Kirk doesn’t help his OL when he holds onto the ball forever.

Seems to me other teams negate a pass rush with quick throws.

Cousins seems to miss deep throw TDs when he has time.

I am glad Speilman has time to F around drafting and trading for kickers every year.

3 TE sets way too often. Only one of them with any speed. Slow FB. And your 2 WR's running too deep of routes.

As mentioned by others, we need 3 WR's on the field way more often, and at least one of them needs to be running shallow, quick routes. Hit them in stride for a possible quick, big play, instead of this weakass dump off shit to Ham when he has his back to the defense.

Throwing the ball to Ham, or Rudolph for that matter, is Zimmer tough guy football.

Every team in the league has 4 WR's that can play when necessary. We can't find 3? Well, I doubt Zimmer even wants 3.

Even though it was garbage time, Johnson looked like he knew what he was doing out there.
Routes looked crisp. He goes to the ball, extends his arms and catches with his hands while looking it all the way in.

We don't need 4 WR sets....Smith, Bisi, Thielen, Diggs. Rudolph can get separation off of the line also. Bisi and Smith were open on short shots at the end.

Kyle Rudolph?

Yeah he can get open too...just no YAC.

I think he's left open on those plays because defenses know they can get to him and stop him before he gets the 1st down.

Rudy gets "open" by being bigger and taller than defenders...

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 5:20:29 PM)

The biggest problem with Spielman is keeping expensive guys a year too long.

It bit us with AP 18 Million his last season.
Rhodes this year (if he doesn't improve) 13 million cap hit?
Rudy does look really slow even if the cap hit is low this year?
Kalil?
Jared Allen?
Robison?
Greenway?

You have to make change/restructure before it gets to that point.

Other than in the red zone, Rudolph is like the "fat kid" in a sandlot football game. He's the least important person to cover because he's not a threat to do anything if he catches the ball.

Rob Viking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 5:47:06 PM)

I couldn't believe Rudy was resigned especially after drafting Smith Jr. He's well liked in the organization and the community and is seen as one of the leaders of the offense. Unfortunately a player's message can wear thin when he backs it up with a big play once every 4 weeks.

Rob Viking -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 5:52:31 PM)

I will add, Irv Smith looks like a wide receiver out there. Get this man the ball.

Still not getting as many snaps as he should:

Game 1: Rudy 100%, Smith 48%
Game 2: Rudy 100%, Smith 42%
Game 3: Rudy 87%, Smith 49%
Game 4: Rudy 84%, Smith 47%

Among a few of Spielman's biggest problems, along with inability to field a competitive offensive line and QB futility. I love his ability to find quality in the lower draft rounds and via UDFA, but if you are unable to field a decent QB and an O-line that is at least mediocre, you probably aren't going to have great success.

Interesting that a defensive guy like Zimmer has Cousins as his ride or die, which is how this likely plays out.

What I'd like to know is what level of analysis Spielman put into the decision to sign Cousins. Most of us are good enough armchair analysts to recognize that his passing stats as a Redskin looked pretty good compared to what Viking quarterbacks achieved in recent years (4,000+ yards, etc.). I was in favor of signing him, but analyzing KC's positives and negatives was not my full time job. Did the Viking scouts look closely at how he did under pressure, during periods when his O line wasn't at its best? It's difficult to believe that these shortcomings weren't evident during his Redskins years (a leopard can't change its spots) . My sense is that Spielman prides himself on doing his homework, so I wonder what went wrong.

It appears he really didn't do his homework or thought he could catch lightning in a bottle.

Keep in mind Spielmans job was/is not real secure and he needed to find an answer at QB.

After Snyder rebuffed Kirk and would not sign him long term there were definitely some red flags there.

Here's a GIF of 'the timeout'. It's still too difficult for me to count the Vikings on the field. But then I noticed something else - THE BEARS WEREN'T EVEN LINED UP AND SET! They weren't even a threat to snap the ball.

