We need to stop spending so much on D. It's no secret that our OLine was one of the worst in the league and we were 29th in spending. Lets even this out a bit. Good for Weatherly but he and Harris are a dime a dozen in this league.

Jeff I actually agree with you more or less. Not a dime a dozen, but not difference makers that should be getting big bucks. IMO the Vikings go overboard on keeping their own. Barr at $13 million??? Wilson can give us almost the same.

And we now have 3 highly drafted OL "of our own".

When TE Irv Smith Jr. was drafted by the #Vikings in April, his father Irv Sr., immediately reached out to Kyle Rudolph and asked him to look after his son. Smith Sr. had gotten to know Rudolph since he had been a Notre Dame TE before Rudolph played there.

Chris Tomasson on Twitter

Friend or not, this seems like it would put Rudolph in a really awkward position.

When things get awkward that's the time to be classy. Then the awkwardness can go away. I mean, it was already awkward that the Vikings drafted Smith, but it would have been even worse if they used a first rounder on Noah Fant, or traded down in the first round to select Irv Smith, Jr.

"Hey could help my boy out, don't let the fact that the better he plays the more replaceable you are affect your thinking."

I personally don't feel it is awkward at all. There is room on the Vikings for Multiple Talented TEs and even if Smith eventually becomes better than Rudy we still have a place for him on the team. As far as looking out for him that could easily be about helping him stay on the straight and narrow. Helping him find a good place to live and how to avoid the pitfalls of being young and wealthy.

A first a second and a third. Last year was almost comical the outrage of the fan base over not drafting OL help. What do you call a 2nd round draft choice? However, the outrage was justified. We needed more help. We could have easily used first and second round picks on OL.

i promoted weatherly at $3m/yr...imo that is a very team friendly deal for a player that appears to be developing into a solid de...and harris for the same money would be team friendly....

weatherly is a 6'-5", 4.65/40 athlete that the vikings coached from a 7th round pick, into a real player - for the money, he would not easily be replaced....

In a perfect "non-salary cap strapped" world.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/10/2019 2:25:12 PM)

If Rudolph plays well he doesn't have to worry about Smith, whether the rookie plays well or not.

I was unsure about that. I thought you were promoting him at 4 years 12 million each. $3 million would be a freaking bargain. As for Weatherly's size/speed ratio he is a verifiable freak.

Sure if he plays to a Gronk level, odds are he is not going to produce any better than he ever has, pretty sure we brought Smith in to raise that bar. Maybe not this year. At what point is RAY (Rudy Added Value) greater than or less than his salary cap hit?

he had three sacks in six starts last year and played the run well...not spectacular, but in another year he'll probably command double what i've mentioned...that's why i think we need to extend him now....

as it stands today we're $22m over the 2020 salary cap....

Doesn't look like how a game is going to be officiated is even close to decided yet:

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/10/2019 6:01:01 PM)

I've been starting to dive deeper into the #Vikings roster. For me, three-tech DT, WR and iOL are a few position groups I'm excited to watch. The DL is an interesting battle. How much will young guys like Jalyn Holmes, Hercules Mata'afa, Armon Watts and Jaleel Johnson grow?

(Daniel House on Twitter)

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/10/2019 6:17:11 PM)

I exchanged tweets with Daniel House. He sees Mata'afa as a situational pass rusher. I believe the Vikings will experiment with him early on, but my hunch is that he will be all over the line on passing downs. (kind of like John Randle was at one point in his career)

This was his response:

Any time you have a player with that type of versatility, you can slide him to different techniques. Zimmer has talked about his quickness, which is a trait that allows him to rush from different spots. Now, let's see if he has the strength.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/10/2019 8:37:31 PM)

I'm all for balancing the cap and not overspending on D. Locking up talented young players before FA is a great way to do it. Griffin is a great example.

If we can get Harris and Weatherly at friendly team deals, now is the time to do it. We're paying Hunter a fraction of what he'd be making on the open market.

I agree with the point. You do have to pick your spots, gotta be willing to move on from guys like Joseph and Harrison. Locking up Harris and Weatherly frees us up in the draft to be picking the latters replacement instead of the formers - IMO

Kyle Rudolph To Sign an Extension on Tuesday

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 12:49:33 AM)

The Vikings are good at managing contracts and keeping players. I'm not hearing about the guaranteed money, but if Rudolph is signed with a lot of upfront or guaranteed money than the plan is to have a lot of 2 tight end formations and perhaps less of three receiver formations, especially on first and second downs and probably in the Red Zone, too.

Updated story on #Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph agreeing to a four-year, $36 million contract extension that will lower his 2019 salary-cap number. When he signs Tuesday, will be under contract through 2023.

rudolph's text/tweet....

“Just under a decade ago, I received a phone call that could change my life. On that day. all I know is that I would be Playing in the NFL, realizing my childhood dream. What I didn't know was the role the state of Minnesota would play in my life. Marrying my wife and established out home...in Minnesota, experiencing the birth of my 3 beautiful children...in Minnesota. Starting a journey to better the lives of children dealing with a disease that doesn't discriminate...in Minnesota giving everything I can possibly give, professionally and personally to the greatest sports franchise and its fans...in Minnesota. And I am honored beyond words to say that my home, our home, will always be...in Minnesota!"

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 1:15:25 AM)

It takes 3,000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for a year’s supply of footballs. That means that 94 cows will give their lives for Viking football. The ultimate sacrifice! (Vikes fan on Twitter)

If it was baseball we would have all the information we need, but since it's an NFL contract we need more- maybe it will come in the morning.

$22m over the cap next year and it looks like we're back-loading rudolph's deal....

how we make the room:

reiff
griffen
joseph

that's $40m right there....

Good, this needed to happen. This offense will be really hard to defend with the two TE sets. Now get to camp and get to work, lots to work on! I'm liking what we have been seeing out of OTA's, but we need to get some pads on these boys to see what kind of team we really have!
