It's too bad Peterson isn't going to be out there as healthy as he can be, imo! Missed opportunity for everyone.

I just want wins. I wish all the Washington starters were scratched for tonight.

I want our players to stay healthy, too.

Thielen officially shut down Thursday night
Good decision

Washington is missing a number of players, or some may play hurt. Advantage Vikings even if Thielen is out. I believe he is the only player out for our team.

This is a must win, but it's really hard to imagine losing this one. I know it's a prime time game, but do you really think the Redskins are going to give their all for this one? I don't think so.

Here is a good article Here is one paragraph:

Finally, it's time to give the Vikings' offensive line the respect they deserve. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has the most time to throw of any quarterback in the league (average of 3.05 seconds), according to NFL Next-Gen Stats. The play of Minnesota's offensive tackles has been a big key. Riley Reiff and Brian O'Neill have been performing well in pass protection. The Vikings have the seventh-lowest adjusted sack rate in the NFL at 4.8 percent, per Football Outsiders.

http://www.mnvikingscorner.com/2019/10/upon-further-review-kevin-stefanski-is.html

I haven't read the article, but just a response based on my observations.

The successful use of play action and bootlegs are really ballooning the average more than having a pristine pocket for long periods. Kirk had to dodge a few free runners last week but did so fairly nimbly.

That said, the line has certainly improved and deserves credit for it. Still some work to do though.

That's my view on this as well. Play Action dramatically increases the time to throw, and Cousins on some of the throws has to wait for receivers to clear and be open. It's a great scheme to get Cousins on the move, he's good at it, and it really helps the line. We do have to be ready for the GB and CHI teams where the DE is not crashing and is 100% focused on Cousins.

Having said that, since the Chicago game, the online has taken a dramatic step forward.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 1:05:50 PM)

Cousins seems to throw well after running.

beo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 1:41:38 PM)

You have to think some team is eventually going to figure out how to counteract Vikes play action.
(GB in particular didn't seem to honor the fakes very much)

So it will be fascinating to see if Cousins has a confidence/comfort level that is still able to perform at this high level.

If he can, this offense can play with anyone.

I believe that a defense that devotes itself more to play action will be less effective in stopping our run game. I also think that defenses place extra priority to stopping the run game because the running game will tend to wear them down as the game progresses. A popular formula is to "make offenses one dimensional". That usually means to stop the run.

It's much easier to commit to ignoring play action when you jump out to a 21-0 lead

I think we will have a better 'plan b' when we play them next

We will see

That's a very good point... the ends were probably instructed to spy Cousins and contain rather than worry about Cook on the backside.

And also if the running game is not working.

We had 200 yards rushing against GB. Down 21-0 after first quarter, on the road. We were literally a Touchdown booth review and 1 bad throw into the endzone from realistically winning the game.

You can sell out to beat the run or the play-action. Not both.

I also expect Kubiak & Stef to have additional answers when DE's are crashing. The Lions had a nice play they ran several times of motioning the TE across and blocking the DE. When our DE got past and attacked the QB, the QB used them as an outlet.

An ugly win on Thursday night is ok. I hope they can see Rhodes needs to be benched and probably Elf too. That garbage will kill us against the Chiefs.

Pretty spot on. He doesn't go into some of our obvious shortcomings, but pretty spot on about how I felt.

Knute -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 10:49:17 PM)

Believe it or not, despite this game being less than spectacular, I thought tonight was a real turning the corner moment for this team.

This was the kind of game the Vikings used to lose routinely on prime time after building up expectations in the fans and the media

They hung in there on this short week without playing their best and put it away when it mattered most like really good teams do.

I'm really proud of them tonight.
This is a special Vikings team.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 10:55:43 PM)

Diggs after the game being told he just set franchise record (most receiving yards in 3 game stretch): I don't really care about the record, I'm leaving plays out there and I need to fix it.

Yep.

I felt this way after the GB game. Fighting back the way they did. Bears game threw me for a loop, but yeah this team can make noise.

https://www.espn.com/blog/minnesota-vikings/post/_/id/29084/sizzling-vikings-rip-off-fourth-straight-win-behind-efficient-kirk-cousins

The biggest takeaway with Cousins is the change we're seeing these past four games in his willingness to take aggressive shots downfield -- especially when his playmakers are covered. According to Next Gen, the 39-yard pass Cousins threw to Diggs in the third quarter on third-and-9 from the Vikings' own 10-yard line had a 24 percent completion probability, which was the second-most improbable catch of the season for Diggs. A year ago, Cousins probably doesn't make that throw. His confidence during this stretch shows he's willing and able to make these tough plays and spark life into this offense when it needs it most.

My favorite Cousins throw was about a 6 yard completion for a first down on third down to Diggs on the right. DB (#30) was playing zone underneath and Cousin with just deadly accuracy.

We've seen Cousins make throws like this over and over. I hope he starts getting some of the monkey off his back from the media and fans, I really really enjoy watching him play.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 11:04:47 PM)

According to NFL's Next Gen Stats, Dalvin Cook covered 68.6 yards on his 31-yard reception, the most distance covered on a reception in his career, and the third-most by any running back on a reception this season.

On the screen play to set up first and goal from the 5.

Warren Sharp@SharpFootball
No team has scored less than 20 points when winning a game without a single punt since 2000... until the Vikings tonight (won 19-9).

In fact, the last 10 years such punt-free victors score 40 ppg on average.

That's what happens when you insist on establishing the run.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 11:15:11 PM)

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/27911656/you-you-real-kirk-cousins

Good article. I wish Courtney would have dove into some of the losses a little more. The playoff game he went 29 for 46, 329, 1 TD and O INT (I don't think any turnovers).

It's also why I think he can be successful here because of Cook. If you're not on, take are of the ball, throw it away when its not there and let the defense and run game keep you in the game.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/24/2019 11:47:22 PM)

Zimmer on Rhodes:

Whistled when asked about the PI, said he woulda challenged it if he hought the league would over turn (said he got a telegram that said league hadn't overturned any). Said Rhodes game is a power forward and he has to play as a powerford (can't play like mac or waynes) and if he picks up some penalities along the way then so be it. Also said the short stuff is not on the CBs and if they're gettng beat on that, he needs to change coverage.

While I agree, I'm worried about this assessment. Hopefully after looking at tape he can revisit.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 4:19:05 AM)

Some credit is due to the Redskins. They came to play. They didn't look like a one win team. We didn't look Super, either, but it seems that we were missing our best receiver. It turns out that that was the right call. That explains a little why we kept running the ball.

The whole game felt a little tense. The Redskins were more loose, but our team was a bit tight. It's good that we have more experiences in prime time so that we can play better in the playoffs.
