expect next season, healed she’ll be ready & to get back into the game in a big way …. If she’s back. I hope she stays but if she was ready to move on for a different challenge I wouldn’t blame her.

More from Nate:

quote:

Augustus is still a really good player but the miles are starting to show on the tires. Her crossover opens up fade away jumpers instead of drives into the lane and her off the ball action has become more Ray Allen running to a point instead of to a cut. McCarville is crafty as hell but doesn’t look like she can hang with the more athletic young bigs anymore. The type of help defense this squad needed from their big with their awesome perimeter players isn’t coming from Janelle. Still, she’s just such a smart player and also plays with a f-you attitude. Plus, every now and then she just trucks someone on a pick.

I enjoy Nate & company at SwishAppeal but a few points …

Lots of age talk … but that’s ok ... more of my take ....

I know he looked at ‘Mone’s off the ball action. But fact is she’s still one of the league’s best jump shooters. I expect that to continue. The knee tendonitis/knee swelling issue didn’t help her but Seimone is the type if she can walk she will play & give it her all. She’ll be 31 but with her skill set and at 6 foot is still a big SG that few can defend no matter how young they are. ‘Mone is one of the elite players that I believe has more than a few yrs left in her.

Whalen was MVP of playoffs. BUT I still had a problem with the forcing shots at time instead of running the offense. I’ve wanted to fault Reeves for some of the stagnant offensive sets that she had the team run. Maybe some of that may have had to do with the people dealing with injuries but I still think Reeve allows the team to settle on the so called big 3 to do all the scoring & at times forgetting they need to get other involved too. But back to Whay, she’s not done either. She isn’t going overseas any time soon either deciding to take time off after the World Championships.

Lynx Post:
Jmac seemed very stiff during the playoffs. Had to wonder if maybe her back or something was bothering her. She would be the only one I might worry a bit about because of her injury history. She had to do extra duty early in the season with Brunson & Peters out. I think the amount of mins caught up with her. One thing I believe is the Janel will give everything that she has for her team. No way Peters was close to healthy either. Preseason surgery didn’t help for her either. Damiris Dantas was huge & at 21 should continue to grow. The last few wks of the season she went back to Brazil because the aunt the raised her and her sisters was dying. She came back for the Phx series as her aunt passed away.

The teams interior defense was awful to non-existent. Needless to say our post core were beat up and just didn't have enough in the tank. A 90% Brunosn (vs 60%), a healthier McCarville, a more seasoned Dantas & healthier Peters, the Lynx can bring more fire to the mix. Of course more (skilled) height would be good.

Yes Phoenix is a problem with 6-8 Griner. Yes they will go into next season as the defending champs. I expect the West to be even tougher next season. I also expect that the Lynx will not start the season missing multiple core players to preseason surgeries. I expect every Lynx/Mercury matchup to be marquee. Phoenix will not curse thru the season next summer. The Lynx CAN still be an issue for Phoenix. Who by the way has less of a bench then the Lynx .

That’s the challenge every year.”

Ladies Win Gold

Team USA defeated Spain yesterday, 77-64, and received Gold Medal honors at the FIBA Women's World Cup Championships in Turkey.

The Americans rushed out to an early lead and Spain never really had a chance in this one. For a moment during the 1st quarter Team USA led 18-5, and brought a 48-29 into the locker room at halftime. After matched point-totals in the 3rd, the deficit was too much for the Spaniards to overcome.

Diana Taurasi, after successfully getting her teammates involved early in the game, finished with six-assists while Lindsay Whalen added 12 points. She connected on five-of-six attempts from the field. Simon Augustus grabbed six-rebounds and scored 10 points and Maya Moore, the '14 WNBA MVP, finished ahead of all-scorers at 18 points- she was 7 of 12 from the field.

The ladies finished this tournament undefeated (6-0). Team USA has not lost a Gold Medal Game at the World Championships since 1983.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (2/3/2015 4:12:39 PM)

Huge news, and a major blow to the defending champs, as Diana Taurasi's Russian team is paying her NOT to play in the WNBA next year:

http://espn.go.com/wnba/story/_/id/12272047/diana-taurasi-opts-sit-2015-wnba-season

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (2/3/2015 4:19:57 PM)

This could be the start of big trouble for the WNBA.

Taurasi makes 100K playing in the WNBA. She makes 1.5M playing for Russia. Players like Moore and Griner make 6-10x (or more) as much in China as they do in the WNBA.

I could easily see more stars opting to do this.

TJSweens -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (2/4/2015 7:28:04 AM)

The problem is that the women's game is much bigger over seas than it is in the U.S. The WNBA by itself does not generate enough revenue to sustain a higher level of salaries. The players make their money over seas and then play in the WNBA for the prestige of it. The problem is that it takes a toll on their bodies. At some point they are going to start picking one or the other and they aren't likely to accept 1/10th of their earning potential for the sake of playing in the NBA. I think China in particular is a growing threat to the WNBA. The NBA already subsidizes the WNBA. I don't know how much higher they are willing to go.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (2/8/2015 11:22:53 PM)

At some point they are going to start picking one or the other and they aren't likely to accept 1/10th of their earning potential for the sake of playing in the NBA.

