More from Swish:

Reshanda Gray 6’ 3" Power Forward Cal

17.4PPG 7.1RPG .9BPG 56.8FG%

Accomplishments: PAC-12 Player of the year

The best way to describe Gray’s game is raw power. Stronger than she looks (and she looks strong to begin with) with great hands, she operates down low with a ruthlessness and strength that left most of the players who guarded her wishing the game was over the second she touched the ball. Capable of scoring nearly every basket against double and triple teams whose soul mission was to stop her no matter how hard they had to hit her, Gray consistently put up great numbers on offense and solid numbers on defense. She is even capable of all out dominance when the mood strikes her. Not many players can say they have scored 43 points in a PAC-12 conference game. Gray can.

We can probably add former Lynx to her resume too.

kgdabom -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/17/2015 2:03:54 PM)

Pretty much every site had Reshanda Gray as a first round pick at the very least. Some had her as a lottery pick. Reports specifically said no red flags on her. Very strange how we were able to draft her at pick 16.

Minnyme -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (4/18/2015 10:55:43 PM)

Lots of factors why Gray slipped to 2nd rnd

* The additions of Loyd & Zahui B caused a downward shift.
* Chicago really turned things at #5 when they drafted a 6-4 post player (Cheyenne Parker of Middle TN) that some had in 2nd round largely due to getting dismissed form the team after failed drug test end of Feb.
* Weak draft; many teams looked to needs w/players that fit what they want to do. Ex: NY trade w/MN got NY into the 1st round with #11 pick and they took a post who was an early 2nd rnd type by many.
*So some teams moves allowed other teams to get players they weren't sure would be on the board a week before.

All & all a good draft for the Lynx. Cruz is a given when she joins the team, likely in early July. Gray pretty sure should make the team. Kelly, she's a long shot to make the team. But camp will be good for her to build a resume that will help draw attention from overseas folks looking to fill rosters.

Thanks for the Link Minnyme. Nice to hear what coach Reeve and whoever that guy was had to say. Seems like the Lynx may have added two players that can possibly help the team and that is simply excellent.

David Levine -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/13/2015 11:40:05 AM)

Following their draft night trade to acquire guard Anna Cruz from the New York Liberty, the Lynx have made another trade for a veteran. The Lynx will send a 2016 2nd round draft pick to the Connecticut Sun for the negotiating rights to 34 year old power forward and two time WNBA All-Star Ashja Jones.

Jones spent two seasons with the Washington Mystics after being drafted in the first round of the 2002 WNBA draft. She was traded to Connecticut in 2004, and has spent the last decade a member of that franchise. She has missed the last two seasons, however, due to injury. She skipped the 2013 season due to various nagging problems, then ruptured her left Achilles tendon late in 2013, forcing her to miss the entire 2014 season as well.

Jones averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds in 28 minutes per game in her last season in 2012, though she missed 14 games that year.

Sky preparing to move on without Fowles
5/2/2015

"Prepare for the worst and hope for the best" is an age-old management strategy, but not exactly the mindset a team wants to have going into a season. The Chicago Sky, though, have had to operate in this mode since last fall in regard to center Sylvia Fowles.

And now it's getting closer to the time to drop the "hoping for the best" part. Fowles doesn't appear to have a future with the Sky, who drafted her No. 2 overall in 2008 out of LSU, unless there is a big turn of events.

The Sky have been readying for some time to move on without Fowles, even though that's not what they would prefer. Fowles declined a contract offer last September, and negotiations -- if you want to call them that -- continued sporadically.

Neither Fowles nor her agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, have commented on her situation. Chicago coach and general manager Pokey Chatman confirmed this week that Fowles wants a trade and has a specific team in mind, but said that so far no trade offers for Fowles have been sufficient.

Chatman did not say which team Fowles prefers, but several sources throughout the WNBA indicated to espnW that it is two-time league champion Minnesota.

So might the Lynx, who won the WNBA title in 2011 and '13, add yet another Olympian to their starting lineup? Maya Moore, last season's MVP, is a restricted free agent and has yet to re-sign with Minnesota. But one could speculate that has something to do with waiting as the Lynx continue to work on obtaining Fowles, if, in fact, that's going to happen.

So what will be the next move by Chicago? And what does it mean, on a larger scale, for the WNBA?

