It doesn't bother me that we signed Rudolph. As a fairly firm supporter over the years it doesn't do anything to excite me either. Seems more about being nice and promoting culture and I think it was time to 'it's just a business' Kyle off the team this year. But it doesn't matter...I am 100% balls to the walls ready to ride the wave all the way through this year. One time saying it has to pay off. This doesn't feel rah rah to me...I think we have all the pieces.

Exactly where I'm at with it.
Is what it is. I don't see him putting us over the top, or killing us.
He'll be a good soldier, lets get it going.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 8:35:09 AM)

I think what this means is the Vikings want to run two tight ends a lot. And that's maybe a good thing. I can see Cousins being very effective with it. With a (hopefully) bolstered O line, they can utilize Cook in the run or they can play action out of it and still have some talented receivers (Smith, Rudolph, Cook) out there on mismatched defenders.

We need to stop spending so much on D. It's no secret that our OLine was one of the worst in the league and we were 29th in spending. Lets even this out a bit. Good for Weatherly but he and Harris are a dime a dozen in this league.

Jeff I actually agree with you more or less. Not a dime a dozen, but not difference makers that should be getting big bucks. IMO the Vikings go overboard on keeping their own. Barr at $13 million??? Wilson can give us almost the same.

i promoted weatherly at $3m/yr...imo that is a very team friendly deal for a player that appears to be developing into a solid de...and harris for the same money would be team friendly....

weatherly is a 6'-5", 4.65/40 athlete that the vikings coached from a 7th round pick, into a real player - for the money, he would not easily be replaced....

I was unsure about that. I thought you were promoting him at 4 years 12 million each. $3 million would be a freaking bargain.

he had three sacks in six starts last year and played the run well...not spectacular, but in another year he'll probably command double what i've mentioned...that's why i think we need to extend him now....

as it stands today we're $22m over the 2020 salary cap....

I think you are correct.

Kyle Rudolph To Sign an Extension on Tuesday

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/06/11/kyle-rudolph-says-hes-staying-in-minnesota/

For all those thinking that Rudolph was going to be cut and signed by the Patriots for 3 Million this must be mind blowing. It's average annual value of 9 million per year. I like Rudy even more than most people, but my mind is blown. Maybe none of it's guaranteed. I really don't get this.

After an offseason of uncertainty, it appears as though the Minnesota Vikings and tight end Kyle Rudolph have mended fences.
Rudolph passed along a message via his Twitter account Monday night indicating he’s staying in Minnesota.
“I am honored beyond words to say that my home, our home, will always be… in Minnesota! #UnfinishedBusiness,” Rudolph wrote.
According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com, Rudolph has agreed to a contract extension with the Vikings. He is expected to sign the deal Tuesday morning. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, it’s a four-year extension worth $36 million. With the money remaining on his current deal for 2019, Rudolph will make upwards of $43 million over the next five seasons if the contract runs to its duration.
Rudolph was the subject of trade talks this offseason as extension talks with the Vikings had seemingly stalled out. Rudolph made it clear he didn’t intend to take a pay cut either. However, extension talks were back in the works three weeks ago and appear to have finally gotten over the finish line.

I thought Rudy's next contract was going to be 3 years 18 million with 10 of it guaranteed. Oh well. If this deal has more than 10 million guaranteed beyond this year I am going to disappointed. We seem to go way overboard in keeping our own.

I'll reserve judgement until the details and especially the guaranteed money are revealed. At the moment it appears to be a true commitment to mediocrity, a classic case of 'try the same thing over and over and hope for different results'.

9 Million in guaranteed money. It's complicated. Read the links above.

So in reality we get two more years of Rudolph and then it's up to the team year-to-year to decide if they want to keep him or not with no chance of a compensatory pick like we likely would have received had he played out the remainder of his existing deal.

Personally I would have preferred a trade or cut due to his lack of speed and inability to break tackles. The Vikings organization has chosen to extend him and the only 'why' I can come up with is that Rudolph is a fan-favorite.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite Pat Kirwan quotes: "If you run your team like a fan, don't be surprised if sooner than later you end up being a fan."

