Bill Johanesen -> Free Agency 2020 (1/11/2020 6:00:11 PM)

The Vikings have some decisions to make with their current roster and where to bring in new players. Free agency technically begins March 18, 3:00 p.m. CST.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/11/2020 6:07:39 PM)

Before listing the usual suspects to cut to save tens of millions, what does it take position-wise to succeed in today's NFL? Actually that question depends on whether we keep Zimmer, because he is not necessarily of today's NFL. So assuming he stays, what will it take for his system to flourish?

What positions need to be upgraded no matter what era we are in? Hint, one is manned by a name used to describe Santa's little helper. Another is based on what automobiles in cities need.

Bisi Johnson was a good find but we really don't have a speed guy.

Wasn't it Madden who said you need to take at least one long shot a quarter? Just to loosen it up a little.

We are in cap hell. Will be interesting to see what kind of magic Bryz can muster, but it will be tough to create much cap space based on what I'm seeing. We're 5 million over the projected cap without signing any of our own FA's or draft picks. Griff looks like the best place to pick up some cap space but I'm not a full fledged capologist.

I think the $5 million figure includes the slotted picks for spot #24.

bohumm -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/12/2020 1:18:21 AM)

Cutting Rhodes, Joseph, Reiff, and Griffen lops about $40 million off the top. I would start there. Convert Cousins' current salary to bonus and extend him four years and you've added another chunk. Resigning Harris is a must, Cook extension and resigning of Waynes seem likely.

OL, OL, OL. A fast WR.

Pro personnel scouting needs to have been on point; we need to find diamonds in the rough.

I like Watts, Udoh, and Hollins WR.....we have some pieces not used much that showed something against Chicago in last game.

IF Zim is given another long term contract, then Oline improvement has to be priority one. The left side of the line was below average, at best. And, the corner spots have to be shored up. Rhodes and Hughes are not consistent at all.

Hughes is coming of an ACL so I would give him another year....Rhodes, Waynes should be gone. They just don't have ball skills.

Rob Viking -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/13/2020 4:32:10 PM)

I am not so sure we get rid of Waynes. Zimmer loves corner depth, so don't think we lose our starters. Rhodes will free up some space.

To me top priorities:

- Sign Harris.
- Extend Cook but Mattison might make him replaceable. If he wants a Zeke like contract I'd say let him walk.
- Get a DT - the way the boys were pushed around in the run game in 4 of our biggest games is very concerning.
- Add CB depth - Really depends what we decide with Waynes.
- Find a G to replace Elf, though that player might be already be in house.
- Find a 3rd receiver - Though the draft is supposedly loaded at WR. Next year's even more so.
- Add another LB, Wilson is ok but he gets pushed around in the run game. Resigning Barr was mistake.

I should also add the looming CBA for 2021 will have an impact, not sure how exactly but there are many issues that need to be ironed out.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/13/2020 4:40:15 PM)

Harris could end up as the highest paid safety in the game. We won't have the cap room to sign him.

Good point. Maybe we roll with Kearse but he may want out.

I would just add that resigning Barr and not letting him get after the QB was a mistake.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/13/2020 5:34:05 PM)

Spottrac cap savings:

Griffen: 13.1 (Weatherly)
Joseph: 10.5 (Jaleel J)
Reiff: 8.8 (Udoh?)
Rhodes: 8.1 (Hughes)

Waynes walks? (Hill?)

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/13/2020 5:52:05 PM)

We need to get a real KR/PR too. I'm not even talking about MS' fumble on Saturday. I know they are mostly fair catches or booted through the EZ, but it was shown the past 2 weeks that if they're not, a good one is a huge weapon.

drviking -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/14/2020 10:56:09 AM)

Sure, but it severely limits where we can trade him - if at all.

agree, thats why i did not put a very high draft compensation for him

by most accounts, he was a legit top 5 QB this year, getting a 3rd/4th seems reasonable

there are several FAQBs this year, too which may reduce the price of a rental

David Levine -> RE: Free Agency 2020 (1/14/2020 1:06:46 PM)

I agree the compensation is reasonable.

My issue is how many teams would he be willing to accept a trade to? Most contenders are set at QB, he's not going to want to go to a loser. And he likely doesn't want to go somewhere, learn a whole new system and teammates for just 1 year and then likely move on again.

I guess if Brady or Brees retire or move on, either one of those teams might be interested in a stop-gap QB for 1 season. But I'm not sure they have the financial ability (or desire) to absorb Kirk.

Plus if we try to trade him and he turns it down, we've likely fractured our relationship with him and it could lead to another long year...

agree with many points

its EXTREMELY unlikely to trade cousins, and/or sign teddy

but it was just my offseason dreamin post

i will post a plan WITH cousins at a later date,

Right. We can't afford both S's making 10ml per. Might have to let him walk. He should have been reupped a season or two ago when we could have got him cheaper.

Maybe draft Winfield?

the way to trade cousins is to give him a raise....

we pick up $15-$20m and the new team gives him $20-$15m for 2020...and we get some picks...didn't the eagles do a little of that with bradford?....
