Looks like Dennison has been offensive coordinator for a few stints (Fired by the bills the previous season) and was the o-line coach for the Jets this last season.

Good experience, but I'm not sure his last couple stops were very successful.

Vikings hiring former Broncos’ HC Gary Kubiak in an offensive advisory role, per a league source. Kubiak’s son, Klint, is expected to become Vikings’ QB coach and Kevin Stefanski will remain as Vikings’ OC.

I was wondering why he would come here. I think I know, now- because he could bring his son and some of his posse with him.

And why not bring some of them, it's not like we had the Mt. Rushmore of asst. coaches.

His name was linked to a couple of other teams and he'd probably insist they come with him as well. I think he likes the idea of relative chilling for a year.

Burns -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 6:17:34 PM)

I'm ok with the double Kubiak hiring. It could be good.

But as others have said, it could also spiral into an awkward room with the nepotism issue. I don't think it will, but it needs to be thought of as a potential issue and handled swiftly if the issues arises.

Zimmer already has his son on the staff so I can't imagine him being too worried about it.

I'm hoping the extra set of eyes from Kubiak can get this thing going.

I think from Zimmer's track record with former head coaches, he is probably on board with the Kubiak hiring.

If we are after an OL coach for example, I don't care too much about his track record as OC or HC or whatever Peter Principle position he was elevated to.

Guess it's difficult to figure out unless the rest of the offenses players - and even the entire teams - are analyzed 38 different ways. He's been around the block, that's for sure. Whether that is good or not remains to be seen.

I like bringing some gravitas to the offense. I don't know if he was so successful at Houston with the offense, though. I think he had trouble getting a good qb, but he might like the prospects with having Cousins here.

Like I was saying with Burnsie, I don't put much stock into - in this example - Kubiak's stint in Houston HEAD COACH that started 13 years ago.

There are plenty of good asst. coaches or coordinators who get promoted and bomb. Most of them don't know any better, guess they let their ego decide.

Oh, FWIW: Kubiak oversaw four top-10 scoring offenses in eight seasons as the Texans head coach.

Maybe you were talking about someone else.

Exactly

There's an abundance of (not referring to specifically in here, either) if he coached X last year and X wasn't very good he must not be very good

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 6:33:25 PM)

With Priefer gone they can hire 100 of them and pay them a gazillion dollars and compartmentalize it all the way down. Don't even care. It's SB or bust and if it's bust they are going to shake it up hard.

Gary Kubiak meshes with Mike Zimmer's desire for the #Vikings offense -- a history of persistence and production in running the ball.

Fine, run the ball. But gain more than 1 yard on 1st down, please while doing so ...

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 6:44:53 PM)

And be god damn sure that third and short won’t turn into 4 th and inches were Zimmer calls a time out the split second before the sneak gets the first down.....[X(][X(]

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 6:53:02 PM)

Most of this years playoff teams were league leaders in fewest first downs by rushing.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 7:01:11 PM)

That Dennison guy has been at it 24 years. A Jets bio on him says "his" offenses have averaged 129 ypg.

Guess that was simply every offense he was involved with. And 129 isn't so much with it stretching back a generation when the league ran more.

If this guy does get hired, he does seem to be a run type of guy. Maybe we can resign Randall McDaniel and play some 90s music.

Right now we are the epitome of square peg - round hole.

Right on! And I would add that you can't run the ball constantly regardless of play calling strategy if you don't have the right guys in the trenches. Part of me wonders how Defallipo would have faired if our line was adequate. Either way someone had to fall on the sword.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 7:09:25 PM)

Kubiak played in three Super Bowls with the Broncos and won three as an assistant coach with the team in addition to Super Bowl 50, when he was head coach.

3 as asst. plus one as HC is 4. They only won three.

Actually, nobody fell on the sword in that parlance.

More like someone had to be the fall guy.

Burns -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 7:12:50 PM)

As far as I'm concerned, Remmers and Compton should be manning the sunglass hut after Thielen blew it up and is prime time now.

Reiff is teetering as well.

I will give Elf the benefit of the doubt right now.

This reads a lot like how the Eagles had our defense figured out last year in the NFCCG. I get so envious of teams that pull this type of preparation and execution off.

https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2019/1/13/18179269/rams-run-game-cowboys-tipping-plays-cj-anderson-todd-gurley

How did L.A. put together such a dominant performance against a run defense that ranked fourth best in rush yards allowed per attempt (3.8) and fifth best in run defense DVOA this season? Anderson and Gurley deserve credit for the romp, but so too does L.A.’s underappreciated offensive line, which submitted one of the best blocking performances by any team this year. The Rams’ run-blocking has been great all year, and in this game they had a secret weapon: They knew what the Cowboys’ defense was going to do before the ball was snapped.

