A sport that I have always respected is real wrestling. Not the pro stuff which is mostly comedy. The Gophers used to have one of the best programs in the country winning some national titles.
J Robinson got into some kind of trouble and the program has fallen on hard times. Still around top ten but not a threat to the real powers of Penn State, Ok State, Ohio State and I think Iowa might be pretty good.
However the best HS wrestler in the country a guy named Gable Steveson from Apple Valley committed to the Gophers and maybe he will start the program trending upward. The guy currently goes 250 and will wrestle in the 285 class.
He is so quick and athletic it's like he is lower weight class wrestler with the speed and agility. When he wins matches he does backflips. Heres a youtube of him against a college all American that's maybe four years older.

Here he is winning his 4th Minnesota title in seconds and the Backflip which has to be seen.

Gopher wrestlers competed in the Daktronics open with some Nebraska wrestlers and many South Dakota wrestlers and completely dominated. As expected.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (11/19/2018 12:41:02 PM)

Gophers lost 23-9 to 2nd ranked Oklahoma State. Gable Steveson came into the match ranked #5 at 285 pound division taking on the #3 ranked wrestler Derek White. Steveson had an easy 8-2 win with a near fall in the first period. White is a redshirt senior making him 4 years older than Steveson. Gable will be moving on up.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (11/20/2018 7:22:52 AM)

Gable Steveson now ranked #2 at the 285 weight class. Only once in NCAA history has a true freshman won the heavyweight title. Do yourself a favor and check him out.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (12/30/2018 11:01:43 PM)

Gophers wrestled four dual matches this weekend winning all of them easily. Steveson continues to dominate. Last years heavyweight Riley Streiffels has cut weight to 197 giving the Gophers a much more competitive wrestler in that weight class.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (12/31/2018 11:37:35 AM)

Some opponents are simply forfeiting 285 to us so there wrestler won't get hurt or suffer the humiliation. [&:]

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (1/20/2019 9:30:41 PM)

Gable now 23-0 ranked #1. This is an 18 year old true freshman wrestling in the 285 pound division.

Freshman!!!
Going undefeated is so hard, because one little slip up can cost you at any time. He has a shot at 4 time NCAA Champion.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (1/27/2019 11:22:15 AM)

7 ranked Gophers crushed the 16 ranked badgers. Gable moved to 23-0 with an 11-2 win over #11 ranked Hillger. That includes 10 victories over top 20 ranked wrestlers.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (2/5/2019 10:00:45 AM)

Gophers with an easy win against Purdue. Steveson with a major decision. The Gophers are ranked 7th in the nation and they have a good team, but it appears are not quite ready for prime time. They have easily beat every team ranked below them and have lost badly to Ok State and Iowa the two teams they faced that were ranked higher.

B1G wrestling Tournament being held at Minnesota this weekend. Gophers have a lot of ranked wrestlers in the lower to mid weights, but so many great wrestlers in the B1G. Hopefully we can get a couple of upsets and qualify a lot of wrestlers for the NCAA.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (3/10/2019 1:01:25 AM)

Gophers put 5 wrestlers into the B1G semis, but only Steveson wins. We were in 2nd place after session one but fell to 5th after session 2. Still a solid showing. They still have a shot at getting all ten wrestlers into the NCAA. Steveson will take on the 3rd ranked Heavyweight in the Nation from Penn State Tomorrow. One of two guys considered to have a shot at beating him.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (3/10/2019 7:19:58 PM)

Crap. Steveson gave up a takedown with about 20 seconds to go and loses 4-3.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (3/23/2019 12:07:47 AM)

Steveson loses to the same guy Cassar from Penn State in the Semi's same score 4-3. Crap again. He will win tomorrow and finish 3rd.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (3/23/2019 10:44:11 PM)

Just to make it official Steveson won 4-0 in the third place match.

kgdabom -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (3/29/2019 5:36:06 PM)

For what it's worth after watching the match at Nationals Cassar was awarded a riding time point that was total BS. Also Cassar was on his bike running from Gable most of the match. Should have gone to OT.

Two University of Minnesota wrestlers have been arrested according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Robert Steveson confirms his 19 year old son, Gable Steveson along with 21 year old Dylan Martinez are the subjects of a criminal investigation. Both are listed on the Hennepin County Jail roster, being held on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct. Both men are listed on the University of Minnesota's website as being a part of the wrestling team.

According to jail records, the men were arrested Saturday night at different times and different locations in Minneapolis. Steveson was apprehended at a home on 26th Avenue Southest in the Como neighborhood of Minneapolis. Martinez was taken into custody at the home where he and other wrestlers lived on 14th Avenue Southeast.

A 911 call about a possible criminal sexual conduct incident with an object, brought officers to the 14th Avenue address the previous evening on Friday at 8:40 PM.

In a statement a University of Minnesota athletics department official said, "We are aware of a situation involving two of our student athletes and are in the process of gathering more information. These students have been suspended from all team activity pending further information. Federal and state law precludes any further details at this time."

Steveson family attorney Christa Groshek said that the family is very surprised by these allegations and the fact that Gable is in custody. She urges people to not rush to judgment as the situation is still unfolding and it is unclear if he will face charges. "He's a good kid, and a good athlete" she said.

Steveson was a four-time state champion wrestler at Apple Valley High School and had finished his Freshman year at the U of M with a 35-2 record. He was the top-ranked heavyweight wrestler in the country by January of his Freshman year and his 30 consecutive wins is a top-15 consecutive wins streak in Golden Gopher history. Steveson also finished 3rd in the NCAA tournament for heavyweights this past year.

Martinez came to the Gophers from Fresno City College in California and was redshirting his Sophomore year after being a two-time California community college champion.

I have no idea if these two young men are guilty of anything - but just as a general statement: As many high profile figures throughout the entertainment/political/sports industries who have been charged and jailed for these types of crimes - how thick headed do men still have to be to commit a crime that gets them into that much trouble? I know they tend to be led around by one specific body part, but if you can't find a willing partner - pay for it, or you and your families will be paying for it for the rest of your life.

Or you might get elected President.

Good points Sweens. 38% of people don't care who you've molested if you're running for president.

The sad thing about that is those 38% of people were probably molested themselves so they think it's a normal thing.....

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Wrestling (6/18/2019 1:56:07 PM)

Both of them have been released without charges being filed. The police are continuing the investigation.
