Some random thoughts on the game:

Kirk played extremely well IMO even though Elf had an absolutely horrendous night! I was hoping Elf had turned the corner after the Lions game.

Dalvin and Mattison are amazing! Like Steve says best 1, 2 punch in the league.

I didn't hate going for it on 4th down. I didn't like the execution obviously but I won't second guess taking a chance there.

Rhodes needs to take a seat. I think everyone can see that he's playing at a fraction of what he was 2 years ago.

Bradbury is a monster on screen plays. I feel like he's going to be a great one after he puts on a little more strength.

Diggs needs to quit making silly mistakes. He played very well with the exception of the fumble. I like that he called himself out on that.

I hope we can run the TE screen with Irv one of these days.

All in all a good win. I expected it to be ugly on the short week. let's see what we have against KC.

SteveR -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 6:30:24 AM)

I didn't really get to see any of this game either. I was pretty sure it was a done-deal kind of game, so I never checked into it much at all. I saw bits and pieces here and there, mostly Rhodes getting toasted. On the plus side, he didn't seem to get injured after every completion against him. Rhodes is not the type of situation that makes me appreciate the Patriots way of knowing when to cut bait. Like would they have paid him, or would they have let him go or tried to trade him for additional resources?

I also saw Zimmer go for it on fourth down. I liked that. It seems like the offense has gotten a bit more aggressive and loosed up somewhat.

Hopefully, I can see the next two games. They look a lot more interesting. We get a break with Mahomes being out. Plus, then we'll play a stronger team in the Cowboys in prime-time.

They're talking about Mahomes playing this week. So I don't think it's a given he will be out against us.

I don't know what Stefanski is thinking setting up screens for Rudolph. While Rudy is a sure handed receiver but running after the catch is not his strong suit and painful to watch as well. For a big guy he has no power whatsoever either.

Him not getting that first down on the crosser was pretty sad!

I also have the same opinion regarding sending him on deep routes. When they tried it against Detroit he looked totally out of his element, Kliensasser (even now) couldn't have stumbled around more. The only things Irv Smith might not be as good at yet are high throws (good back of end zone plays) and perhaps consistency (Smith doesn't have enough playing time and attempts yet to prove he has more reliable hands yet). It seems to me like a no-brainer that Irv should be the primary TE unless he starts dropping a bunch of passes, but I doubt he will because he looks so fluid and natural catching the ball.

Misdirection? LOL

3-0 against NFC East

Re: Rhodes, I'm afraid Zimmer is making the same mistake he did when he kept playing Greenway despite his performing like he was just a husk of his former ability. I'd rather see Alexander out there and if we could rely on Holton Hill...he'd be better right away or at least after he knocks the rust off.

MarkWren -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 7:26:21 AM)

A few thoughts:

Relieved to get past this game. Intangibles were weird--AD and Case back here with chips on their shoulders, Kirk vs. former team, etc.

Rhodes appears to be done. Or at least has been playing hurt. Had Case not gone down, I believe Rhodes' vulnerability in pass coverage would have cost us this game. It may not even have been close.

Elf is a major weakness, can't understand why he struggles so much as a guard when he was solid as a C.

Bailey and Colquitt are locked in now. Excellent! I worry that Hughes as PR will cost us a ballgame; why don't we value Marcus Sherels more, as an organization? Best PR we ever had, IMO. Always peace of mind with him back there. Not anymore.

Diggs is a (talented) flake. He came very close to ripping of that helmet again after making a play last night. The guy is immature, needs a Nelson Cruz-type presence to guide him.

Expecting GB to get KC minus Mahomes. Expecting us to get a healthy Mahomes. It'll take a great effort to win at KC, but we can do it if we shore up a couple of areas (above).

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 7:41:06 AM)

I was wondering why one of the Redskin punts was not caught. That was not good.

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 8:04:29 AM)

My $0.02 (Friday edition LOL):

Thursday night games are weird, and this one was no exception. I never know what to expect.

I think the team was a little soft, and WAS came to play - especially their front 7 on defense.

