So if we are looking just at starters (nickel formation), we need:

G
3 WR
DT

Early round preference between closely ranked players
1-OG
2-TE
3-DT

we need to select a tight end within the first two rounds - vastly improves our quality and helps get rudy's salary off the books....

i'd accept rudolph staying with the team at about $3m on a one year deal, but i still think we need a new starter....

rookie/cheap rudy/morgan...conklyn to the practice squad....

I get TE completely, but as of right now who is our 3rd WR?

Who is our backup running back? I hope that most of the draft picks are offensive players. We need a lot of help all over the offense.

Daniel Carlson? Mike Hughs? Everson griffin?

Griffen was a punt return gunner right? He would be a hella TE.

6' 7" Rudolph to DE.

Treadwell to rangy LB to placate Phil!

Since Hughes is out, guess Carlson will be the first two-way, err two-team player.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/2/2019 7:04:34 PM)

Shit, seriously I'll bet Griffen would definitely be better in yac.

Just needs an offseason to work on catching. Route running for Rudy is just kind of fade out there, so Griff can do that.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/3/2019 2:40:40 PM)

I don't see Abdullah being the backup running back. I could be wrong.

I like Boone a lot.

And RB is the easiest position in the game to find a guy off the street in you need one.

i agree on boone...imo we don't draft a rb until the 6th/7th, and that's only if we really love him....

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (4/3/2019 10:00:18 PM)

It's just that it seems that rookie running backs are at their prime and our offense needs some juice.

As opposed to 23 year-old Mike Boone, who is 1 year out of college and has 13 NFL touches breaking down his body?

Also look at Thielen, Diggs, Beebe, etc. It is almost like RB. No reason to use more than a 5th or 6th round pick on one as there are many out there. Now TE is different. Hard to find a good one w/o spending a top 2nd/3rd round pick.

Boone and Abdullah are fine back-ups ... with Boone looking like he maybe has a chance to be decent #2 RB eventually and Abdullah having enough - along with being the KR - to be worth keeping as #3 competition.

But neither are as good as Murray, neither provide much of a contrast to Cook (i.e., big back or pounder etc), and neither can protect well enough to be consistently dependable on passing downs. (not that its easy to find that in the draft)

Given the Kubiak/Zimmer directive and Cook's durability issues (Boone got dinged in limited time last year as well) – the team may address RB earlier than most of us think. It would not surprise me in the 3-4 rd.

There are so many needs on Offense ... I can justify 2 OGs, OT (to shift Reiff or compete with Hill), RB, TE2, WR3, and QB3. The draft is always interesting but this year, I sense a draftroom with some desperation in the air as these guys try and right the ship / keep their jobs.

You said it much better than I did and I agree. If feels like we have more needs than earlier draft picks. I really don't count fifth round and on. They are like priority undrafted free agents. The difference is paper thin.
