Well, getting the whole band back together.

Ush -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 2:34:12 PM)

I like both moves. Treadwell can be up to speed from the beginning but I’m hoping he’s an emergency guy in the case Bisi doesn’t work out or there is an injury.

As for Sherels, this is a very solid move IMO. I don’t trust Bisi or Abdullah to return punts. Having a solid guy back there protects against turnovers and he can obviously take it to the house if he has the space.

Well, for all my complaints on keeping Ham over Blasingame... he is consistently taking out at least 1 defender in the reel above.
(check out then 2nd or 3rd last highlight... he just LEVELS a CB... ouch)

Credit where credit is due.

Why don't you trust Bisi? I don't remember him having issues on punt return during preseason. Maybe he had issues in practice, but we wouldn't know about that.

I like both guys, but I want WRs who can get open and catch, and I like CBs who can cover. I don't like spending a roster spot on a punt returner or guys who are great on special teams but can't really man their position.

Because he's never really done it.

2 PRs in the preseason for 11 yards.
26 PRs total in college for 170 yards and a 6.5 average. (12 for 48 yards as a SR)

Yes, the inexperience is what worries me. I think, for us to be successful the way we are structured, we need to be strong in all 3 phases of the game. Just like not having a rookie kicker [&o], I don’t think we should have a rookie at PR. I also think Sherels is better than a couple of the guys we have as a fill in DB (Meadors, Epps). He knows the defense and can hold his own if we need him in a pinch.

Fair enough. Good point about being good, not just adequate, at PR. Sherels is also great in ST coverage, so there is also upside there.

Ush -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 3:31:43 PM)

One guy I don’t want at PR that has been mentioned in the media previously is Mike Hughes. Not just because of his injury but because he isn’t good at it. He was a very good KR at UCF but struggled to catch punts. I’m a UCF season ticket holder and we used to dread when he would line up as a PR.

Anyone hear anything on Akiem Hicks? He left the game last night and never came back. If he is out next week that would be a huge break for the interior of our oline.

jbusse -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 3:34:14 PM)

Former Vikes:

Adrian Peterson is averaging 2.8 yards per attempt.
Nick Easton hasn't played a snap for the Saints, and was among the inactives during week 2.
Brandon Zylstra has been inactive all three games for the Panthers.

Was fortunate to be at the game yesterday. Dominating performance overall.
Cook is the REAL DEAL. So explosive, so shifty and real speed.
The Raiders went after Wilson and he more than handled himself. Got fooled once bad, but overall was very active and disruptive.
Fun to see Carlson miss and the Defense control Jacobs.
Smith looks to be a big addition.
Fun to dominate offensive genius Gruden.
Loved seeing the 1969 NFC Champions honored.
Got to meet "Hardware Hank" Henry Thomas.
On to the Bears.

The biggest thing with Cook is you don't have to hold your blocks (like they did with AP)....he gets to and thru the hole so fast.

But not as fast as Robert Smith or Moss

I am not so sure (if you are talking 10 yard dashes versus 40). Cook is really fast that first 5-10 yards. Smith needed blocking also and if I remember correctly he liked the I formation also.

It was tongue in cheek or as bigo likes to say, I was being swarmy. I posted a few weeks back that Cook reminded me "a bit" of Smith with how fast he hit and was through the hole.

It got turned into something it was not.

Cook though is lot more elusive.

Don't you mean "swarthy"?

I think Cook is definitely faster to and through the holes than Smith. Also I'm pretty sure we are no longer surprised to see end of the week "top speed attained" results attributed to one or more of Cooks runs, more than just the first 5 to 10 yards.

Loving Cook, but for speed to or through or to the house not in Robert Smith's class. With Smith if you blinked you would never find him again.

Another one of those "you said, it must be true moments". [&o]

Even when Cook Breaks one you still have to watch to the end to make sure he gets to the house. When Smith got half a step he was 10 yards gone by the next. Love Cook, but yep I say so and it's true. Smith way faster. No comparison.

Smith probably had more straightline speed than Cook, but Cook is a better RB. Smith couldn't take a hit and keep going like Cookie Montster can.

True. Cook just glances off the defender.

Hicks suffered a knee injury last night and Gabriel left game with a concussion.

Wash turned the ball over 5 times. We need to have a turnover free game in order to escape Chi town with a win.

I don't think we have to. I'm confident that with just one TO we win and give us at least even odds with 2 TOs.

Beebe may (or may not) have more potential as a receiver, but Treadwell is a better football player at this point. He's a core special teamer and a very good blocker (Beebe has had a few good blocks that I've noticed, though). The fact that Treadwell is the best we could do as a receiver is disappointing, though; it's hard to see him becoming reliable.

Beebe cannot be our PR going forward, though. I think we can all agree on that.

I knew that before he proved it. [:-]

thebigo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 3:48:18 PM)

I'm assuming Sherels is healthy and ready to go?

Hughes is so explosive that I would love to see him returning both KOs and Punts. However, you should know if his hands and decision making on punt returns are reliable and if you say no I take your word for it.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 4:09:32 PM)

So instead of signing Sherels, you want to have our #1 pick that is coming of a knee injury and also a great cover cb return punts? I don't know if I have this right or not? Also I didn't mention how much of a ball hawk for interceptions he is.....

I think you sign Sherels who can be a 5th or 6th emergency corner, cover punts, and return punts safely do it.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 4:21:10 PM)

Hughes returning kicks right now is a non starter. There is no way you expose him to that kind of risk right after he was finally cleared to play. Especially with the thin CB ranks.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 4:27:37 PM)

I actually think Treadwell is/was the 3rd or 4th best wr on the team when they cut him. Beebe was fools gold.

Perhaps reality set in for Treadwell when no other team wanted him after being cut. Hopefully he picks up his boot straps and makes the most of this second chance. Cuz their probably won't be a third.

I saw that New England put their FB on IR and I was crossing my fingers that they didn't pick up Blasingame. I haven't heard anything yet, which is probably good news.

He is kind of like an extra TE on the field with his blocking and receiving, for that matter. He's tall and thick. Anyway, if the Vikings are planning to be smash mouth physical on Sunday, it may not be a bad idea going to war with Treadwell. That is the new identity of the team, imo.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 4:34:30 PM)

If Sherels is in uniform and ready to play I would be shocked if he was not the return man. He is one of the best in the business and he's not very good at CB, so if you bring him back it is to do returns and also special teams. He was good at that, too.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 4:37:04 PM)

Found this under studs and duds regarding Saint/Seahawk game

The same is true of backup guard Nick Easton, who was signed with the intention of competing with top draft pick Erik McCoy at center. Instead, Easton is the team’s seventh or eighth option on game days, and he was inactive a week ago. He was phased out of the competition to start at center and has taken a backseat to Will Clapp as a backup guard. The good news is that the Saints can get out of his contract next season with no dead money left over

Too many people think anyone that is fast and quick can be a good returner. But there is a very different skillset involved than just being a smallish WR or DB.

I posted Bisi's numbers upthread.
Hughes returned 14 punts in 23 college games. He's returned 2 punts in 7 career Pro games.
Ameer Abdullah returned 31 punts in 61 college games - none in his final 2 seasons. And he's never returned one in 4+ seasons as a Pro.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/24/2019 4:46:49 PM)

Vikings get the A-team from CBS for Sunday’s game against the Bears. Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Tracy Wolfson on the call.

(Chad Graff on Twitter)

Big game on the national level.