I didn't like the 4th and 1 call. Dumb time and place for it, IMHO. It's just another way to give an inferior team a way to keep hanging around, which they did for a while. Punt the ball and play defense.

Kendricks was beast out there again. NICE PBU on one play in particular.

Elf struggled, as did Rhodes. Mac and Waynes with some nice play out there.

Bailey made all of his kicks.

Our pass rush was pretty tame again. I just felt like overall our defense was playing at like 80% of its capability. I think a lot of that has to do with it being Thursday and guys not going all out because they are expecting to win regardless.

The crosser where 82 didn't get the first down pissed me off. It was there, he just didn't fight for it enough. Bisi running a route 1 yard too shallow, too.

Kirk played very well.

Cook and Mattison were studs.

Seemed like we had 15 running plays to finish the game and eat the whole clock. I have no problem with that.

I think Diggs finally gets it on ball protection after another dumb fumble. Dude. Seriously.

Final thought: this had trap game written all over it for me. I knew WAS would play hard, and wondered if we would give 100% in all phases. Thursday games are odd, too. WAS players have pride, too, and a 16.5 point spread is insulting. I totally would have taken WAS and the points. But the thing is, the guys hung in there, and were grinders and got the win. They owned the 2nd half and got a 10 point win to go to 6-2 before their mini-bye. I'll take it.

One would think these coaches that are on the practice field with them everyday would know what each niche a player has.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 8:13:50 AM)

and what is with our screen game, huh? my goodness is it night and day better than what we're used to for the last how many years ....

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 8:14:24 AM)

I think had Case not been concussed there may have been a different outcome last night. Case was targeting Rhodes and moving them down field and AD was running with purpose.

That lame ass qb sneak on 4th n one in our own territory could have been more costly had Case been in there.

Too me this screamed of Zim losing patience. Thinking we should be dominating them or something. It was an unecessary risk.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 8:30:04 AM)

In the second half last night, the Redskins ran just 15 plays and had the ball for just 8:01. On their final drive of the game, the Vikings ran 14 plays and took 8:16 off the clock.

It was a dumb decision to go for it. and a dumb play call once they decided to go for it.

It was a dumb decisoin because we were winning against a moribund team forced to use a raw rookie QB, pin them deep and let the defense do it's job.

Once they made that dumb decision, they made a really dumb decision to do a QB sneak. Dalvin Cook had a far better chance of making that yard than Cousins did in any circumstance.

i don't know what Zim was thinking there.

The vikes loooked flat, uninterested and the secondary was allowing big catch after big catch. This game was very much in jeopardy until Case left with the concussion.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 8:37:41 AM)

Oh, and if I see one more TE screen to Rudolph I think I might take a little trip to Eagan and bitchslap some coaches.

If you were the OC of this team would you be up late at night designing plays that got Rudolph the ball behind the LOS?

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/25/2019 8:52:01 AM)

Just for the sake of keeping the defense guessing - you’d think they would throw a few screens to Smith or Conklin (or even Ham) ... the shock and awe of your secret Rudolph screen, or ‘giant lumbering oafish screen’ (as its called in the huddle), is out of the bag. In fact, its now routine, which means finely tuned defenses will start erasing the 1-2 yards it has been getting us.

I suspect its part Rudolph sells it better and part keep him involved and part Smith is getting a lot of practice on other things.

It may not seem like rocket science but there is a lot of nuance to running effective screens ... its just a matter of time before we start seeing Smith involved.

Don't forget the go route to Rudolph off the play action

I dont specifically remember the go route. I was talking more about setting up screens to begin with. Varying off that is another thing.

I’m not as low on Rudolph as some ... he serves a purpose and is effective in a few situations. If he’s on the field, you use him anyway you can ... even if its running molasses go routes to pull a LB. He may not have gotten 3 yards into his route before the play is over, but he is still a big safe target or pressure outlet, if need be, for those 3 yards.

The Rudy screen gains 5-7 yards every time they run it. That’s why we keep seeing it. The coaches are content with it and I guess that’s all well and good. Weird that they don’t ever get curious about how much better it could be.