I'm betting Burflict isn't laughing now. He'll be out at least through the 2020 season, might as well be for the rest of his career at that point.

I wish.

But Zim did everything he could to hold down the kid. No reps with the #2s despite being our best (by far) QB in the preseason again.

Zimmer hates guys that have any "cowboy" in them, and I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason he's gone is Zim didn't want to deal with the inevitable QB controversy.

Instead we're stuck with no hope. Great job Zim and Co! I can't believe Spielman didnt have the sense to hold onto him.

Spielman is probably scared of Zim.

(Plus I'm not sure Spielman even knows what a good QB looks like...)

Ragnarök -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 7:46:55 PM)

Sloter could come back tomorrow if we sign him to the active roster and he agrees... He is on Arizona practice squad and would only require a contract worked out and some smoothing out of terms...

I myself would not care if he only won a handful of games to end the season honestly, it would be interesting seeing what he could do...

But alas, it will never happen with Zimmer and this regime, he has no ability to coexist with a Sloter type QB...

SO... its flame out time soon...

Then package some draft picks and players to Miami to take Kirk Cousins shitty contract off our hands and send Zimmer to the tar pits as some here have called for...

Sooner the better...

I would love to kick the tires on Sloter no matter... I know DeFilippo did some work with Sloter last year, Id love to hear his thoughts on what a player Kyle could be...

I dont think it was fear for Spiels, but a knowing that as shit hits the fan, if he distances himself from this mess in letting Zimmer make his final last calls and doing it all ZIMMERS WAY this year, maybe Spiels can cry it was all Zimms fault and have a great plan to move forward saving his ass...

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 8:08:50 PM)

For those that want to torture themselves here's the coaches tape on the game:

https://media.skillout.org/vikings/2019/38046A22.mp4

I'm posting comments as I re-watch the game with better views than network TV.

My gawd our defense looked confused during that first drive. Bears kept running the trips/bunch formation. It looked like we had never seen it before. Twice we had two guys covering the same player. Barr, spins himself around covering a TE that was obviously his, and the catch went for a first down.

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 8:21:02 PM)

First drive: Reiff looked terrible. First running play, he falls right in the path of Cook with just a little push.

On same drive, first play - pass play. Everyone is covered.
On 3rd down, trips left. We have two guys run button hooks at 10 yards pretty close to each other. The 3rd is running a fly route, with safety help over the top. Pretty bad route combination.

Cousins floats over the top to Cook who picks up the first down.

Not acceptable how our cap money is being used/ results...

Its on Zimmer and the OC tandem and company of buddies and family...

Kirk Cousins: 3 years, $84M

Stefon Diggs: 5 years, $81M

Adam Thielen: 4 years, $64M

Vikings: 31st in passing yards per game, 32nd in passing first downs per game

If Cousins is such an honorable boy scout, he should take a pay cut that reflects his actual performance. Restructure.

Ragnarök -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/30/2019 9:09:05 PM)

Hamming it up...

Thielen played 50 more snaps than Ham and ended up with two more targets, one less reception, and four fewer yards than his fullback. Seems less than ideal!

Cousins' NextGen passing chart. Only four of his 36 passes went ten yards past the line of scrimmage. According to PFF, he was under pressure on 17 of his 42 drop backs.

Acording to PFF
Bradbury 5
Reiff 4
O'Neill, Dozier, 3
Elflein, Cook 2

Cousins was also credited with allowing 2 for holding onto the ball too long.

An interesting note from @ArifHasanNFL's latest story: Five of the Bears' six sacks yesterday came after Kirk Cousins had more than 2.5 seconds to throw. By NFL standards, Cousins did have time to get the ball out.

Sam Monson
Kirk Cousins has the highest average time to throw in the NFL through 4 weeks.

Restructure would require adding more years, like we did with Rudolph. We're now stuck with Rudolph until 2023 well into his 30s or else a big dead cap hit. Can't believe they did that.
