My take on all Vikings Draft Picks

Players I love from this draft. Round taken and comments.
1Jefferson WR Ridiculously productive. good size, speed, great hands, and good routes.
1 Gladney CB Has held up very well against the best WRs in the land. Incredibly Strong.
2 Cleveland OL Amazingly athletic and looks great on video
3 Dantzler CB Super Aggressive, gets in the face of the WR and held up against Chase.
4 Lynch Dl Big, strong, aggressive. Lives in the opposing backfield
4 Dye LB/S Great athlete and tackling machine. Can play LB and Safety
6 Brandel OL Getting the PFF #1 rated pass blocker in all the land in the 6th round. That's OK with me.
7 Willekes Edge Super Productive Big10 DPoY
7 Hinton G A guard who runs a 4.88 40 and 34 bench reps in the 7th round. Can't be true can it?

The others.
4 Wonnum Edge I think he's a reach, but I thought Hunter was a reach
5 Hand CB/S Nothing stands out. Not bad
5 Osborn WR Great punt returner poor KO returner and OK WR. Would have preferred Donovan Peoples-Jones
6 Metellus S what I would expect from a 6th round safety.
7 Stanley QB Productive, but just seems like a camp body
7 Cole S Good size. what I would expect from a 7th round Safety

Realistic OL, Reiff, Bradbury, O'Neill are the incumbents.

RS says G competition is "wide open":
- Samia
- Udoh
- Elf
- Dozier
- PS holdovers
- All the new guys
- Worldwide audition

If we could find one diamond in the rough.....

They must still hold out hope for TCU guy. He has been on team a long time.

Only ones that are questionable are Osborn and Cole. And probably would have went QB Gordon instead of Stanley.

Hand looks nasty. Step slow so probably a move to safety.

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/26/2020 9:20:43 AM)

Okay, here's my take on the draft:

First off, most people know I am a "need" guy. I see no point in having a draft, if teams are not there to fill obvious needs. As I have said before, drafting for best-player-available is a luxury that only a handful of teams can enjoy on any given year. If a team has no or few immediate needs, they have that luxury.

Secondly, for some teams, it is nearly impossible to fill all of their needs through the draft. There is also free agency, trades, etc...

Thirdly, I view the draft as a four-round ordeal. Very infrequently does a player become an all-pro caliber player from the later rounds. There are those that are exceptions, but they aren't the rule. However, with COVID-19, I think there will be a handful more that come out of this draft.

First off we need to identify needs. My opinion was that the Vikings had four glaring needs....offensive line, corner, wide receiver and a mobile quarterback. It is nearly impossible through a draft to efficiently fill all of those needs. Having said that, there is ways to make one of the needs less apparent as a result of filling one of the other needs. If you want your quarterback to be more successful, give him some help up front and some great weapons to disguise his deficiencies.

As a result, I listed in order the needs of the Vikings as (1) offensive linemen, (2) corner, (3) wide receiver. How did they do?

IMO, the Vikings get a B overall grade. I think they clearly addressed their needs, I'm just not sure they did it well enough to get an "A" on the test. Only time will tell.

First round pick Justin Jefferson (A-) looks like a solid pick. The problem with drafting a wide receiver early is that they, generally speaking, do not produce a lot in their first year. Jefferson is likely going to be pressed into early action, giving him a chance to have a solid rookie campaign. I would have rather had a pure burner to clear up the inside of the field, but he's considered one of the better route-runners in the draft and LSU has been a great resource for wide receivers in recent years. Whether or not he has potential outside is still up in the air, but clearly he had some of the best pass-catching and route-running skills in the draft.

Jeff Gladley (B+) looks like a solid corner in a spot where they have immediate needs. Is he an immediate star, a potential star or just a guy? I would label him as potential star. Nonetheless, corner is a must-have if you want to have a great defense, and he looks like a guy with a lot of potential.