Let me break some things down from this post:

Myth: That multiple teams overseas have the funds to lure WNBA players in mass to not play in the summer. They don’t. Some examples; Spain was the premier league at one point, no more. The team that was “buying” championships (paying big money to the world’s best- team Maya played for her first season overseas) is now defunct. You find few Americans playing in Spain any more. The top 2 Turkish teams are constantly having issues paying big time players. Whalen left one of the teams a few yrs ago. In Russia the mob plays a role with the top teams.

And there aren’t that many players in the world worth paying Taurasi type money to. DT isn’t the first WNBA player to forgo playing in the summer by the way, maybe just the most notable name I guess. DT's team by the way has the mob ties. (former sugar daddy was assassinated on the street I think back in 2009.) Anyway she says she’s taking a year break, not leaving the WNBA for good.

We may see some older (30 something) players by passing the W to have the summer off, IF, someone other overseas club is willing to pay them to take the summer off. But don’t bet on talented, high profile young players doing so. Similar to the guys, they are looking to maximize their window of earning potential and playing and making as much money as they can for as long as they can. Also, you can not underestimate the desire to play in your home country and still earn a modest living like us common folk …. and unlike their outrageously over paid male counterparts. It does take a toll but its the price these women pay to do something they love to do.

And every year, sadly, marquee players are lost due to season ending injuries and the league goes on. Now in principle not the same thing but the absence of a player is equal IMO. So I won’t miss DT one bit since I can’t stand Phx anyway [sm=club.gif].

Re China, not really. Thing about the leagues overseas, they have restrictions on how many Americans or foreigners can be on teams. It varies from country to country. Like in Korea I believe they can have just 2 on a squad but only 1 foreigner per team can be on the court at a time. In China, while Maya, Brit Griner & Sylvia Fowles are making $1+mm , teams can only have 1 American on the team. And not all the teams have the money to pay big money. Some team don’t have even 1 American. Maya’s team had never won a title until she joined them. Maya and her team are now playing for their 3rd title. So if a team can pay they hope for some return like winning titles. (Note: IIRC last season Maya thru her relationship with Jordan Brands, supplied her team flashy Nikes)

Restructuring the salary distribution might help w/some of the pay issues but generating more revenue would be key. More TV and a return of some major sponsors from the early years would be nice too.

Myth: the NBA subsidizes the WNBA tens of millions of dollars

Fact: the NBA subsidy to the WNBA is like, less than half of Kobe Bryant’s annual pay or close to one year of Ricky Rubio’s newest contract ….. that’s for the 12 team league. 6 teams are independently owned (LA, Seattle, Tulsa, Chicago, ATL & CT) the others have NBA ties. One third of the teams were in the black last season (Lynx are 1 of those) others are said to be close. The WNBA does benefits in some ways from some of the NBA’s relationships, like the apparel supplier Adidas and the ABC/ESPN relationship (all be it in a small way) . So the WNBA isn’t that big a drain on the NBA.

Maya Moore wins 3rd consecutive Chinese League title

Shanxi held on to win Game 4 at Beijing, 72-70, and earned its third consecutive WCBA championship. Maya Moore finished with 35 points, 16 rebounds and four assists, while Brittney Griner had 26 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

What a coup it would be for the Lynx to get Zahui B when she's done at the U.

Funny you should ask ... this 2015 has been viewed a pretty weak. To show how weak it's been viewed, in the last wk the Gophers Amanda Zahui B and junior Jewel Loyd of Notre Dame both declared for the 2015 WNBA Draft and should/will go #1 & #2 in the draft. Both will forgo their remaining college eligibility (Loyd 1yr & AZB redshirt Soph 2yrs) to become eligible for the draft by virtue of turning 22yrs of age this calendar yr.

OUCH !!!!! Severe blow to the Gophers hoop program. Seldom to the college ladies go pro early and losing 2 seasons out of one of the best players in the nation is simply killer.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/16/2015 7:41:41 PM)

Kyle Ratke @Kyle_Ratke
Lynx trade 11th pick, 23rd pick and 28th pick to the Liberty for Anna Cruz for the 16th and 35th pick.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/16/2015 7:42:35 PM)

Amanda Zahui B. goes #2 to Tulsa.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/16/2015 7:48:24 PM)

Anna Cruz: 28 years old, 5'9, 155 guard.

Started every game last year. 27 MPG, 7.7 PPG (46/35/69), 3.5 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.6 SPG.

She'll be a very good 3rd guard on a very good team. That 35% would be the 2nd best 3pt shooting on the Lynx last year.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/16/2015 8:57:22 PM)

Lynx take Reshanda Grey from Cal with the 16th pick

Possible huge steal. From people at Swish that know a lot more than I do:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Nate Parham

Cal teammate Reshanda Gray is my choice as the top power forward prospect in this draft because of her combination of physical tools, offensive rebounding, and the ability to finish so well around the bucket – compared to others at her position, she just doesn’t have red flags.

quote:

Gray is tough, eats glass and has a nose for the ball. Again range is limited. It is possible some above eight may like her more than the other posts already mentioned.

ESPN had her mocked at #5.