Depending on the alignment of the Cowboys defensive tackles, particularly whether Maliek Collins was shaded closer to the tackle instead of the guard, the Rams figured a stunt may be coming. If the Rams saw Collins lined up slightly wider than usual, they looked for a second tell. If a certain Cowboys lineman had a specific hand on the ground—right or left—or if a player was tilted one way or the other, it confirmed what the Cowboys defensive line was going to do.

“They have good players, but we just felt scheme-wise we were able to—we had a lot of tips and tells on what they were going to do in front of us,” said Rams center John Sullivan.

My god am I jealous. Do we even scout teams? I feel like we are always adjusting at the half. The day anyone on our team, offense or defense, says yeah we dominated them because we knew what was coming, is the day I put my retirement fund at risk at Blackhawk (closest casino to Denver). Well at least a little of it, ($200 hahaha).

On that fake punt. Screw the fair catch. Bring that guy up. Let it bounce. Almost as good of a chance that you get a favorable bounce as a bad bounce. Outnumber them at the line of scrimmage and dare them to fake it. Only have 1 guy on each gunner, once it is a fake, you can hold.

I was like everyone else. I wasn't watching the game, I was studying and following on it on gamecast at NFL.com (which when they changed, became an atrocity). I saw 4th and 1, and said FAKE PUNT. Was not surprised when they ran it at all.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 8:03:34 PM)

Looked at the Mile High Report link. 3000 fans voted. Laughable article. I didn't click the article to see if the writer wrote with bias, influencing the results. I have no idea about Dennison, but I will ask my die hard fan friends. The oline was a joke for years. Elway took the Spielman approach after the Manning years (without looking up draft results).

Everyone I know here was excited that Kubiak was going to be more involved. It was a forgone conclusion with them hiring ANOTHER defensive coach when the offense needs more work. It is "said" that Kubiak was more involved with the draft last year, and it was easily their best since Elway took over. Though they might regret taking Chubb over a QB.

It makes a ton of sense for him to come here and work with Cousins. Especially if the Mike Shanahan rumor is true.

I HOPE for a Reid/young assistant (nagy bienamen sp?) type situation with Kubiak and Stef.

I am stoked for the move and it gives me a lot more hope. Something, with the slim pickings for oline, I desperately need.

A kudos to the FO and ownership for making this happen.

Burns -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 8:16:33 PM)

Another link to the Vikings as a potential TE coach following along with Kubiak:

Brian Pariani, coached in the NFL for 27 years, collecting four Super Bowl rings, three with the 49ers and one with the Denver Broncos. He spent the majority of his NFL time working with tight ends.

- pretty good pedigree

https://www.profootballhofacademy.com/2018/08/30/meet-pro-football-hall-of-fame-academy-coach-brian-pariani/

Not sure how this draft falls, but would not be upset if we got Noah Fant at 18 if a reach for an OL or a good trade back is not available. He is a match up nightmare for opposing defenses (unless you only want to run the ball- then not so much as he is not known for blocking).

Moreover, a field stretching tight end with + athleticism is nothing without some pass blocking and good QB play.........

[>:] so much to think about this offseason.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 9:22:54 PM)

Maybe Kubiak and crew are able to see Oline talent better than what they have had on staff?

kwheats -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/14/2019 10:37:23 PM)

All right Mr. Zimmer is this the plan you were talking about? Great mix of offensive coaches that will develope an offense that will move the ball, controll the clock to give your defense the points it needs to win. Can Spielman get you the offensive linemen needed to pull this plan off? You better hope so, last chance!!! Good Luck !!![sm=Smoker.gif]

Maybe there's not much talent on the oline.

That said, like it or not, Kubiak comes in with a system, a plan, and key staff, so maybe their zone scheme can work with some of the pieces we have on the OL.

From the Pio Press:

"Klint Kubiak was a member of the Vikings’ coaching staff in 2013-14, when he worked with Stefanski. He was offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach the past three seasons in Denver. Pariani has coached tight ends the past 20 years, 13 with the senior Kubiak in the NFL."

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/15/2019 12:55:51 AM)

I'm guessing Zimmer was all in on Kubiak – nobody needs a successful offense more than him (except maybe us [:)])

... but I am also guessing that Spielman is thrilled to have offensive clout on the staff to balance Zimmer's voice and avoid another Flippo coup.