"It's the nature of the business," said Chatman, whose team made the WNBA finals last season, losing 3-0 to Phoenix. "You don't always like it. With women's professional basketball, we are still relatively young. We want to attach the college 'feel' to it, but players are well within their rights to explore different things. It's a process on both sides. And it's such an individual thing with each player. We finally have had some success here [in Chicago], but everyone has to make their own decisions.

"I can't say definitively what's going to happen. I just know it's a fluid situation, and things may change. That's where we are."

Chatman, who also coached Fowles collegiately and overseas, didn't sound very optimistic about Fowles changing her mind and staying. But she indicated that the discussions were still ongoing.

Early on, Fowles did communicate with Chicago about some things she'd like to see happen with personnel if there was a chance she might remain with the Sky. But she then said she wanted a trade, and months have passed without that happening.

The 6-foot-6 Fowles is a "core player" for Chicago, a designation that ties both her hands and the Sky's. They have control over her options to a large degree, but she can decline any trade. Or she can sit out the season.

All of which is why the Sky and Fowles have been in a stalemate for a while. Fowles' fellow U.S. national team members Diana Taurasi and Candace Parker won't be in uniform when this WNBA season starts, and Fowles might not be, either.

Phoenix's Taurasi announced in February she would take this season off to rest; she will be well-compensated for that by the Russian team, UMMC Ekaterinburg, she plays for in winter/spring. Los Angeles' Parker, who also plays for UMMC, is not planning to sit this entire WNBA season, but will take some time off to recover.

Taurasi signed a multiyear contract extension with the Mercury last August; Parker was cored by Los Angeles and hasn't signed a contract yet.

There will be a lot of questions asked -- but probably not all answered -- next week during a USA Basketball team training camp in Las Vegas. In the meantime, though, let's look a little more closely at Chicago's situation.

The Sky started in 2006, and Fowles became the face of the franchise when she was drafted two years later. That altered somewhat when Elena Delle Donne was drafted in 2013; she was rookie of the year and a big part of the Sky's first playoff team that season.

Last year, the Sky dealt with a multitude of injuries and illness, and didn't have Fowles, Delle Donne and point guard Courtney Vandersloot for stretches of the season. Chicago got into the playoffs as the fourth-place team in the East with a 15-19 record. But then the Sky got hot just at the right time, beating both Atlanta and Indiana 2-1 to take the East crown before running into the dominant Mercury in the WNBA finals.

Would the Sky, with Fowles, have a chance to make the WNBA finals again this season? Provided everyone stayed healthy -- of course, that's always a caveat with any team -- then, yes, it stands to reason Chicago could make a similar run.

Without Fowles? Then the Sky might have to depend on a younger and less-accomplished post game. To that end, drafting Cheyenne Parker, the 6-foot-4 center who had disciplinary issues in her one season at Middle Tennessee State after three years at High Point, was a calculated risk for Chicago.

Chatman did a lot of research on Parker and decided there was enough evidence in favor of selecting Parker with the No. 5 pick earlier this month. But it's a gamble the Sky wouldn't have made if they had Fowles securely in the fold.

The Sky does have veteran forward Tamera Young, known more as a defensive-minded "glue" player. Forward Jessica Breland had the best regular-season stats of her career, but then was hurt in the opening game of the playoffs and wasn't herself the rest of the way. She dealt with offseason injuries and is still trying to get closer to 100 percent.

Chicago has two 6-foot-5 players in Sasha Goodlett and Markeisha Gatling, both of whom so far have been role players. There's Clarissa dos Santos of Brazil, who at 27 is a WNBA rookie. And the Sky drafted 6-foot forward Aleighsa Welch of South Carolina.

Obviously, there is a big hole left by Fowles' absence. Chatman dealt Epiphanny Prince to New York for fellow guard Cappie Pondexter, in part to give the Sky someone who had experience with winning WNBA titles. But Pondexter can do only so much on the perimeter to offset what the Sky lose in the paint without Fowles.

Add in Delle Donne's ongoing issue in coping with the effects of Lyme disease -- as of now, Chatman said EDD is feeling good -- and you see a Sky team that is just going to have to deal with a level of uncertainty.

Chatman sounded very pragmatic about that, though. She understands that Fowles, after seven seasons with the Sky, wants to experience something different. She's far from the first player to insist on a trade and prepare not to play if it doesn't happen.

At the same time, Chicago -- despite seeming somewhat over a barrel -- has to protect its own interests. It's not just that the Sky don't want to be taken to the cleaners on a deal for Fowles. They also have to think about their own championship aspirations, and how that would be affected by having Fowles on another team, even if it's in the Western Conference. Especially a team like Minnesota, which is already so powerful.

