I said to my wife a couple days ago, "This is the least amount effort I've put into following TC in 20 years."

What the hell is going on around here?

Can someone please summarize what's going on between the coaching staff and Sloter for me?

https://www.twincities.com/2019/08/21/following-critical-comments-by-mike-zimmer-vikings-qb-kyle-sloter-will-let-my-play-do-the-talking/

Sloter was asked his reaction to Vikings coach Mike Zimmer saying Tuesday that, despite gaudy preseason statistics, “there’s a lot of things that he has to get better at if he wants to be the backup quarterback.’’ Zimmer pointed to some Sloter mistakes in Sunday’s 25-19 win over Seattle and pretty much made it clear that, barring injury, Sean Mannion will be the backup behind Kirk Cousins when the season opens.

“He said what he said,’’ Sloter said. “I don’t really necessarily have a reaction. I’m just going to react by playing well Saturday (against Arizona at U.S. Bank Stadium). So I’m just going to let my play do the talking.’’

That said, Sloter still has some work to do to supplant Mannion for the backup spot, especially considering how Zimmer has talked about both players to this point.

Not that Sloter has any problem with that.

“I’m not here to argue with him,” Sloter said. “His word is the final word, so whatever he says, he’s the one I’ve got to win over to get whatever job I get in the future.”

Basically Zimmer said on Tuesday that he isn't getting the guys out of the huddle, lined up, motion, etc.

Sure doesn't look like it to me when I watch him play.

Last year I supported Siemian over Sloter. Siemian at least had a full year starting (plus more) with a 87 passer rating (w/o looking it up). Sloter first full year in the organization, had only played QB 1 year at a Division II school (I think).

Mannion has a total of 50 passes. And looked awful.

I'm not saying anoint Sloatgoat. But give him a chance to earn it (too late now tho)

Eff it. Just crown him the #2.

If for no other reason than Sloter could legitimately be our QB of the future in 1-2 years. There is a 0% chance Mannion can be.

I thought I'd put a few player opinions/observations here since it's been dead.

Offense:
I see Udoh in a lot of "53" projections as being a PS player. I hope to hell they aren't even considering that. I don't remember too many rookie OTs showing the flashes he does. He's steamrolled some guys like they are little kids and moves a lot better than I thought he was projected to move. I think he could be a starter eventually (probably sooner than later) and maybe a very good one. If he was a talented, "raw" 2nd or 3rd rounder, I'd be happy with what he's show so far, so I can't see taking any risks with him.

Samia should be a lock over the usual deadwood we keep on OL, no Willie Beavers II here.

Blasingame needs to be kept on the 53, I've also seen him being projected as PS material. I'd keep him over Ham if they can't keep both due to youth and upside. He has another gear that makes him a serious weapon compared to the usual FB.

Jordan Taylor: did he even fight for the pass down the left sideline from Sloter? What good is a tall guy who is passive? I hope one or more of the young WR steps up very soon.

Defense:
I'm so glad we got odinBIGO back, I was pissed last year when they let him get away. He will be a nice addition to the d-line rotation.

I'm hoping to see a big game from Hercules today. I'm hoping he provides some disruptive interior pass rushing and can be part of a Nascar package.

I hope we can sign Kearse to an extension. He has looked outstanding and apparently has responded well to coaching.

LBs: I want to see Barr rush the passer more and be part of the Nascar package. No other real strong opinions here other than why do we keep picking slow guys w/ limited cover skills? I'd rather have Kearse in the game than one of them.

Are they trying to sneak Kris Boyd to the PS? I don't remember hearing his name during the games. I was hoping he'd be a nice addition and backup at least.

Karter Schult looks more like a PS guy with pretty good upside. I thought he looked raw but seems to flash some pass-rush ability that is worth coaching up.

It's unanimous between you and I. Agree with everything posted. I might add Watts to this list. J Johnson was supposed to be the DT of the future, but Watts has the frame to add weight and is looking very good early on.

Very excited about some of the young oline talent.
Line of the future: O'Neil, ? , Bradbury, Samia, Udoh. I'm hoping Elf proves me wrong, we might have to draft a guard pretty high next year.

We will need to fill a couple holes:
DT - Watts?
CB (Be very interesting to see if Rhodes bounces back - if not, resigning Waynes might come into play)
3rd WR

IMO too much speculation based on some exhibition game snaps. Teams are playing fringe player against fringe player and not even game planning.

Then again, maybe they will cut Kendricks, Elf, and all the others who have looked shitty.

The offseason is nothing but speculation!! Starts pre-draft, and goes right up to final cuts.

We are debating back-up positions. Haven't read one poster suggest cutting Kendricks, Elf, or any projected starter (unless you count Ham a starter?).

Absolutely NO problems to criticisms of criticisms!

Or essays--or opinions--that's what I come to this place for. You folks know the Vikings and have waited your whole lives for 'That Sunday' which never seems to arrive!

Just like us!

But if a reader or fan doesn't want to get involved in a blog/site that talks turkey about the Vikings' performance on the football field, I'd suggest staying away from the V61.

Cheers!

True, it is a bunch of wild ass speculative innuendo.

mikegreitzer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2019 4:48:48 PM)

AND the reason that about 80% of people hit the team sites.

When I wrote for the Viking Age, I got well over 50,000 page views on two stories. One called "The Game That Ended Anthony Barr's Career As A Viking" (wild ass speculation with some performance notes) and "The Illusion Of Aaron Rodgers."

The Rodgers piece was very popular among Vikings' fans. Go figure.

Anyway---good to know you people!

This is pretty close to what I think. Of course the Vikings will surprise us in the next five or six days. Cut down day is approaching.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2019 5:30:20 PM)

I was wondering if the Vikings should pick him up, but I think no.

https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/2114775001

It does make the point that there will be some temptations as teams announce their roster cuts.

Very close to where I am too. I think Mannion and Sloter both stay.

Jerry Glanville made a mistake many years ago and Wolf and Holmgren capitalized.

It wouldn't be on that level but it would be a mistake.

Apparently Favre wasn't the greatest practicer either...

bohumm -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2019 6:34:10 PM)

Although we're unlikely to ever have reliable insight, I'd like to know the exact nature of his practice problems, since all are not created equal. If he just lacks a little urgency or focus, meh. If he can't handle different looks, disguised coverages, blitzes coming from varied points, calling out protection schemes, lining the offense up----all things might be integral to succeeding in real games that he aren't necessarily in the preseason----that is concerning. I think, right or wrong, we keep both. I don't hate Mannion as much as many do, though.

Joe McConnell (the radio voice on the video) and Ray Scott were my two favorite Vikings announcers over the years.

McConnell kind of lost it when Mike Lynn didn't re-sign him as play-by-play man. He subsequently bad-mouthed Lynn on the air (WCCO radio) maybe during his last game, going on and on about how much better Jim Finks was as a GM.

I believe it was McConnell and Grady Alderman that called the Vikings last Super Bowl.
