Besides New England, Dallas and Seattle are deficient at the tight end position.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2835403-every-nfl-teams-biggest-remaining-offseason-need

With Dallas needing a TE all we have to do is figure out a way to make Zack Martin for Rudolph work. I got it. We send Kline along with Rudolph. Done and Done.

One thing I wouldn't be surprised regarding the starting 5 oline would be:

Reiff
Kline
Bradbury
Samia
O'Neal

Elf was bad last year and by no means should be penciled in as a starter unless he proves worthy.

Samia seems like the type of guy that you can't keep out of the line up. The "nasty" he and Bradbury can bring is something this unit desperately needs.

I completely agree. I hope Kline is at least better than Elflein was last year. One not so great possibility is that both Elflein and Kline are no better than they were last year.

One problem for Elflein is that he is rather undersized for a guard. He would have to go against one of those Bear DT's. I know we will scheme for that, but will he hold up to a nose tackle on running plays or an athletic 3 tech on passing downs?

I feel confident that Kubiak will ensure that the best group is out there. Last year, that didn't always seem to be the case, though maybe none of the second unit was any better than the starters. Given that they realize how awful the G-C-G combo of Compton-Elflein-Remmers was (they've replaced them all), it would have been useful to see one of the backups in there last year. They did re-sign Brett Jones, after all, so he must have some ability.

Dora was the first off the bench and seemed over matched as well.

Jones didn't appear to be horrible the first 3 games at C. I know that isn't much of an endorsement.

We hear that Zimmer wants us to run the ball better. We also know that Cousins threw under duress more than any other quarterback in the league. Some of that may be on Cousins not getting rid of the ball quickly enough, but certainly it has to be factored by insufficient pass blocking. So we had a number one tight end who reportedly wasn't a willing blocker. He's part of the run and pass blocking. Don't you think that by replacing him with one who is a willing blocker can help on both aspects of the offense? I would like to see more of Morgan and less of Rudolph. I want to see the shiny new toy. (ie. Irv Smith) I have been a Rudolph supporter in the past, but if he doesn't want to re-negotiate his contract here when he may not even be the starter anymore, then I say trade him for fair value or cut him.

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/11/2019 3:54:15 PM)

The best thing going for Rudolph is that many fans perceive him as having high value. Let's hope there are some NFL coaches/trade partners that feel the same.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/11/2019 5:50:34 PM)

I figured Rudolph would be a problem in negotiations.

He has always had an extremely high opinion of himself despite average numbers.

Just a couple years ago he was declaring himself as the best TE in the league.

He's been a top ten TE in the league most of his career and still is. So yep you're right.

thebigo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/11/2019 10:14:16 PM)

There are many vikings fans it seems that don't consider is single player on our team to be worth a plug nickel

Well maybe the team will extend him with a big contract then.

We can't afford to do that, but we can afford him for this season. I think we could possibly work out his contract for three years $15 million and get some cap relief for this year and a reasonable contract for two more. That would probably be the best case scenario. Keeping Barr I think is the thing that will kill us, but this year I think he is only $5 million against the cap despite an annual average salary of $13 million.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/12/2019 12:09:46 AM)

This writer wants to keep Rudolph and he explains why. He also suggests how to make the cap work for this year- of course at the expense of next year.

i'm at a point where i feel very strongly that we should extend waynes with a five-year deal - including this season...we could bring his cap hit down to about $6m/yr for a couple of seasons and then pay him $13m/yr for the remainder of the contract...trade rhodes in a year or two....

we have to keep rudolph in 2019, but i'd let him go after that...he might not be old, but he's always slow and he gets noticeably slower every season....

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/12/2019 6:49:00 AM)

Some more trade options with Rudolph. The writer makes some good points.

Rudolph 2018

7th in rec
10th in yards
37th in yds/rec

And only 4 TDS. And many teams throw to two TEs. Our guy gets about 95% of the TE targets.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/12/2019 8:37:06 AM)

I'd like to keep Rudy for at least this year.

While unspectacular he has been a dependable player with good hands.

Rookie TE's struggle and Conklin isn't ready either.

I like the 9 receptions on 9 targets for 122 yards and two TDs in the next to last game of the season. I will consider the more recent history between him and Cousins more indicative of their future chemistry.

Because Rudy is slow as molasses, his ypc, yac, and yards per season are below average.

However, he is mostly top 10 in the other stats over the last 3-4 years. Bottomline, he is limited but very productive.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/12/2019 12:09:51 PM)

Last year was a down year for Rudolph and it has been openly discussed by him that his role was different in 2018. Is he starting a downward trend? Maybe but how much speed can you lose when you dont have any.

It seems like the writing is on the wall but like Jando, I’d like to get one more year out of him.

many don't realize this, but conklin ran a slower 40 time at the combine than rudolph - yes, i realize that rudy is even slower now, but imo conklin is a practice squad player...i would have liked spielman to draft another te this year - there were several late round players that had very good speed that could have been our 4th/development te...you can't teach speed, and speed is what you need today....

Yes you are right ... in 2016 was well above average.

2018 was above average; 2017 was slightly above average; 2015 was just below average. (if you approx. rank by 32 #1 TEs)

2018 #10 YDS / #73 YPC
2017 #14 YDS / #75 YPC
2016 # 4 / #57 YPC
2015 #19 / #50

YPC were way below average.

IMO he is way overrated by himself and underrated in here. In spite of his limitations, he produces.

This is news to me. I think I've seen him blocking on a lot of plays. If you mean he doesn't block well I would say I think he blocks as well or better than most teams primary receiving TEs.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/12/2019 3:12:26 PM)

Absconded from another site

Out of 81 eligible TE’s, Rudolph ranks 59th and 60th in run and pass blocking grades according to PFF

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (5/12/2019 3:59:28 PM)

If a slow TE with zero open field skill can produce in this offense then why the heck aren’t we asking what a faster, more agile TE could do? Alex smith produced just fine in KC too.
