I watched a mock draft on YouTube (CBS Sports). They had us taking a DE and a WR. The national scribes follow the league, but don't follow the Vikings as closely as we do.

Here is the DE. You know, he might go in the 2nd or 3rd round.

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/julian%20-okwara?id=32194f4b-5702-9663-85a0-2051a10bc13c

The WR was Mims. He may go in the 2nd round too.

Most mocks have Mims late first to early second. He seems to be a very popular choice for the Vikings. First time I ever heard of Okwara. NFL.Com has him around 200 on the big board with a backup who could become a starter grade of 6.26
NFL.Com rates Claypool 6.35 and Shenault with a 6.5 grade. Justin Jefferson for some reason I can't find on their list.

#22 DE Chaisson

#25 OT Jackson

(2) C/G Ruiz

(3) CB Igbinoghene

(3) WR Peoples-Jones

From all I hear Chaisson would be great value as he is #6 overall on the NFL.com big board. They list him as a LB IMO the wrong position. He would be hard to pass on at 22 though. I am coming around on drafting CB first because the quality in CBs is supposed to drop off quite rapidly after the first few while WR and OL are deeper.

With Oden and Zettel, I don't see as big of a need at DE.

And I think WR has to be addressed higher (second round). That is because teams will take away Theilen and there goes the passing game. Then we are one dimensional and defenses can focus on the running game.

Having said that, the positions listed show a real commitment to the OL which we sorely need. So it's all a tradeoff.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/27/2020 11:55:47 AM)

We have enough areas of need, we need to get good value with each pick. Don't reach for one position if there isn't value there. Trade up or back if needed to maximize value on the board depending on how things fall. A lot of holes to fill and depth needed too.

Beyond the endless speculation some of us do here, that's hopefully the way it plays out when we are on the clock.

We can definitely choose from several positions. Ah, the luxury of having multiple needs.

He is fast and we could use an infusion of speed.

Eggsactly. I got the trenches covered and still got talent at both CB and WR. I've done about 25 of these now and this is the only one I completed feeling great about.

Thanks Beo. I know it read poorly when I first did it from copy paste. I have reworked it and it looks a lot better. The numbers you applied to all the picks was one turn behind where drafted. Chaisson was at 22 not 25 and so on.

kgdabom -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/27/2020 7:45:06 PM)

Here's a pretty nice mock I was able to do on the FanSpeak simulator.

22: R1P22
WR HENRY RUGGS III
ALABAMA
25: R1P25
EDGE K'LAVON CHAISSON
LSU
58: R2P26
CB JEFF GLADNEY
TCU
89: R3P25
C TYLER BIADASZ
WISCONSIN
105: R3P41
OT LUCAS NIANG
TCU
132: R4P26
RB ANTONIO GIBSON
MEMPHIS
155: R5P9
G JONAH JACKSON
OHIO STATE
201: R6P22
G JON RUNYAN
MICHIGAN
205: R6P26
DL RAEQUAN WILLIAMS
MICHIGAN STATE
219: R7P5
QB ANTHONY GORDON
WASHINGTON STATE
249: R7P35
LB TANNER MUSE
CLEMSON
253: R7P39
EDGE KENDALL COLEMAN
SYRACUSE

Got Ruggs for the first time and still got Chaisson and one of the best CBs. Got solid OL with depth, but no great OL. The RB Gibson is expected to play WR in the NFL with some great gadget play potential. The LB Muse is expected to play Safety in the NFL.

Without trading up we should have some decent options.

WR Tee Higgins (Clemson)
WR Laviska Shenault (UC)
DE Yetur Gross-Matos (PSU)
IDL Ross Blacklock (TCU)

You don't see Odenigbo as worthy of being our starter at DE? Of course it depends a lot on if we trade Harris and what we trade him for, but it seems to me that we have a screaming need for CB, WR and offensive line. That's what I want to see our first three picks for, even if Harris is gone.

We need a DLine that can get to the QB. It will make all our CBs better.

We will have a DE rotation. Plenty of playing time for both Odenigbo and Gross-Matos.

We rotated 5 DE's last season and lost two to FA.

Need to draft a good one that can contribute.

Clearly it's a need. Hunter was selected in the third round and I see a lot of prospects who will go between the end of the first round until the third round. I would rather trade up in the third round for a player who drops a bit.

We've had good luck picking developmental guys which i don't have a problem with a mid rd guy with some upside. But if a good one slips like Chaissen we should pull the trigger on him.

Chris Olson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/28/2020 11:33:19 AM)

Hi guys, been out of the loop here, but I have $.02 to share

I feel like we will be going CB in first, can't imagine otherwise, and that DE will be the other target...

seems like the depth of DE in this draft isn't great, so I expect we go after DE sooner than later, though with the talk of using 3-4, OLB may fit that mold, too

Conversely, the depth of the WR draft may allow us to pick up a starter in the second round

By Zimmer's own comments about the lower importance of S, I can't imagine we go there in the first 2 rounds, unless there is someone special (is there a special S this year?) that drops to us in the 2nd

DT is a legit option, too...since a back up for Pierce to groom could be found later, a 3-4 type DE/4-3 DT that can penetrate seems reasonable in the first 3

I see us going CB and DE (edge) in the first
WR and OL in the second
the rest of the draft become more open then, though DT and S are still needs...

I just can't see waiting until the third round for an offensive lineman. In other years, sure, but this year they have to do a better job protecting their immobile quarterback.

Bill Jandro -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/28/2020 11:49:56 AM)

Agree Bruce

LG is our #1 need

Chris Olson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/28/2020 12:29:33 PM)

I'm just guessing what I think they will do...OL is absolutely a top need, though, not above CB...

Still think they take OL in 2nd...with the losses to our defense, CB and DL get priority, but if the value is there, OL is something they will certainly do...

having two picks in 1st and 3rd rounds allows for a lot of flexibility

Chris Olson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/28/2020 12:36:29 PM)

sheesh, all this time I thought we had two picks in the second also [:o]

now I don't know what to think...WR versus DL versus OL...

I feel like Zim wants DL...

but OL could trump that for sure

Bill Jandro -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (3/28/2020 1:01:33 PM)

I expect the top 4 OT's to probably be off the board at #22

I'm wondering if a guy like Josh Jones or Austin Jackson (whom both should be available at #25) could be bumped to LG and then bumped out to LT in 2021?