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 10:02:42 AM)

.
.
we must be giving him a contract bonus and 2019 salary that equals $9m - and then another $7m in guarantees...i wonder what the 2020 details look like....

Ian Rapoport@RapSheet
On the 4-year, $36M extension the #Vikings & TE Kyle Rudolph agreed to last night that accomplished his ultimate goal of staying in Minnesota: Rudolph gets $1.625M additional this year added to his $7.625M base, per source. $9M fully guaranteed in all. $16.025 in total guarantees.

Tom Pelissero@TomPelissero
One more note on this deal from late last night: my understanding is it clears about $4 million in 2019 cap space for the #Vikings, who have been tight. So they keep the player and get some short-term flexibility too.

The reason we keep him is because he is good. if he wasn't we would have accepted a trade offer and there were trade offers. Those trying to act like Rudolph is more or less worthless and was going to be cut couldn't have been more wrong. There will be no 3 million dollar contract with the Patriots.

so this is a four-year extension that ends 2023 - four years beyond this season...i wonder if the $16m guaranteed includes this season...i think that we're going to be paying cap hit on this deal for the next three seasons....

if we're saving $4m in 2019 then that means rudy's cap hit is $3.6m in 2019...extrapolating forward with $16m in guarantees = $12.4m of unpaid cap hit...that most likely means that if we let rudy go after the 2020 season we're still going to eat some dead money....

It looked like his 2020 salary was guaranteed only for injury but I think that number is included in the $16m. Like I said earlier, unitl the details of the contract are revealed we don't really know for sure what the impacts are on the cap this year and down the road.

you very well could be right...i read somewhere $9m guaranteed with $16m in total guarantees...that $16m probably includes next season's injury guarantees...but still when one looks at his cap hit this season at $3.6m - it reads like there's still some money out there beyond next season....

Only $9 Million is guaranteed. The 16 million is only in case of injury. It does include this season which previously had no guarantee. If Rudolph does not play well this year we can cut him next year, but their will be a Dead Cap hit of the prorated signing bonus.

So $9m guaranteed minus $3.6m this years cap hit leaves $5.4m dead cap in 2020 — his salary is probably about $8.5m next year...so we probably keep him for two years....

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 1:39:22 PM)

I am looking forward to next offseason when the Vikings either give Cousins an extension to get some cap relief for next season, or Cousins shows he is a team player and takes a Brady-like cut for the team.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 1:43:54 PM)

If Cousins takes a paycut next offseason, and the Vikes go on to win the Super Bowl the 2020, the Vikes will probably be talked about as the model way to build a SB winner.

Get your franchise QB, build him an OL, give him strong 2 TE packages, retain your players, franchise QB takes a little paycut so you can retain your own, and maybe add any final pieces.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 1:50:13 PM)

Or Cousins is released after next season, slowing down the guaranteed massive contracts given out.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/11/2019 2:00:00 PM)

This is the off-season where the team is all in on supporting Cousins the best they can.

Rudolph has some strengths and weaknesses. The team knows what they have and will have to scheme with that in mind- taking advantage of his strengths and mitigating his weaknesses.

So I turned pretty sour against Rudolph when his contract negotiations snagged. I almost always take the teams side on these issues because I want them to win more than I care about the fortunes of specific players. I always figure they have a lot of money already. Now that the situation has been resolved, I will do what I always do- root for the Vikings. Rudolph is a Viking and I hope he has a Super year.

Mostly correct, but I think the signing bonus is spread over 5 years so if Rudy leaves after next season he will be a 1.2 million dead cap hit those years. I'm not certain.

You’re correct in that it gets spread over the life of the deal. If he gets cut it all hits at once though.

He would have no reason to do any of that. I would love it if he did...but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy that will even talk about restructure. The Vikings have NO leverage on that one. They can't cut him, the hit to the cap would be massive. They would only be able to trade him and where would that leave us?

I have a feeling they draft a guy next year to replace him and let him walk after the 2020 season freeing up a big chunk of cap space.

But we will see.