"In the coaching world, you have to get used to making adjustments," Chatman said. "And this is a major adjustment; I'm not trying to downplay it. But when Sylvia didn't accept the extension in September, I had to start looking at this year.

"What's easy to do is bring her into the fold, if she were to come back. What's hard to do is pretend like it's not going to happen and then try to deal with it on the fly. So the preparation started with free agency, who we drafted, how we plan to play this year. We sometimes want to attach emotions to it, but we can't. It's tough, but I'm sure it's a tough decision for Sylvia as well."

Moore has resigned with us since that article was written:

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Lynx have signed WNBA MVP Maya Moore to a new multiyear contract.

The Lynx announced the deal Thursday. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Moore has fulfilled the considerable promise she had as the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft. She helped the Lynx to three straight WNBA Finals, including championships in 2011 and 2013.

She was named rookie of the year in 2011 and MVP last season after averaging 23.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists and setting the league record with 12 games of at least 30 points.

Moore released a statement saying she is "excited to continue to compete for championships with the Lynx organization."

WOW can you imagine adding Fowles to our lineup. Seriously if we didn't have to give up a core player that team would be unstoppable. Phoenix was able to bully us inside a bit with Griner but with Fowles around that would be no problem at all. Just Give Chicago their pick of our bench and our nest three first round picks.

LAS VEGAS — Several of the WNBA’s marquee players are flexing newly gained leverage to make demands on the league, including forcing trades and dictating when they’ll play.

Candace Parker is sitting out at least the first half of the upcoming WNBA season. Diana Taurasi had announced earlier that she is sitting out the entire season. Now, Sylvia Fowles may be joining them on the sidelines if she doesn’t get the trade she has requested.

Unlike Taurasi and Parker, Fowles hopes to be on the court this year, if Chicago’s willing to trade her.

"I requested a trade," Fowles said. "Chicago has done everything for me the past seven seasons, but I felt … I served my time in Chicago and I want to experience different things. I thought hard and long about it, sat down with my agent and want to do what’s best for me."

Fowles knows it won’t be easy for Chicago to trade her. She said there is only one team she wants to play for, but would name the team. If the deal doesn’t get done, the 29-year-old center didn’t rule out sitting out the season.

"If nothing happens," Fowles said, "I don’t know, we’ll go from there."

In the WNBA can't trade picks beyond the next season, so Lynx can only move 2016 picks. I expect Fowles to be sitting out the summer and the Lynx & Sky to talk again after the season. As both teams have prepared to move on without Fowles. I see more of a team shake up next season anyway.

SoMnFan -> RE: Minnesota Lynx (5/14/2015 1:55:36 AM)

A chapter in Minnesota women’s basketball history might be closing.

Center Janel McCarville told the Lynx she will not play this summer. The reason is unclear, but McCarville informed the Lynx shortly before coach Cheryl Reeve headed to Las Vegas earlier this month for the USA Basketball national team minicamp. It was, Reeve said, completely McCarville’s decision.

The team responded by acquiring veteran center Asjha Jones from the Connecticut Sun, and she will open camp Sunday as the front-runner to replace McCarville in the starting lineup.

McCarville’s decision suggests that her time playing in a Minnesota jersey has ended. She starred at the University of Minnesota, then returned for two seasons to play for the Lynx, helping the team win the WNBA title in 2013.

“Obviously she’s an icon,” said Pam Borton, who coached Lynx star Lindsay Whalen and McCarville at Minnesota when the pair helped lead the Gophers to the NCAA Final Four in 2004. “When people think of Janel they think of a fun player to watch, a flashy player. And her emotions. She wore her emotions on her sleeve.”

McCarville did not return several phone calls seeking comment.

McCarville, 32, still is ranked in the top 10 in several categories on the Gophers’ career lists. She is first in school history with 49 double-doubles and a 58.2 shooting percentage and is second in blocks and rebounds. McCarville was a center with a guard’s passing ability. She is in the top 10 in assists in Gophers history, and with the Lynx her steal and between-the-legs bounce pass to Rebekkah Brunson in the series-clinching win in the 2013 WNBA finals was one of the season highlights.

With the Lynx she averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds as the Lynx won the 2013 title. Last season she averaged 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds.

McCarville missed the 2011 WNBA after a dispute with New York, her team at the time, and also sat out the 2012 season.

Her return via trade before the 2013 season was heralded as a homecoming for McCarville, reuniting her with Whalen.

“Those two were the face of the program,” said Brenda Frese, who coached the Gophers for one season before leaving for Maryland and being replaced by Borton. “They became the role models for every girl’s basketball dreams in Minnesota.”

Reeve said McCarville was in the team’s plans for the 2015 season — the final year of her contract — right up until her agent informed the team of her decision not to play.

“She decided she didn’t want to play,” Reeve said. “It was purely her decision.”

The Lynx did, however, have Jones on their radar before getting McCarville’s news. A former University of Connecticut star, Jones was a teammate of Whalen’s on the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. Reeve said Whalen gave Jones a ringing endorsement. McCarville’s decision prompted the Lynx to acquire Jones for a second-round pick. As a purely procedural move the Lynx will put McCarville on a season suspension, which will free up her salary against the salary cap, making it possible to sign Jones.

Jones, 34, has not played in the WNBA the past two seasons because of injuries. But she has continued playing overseas. Reeve described Jones as an effective low-post scorer.

“Asjha is one of the all-time best in our league of being on the low block or just off the block, and her ability to score,” Reeve said of the 6-3 Jones. A two-time WNBA all-star, Jones has averaged 11.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 11 seasons.

“Her IQ is so high for the game, she has the ability to make right plays, whether passing, screening, all the little things,” Reeve said. “The game slows down for her.”

Like McCarville and Taj McWilliams-Franklin before her, Jones will be asked to complement a high-powered Lynx starting lineup that includes Brunson, Whalen, Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus.

Jones will be pushed in camp, with Amber Harris, Damiris Dantas and rookie Reshanda Gray all competing for time in the post.

But McCarville will be missed.

“She was probably one of the most competitive people I’ve ever been around,” said Kelly Roysland, a former Gopher who is now the women’s basketball coach at Macalester.

“When you think of women’s basketball in Minnesota, you think of Lindsay and Janel.”

Notes

• The Lynx announced the signing of guard Darxia Morris, who will take the roster spot of guard Anna Cruz. Cruz, acquired in a draft-day trade, has a commitment with the Spanish national team that will delay her arrival in Minnesota until early July.

• Rachel Jarry, expected to be in camp after missing last season, will not play this summer because of injury.

Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson just got their wedding gift from the WNBA -- 7 game suspensions without pay for their domestic violence arrests last month.

Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury, and Johnson for the Tulsa Shock -- and each will begin their suspensions when the WNBA season begins in June. The season is only 34 games long ... so 7 games is roughly 20% of the season.

You'll recall ... the couple got arrested after brawling with each other in their Phoenix area home. They were engaged at the time, but went through with their wedding 2 weeks later.

The WNBA President Laurel Richie says she consulted with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver -- as well as several abuse counselors and domestic violence groups -- before reaching her decision.

In addition to the suspensions ... Brittney and Glory will have to attend individual counseling sessions.

To be honest, I expect Fowles to sit out the season and the teams can try to workout a deal in 2016. I wouldn't have a problem giving up our 2016 first round pick but I want to keep 2017 pick as that is a very deep draft. (although some of the quality in that class are transferring & will need to sit out 1 yr thus pushing them to the '18 class if they decide to use all their eligibility.)
I'm not looking to make any deal for her this season. This group deserves this (maybe) last shot as a unit to win it all. At least in my mind anyway. [;)]

Oooh this drama just keeps getting ....... more ...... crazy ...... entertaining ?

The Lynx begin their season with the expectation of a third title in five seasons and the desire to wipe away the frustrations of 2014. Surgery kept forward Rebekkah Brunson out of all but 11 regular-season games. Knee soreness dogged Augustus for much of the summer. Knee surgeries to the team’s top backups, guard Monica Wright and forward Devereaux Peters, had them scrambling from the start.

… If there is one truth to the WNBA — whose best players regularly play nearly year-round — it is that the only thing as important to winning as talent is health. During its three-year run to the finals — which included titles in 2011 and 2013 — the team remained essentially healthy. Last year, while the Lynx were dealing with one injury after another, the Mercury didn’t lose a single game to injury.

I have never heard of any team in any sport that didn't lose a single game to injury.

I have a cousin who did something like this. The eggs were hers, but her wife did the gestating. It's a wonderful way for both parents to have a biological bond to the children. Andrew and Kiara are now about 7, and are sweet, sweet children. This is the sort of thing that makes me hopeful for the future.