Ezra Cleveland (A-) was a solid pick when the Vikings drafted him. Am I ecstatic about the pick? No. But given the needs up front I was happy he was there. My biggest question mark on Cleveland is the big jump from Boise State to the NFL. He occasionally saw NFL guys in the games he played, but wasn't tested like some of the other linemen in the draft. I would have rather seen the Vikings draft a lineman with their first pick, but only time will tell if the guys in front of him will be exponentially better. Is he a day one starter? That's a big question. I would hope he is, but COVID-19 could have an impact on that.

The Cameron Dantzler (B+) pick was a solid pick where they got him. Again, the Vikings clearly made a point that they understand the need for corners, and they went and found a tested guy. At the end of the day, he has good size, mediocre speed and is a competitor. The Vikings have done a pretty good job at taking corners and developing their skills, so I trust he could be a some-day starter.

I did not like the fourth round at all (D). DJ Wonnum looks like a guy with some upside, but I would have filled an inside offensive line position with this pick. Wonnum looks like a reach to me. Most sites I found did not have a lot of great things to say about him. He's not a great pass rusher and looks like a rotational guy, at-best. James Lynch is just a guy. He doesn't look like a great athlete, but probably gives it 100% at all times. I don't see Lynch as an impact player, but has the potential to be a rotational guy with his effort. Troy Dye is arguably the most interesting pick in the fourth round. He clearly isn't big enough to play inside at linebacker, but looks like a good enough athlete where he could be disruptive from the outside and you can move him around as a result of his athleticism. At the end of the day, the Vikings completely whiffed at addressing interior offensive linemen in the fourth round, and they had three chances.

After the fourth round, I see nothing but practice dummies. All of the movement after the fourth round with trades and such is just arrogance and nonsense. No need to have that many fifth, sixth and seventh round picks. Most of the guys would have been available as UDFA.

OVERALL GRADE "B"

SteveR -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/26/2020 9:23:41 AM)

It seems like the Vikings get an "A" grade every year on the draft, so no surprise there. I pay zero attention to college sports, so I don't know any of the folks drafted. I literally could not name one college football player if you threatened me in March. Hopefully, it all pans out.

For the first time ever, I did a mock draft this year, again, paying ZERO attention to college sports. I just guessed my way through it, didn't even read player biols/measurements or anything, and ended up with this.

The only one I apparently got right was Dantzler. Not bad! :)

My draft:
Josh Jones OT

Andrew Thomas OT

Cameron Dantzler, CB

Amik Robertson, CB

Jason Strowbridge, IDL

Bravvion Roy, IDL

Isaiah Hodgins, WR

Kalija Lipscomb, WR

Tipa Galea'i, EDGE

Tyre Phillips, IOL

David Dowell, S

T.J. Brunson, LB

Looking at Youtube highlights, the 3rd round CB Dantzler looks better to me than the 1st rounder, Gladney.

That reminds me of the year Blair was selected after O'Neil. (both linebackers)

O'Neil, lol.

McNeill.

Fred McNeill.

I stand corrected. I actually was a huge fan of McNeill. I was saddened to learn of his health issues and death- most certainly related to his football playing.

It was Fred McNeill who blocked Ray Guy during the Super Bowl. I can still hear Grady Alderman bellow out, "Super play by Fred McNeill!"

Karl Juhnke -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/26/2020 9:54:22 AM)

I really like what they did with the defensive trio in round 4. Wonnum Lynch Dye. They all have a chance to be regulars for years to come.

I like the Gladney and Dantzler picks more now than I did initially. Both seem like prototype Zimmer guys. Good ‘fit’ picks.

I still think I’d have rather had Aiyuk than Jefferson. But I can understand that Jefferson has the tools to be the most immediate ready Diggs replacement ( if not another Diggs) and that’s what they needed right now. And by the way, Aiyuk landed in a great spot for himself too. He should flourish in that 49er offense.

Totally clueless on the rest. If Cleveland can be O’Neil II, great. If even one or two of the rest ever amount to anything, it’s just the cherry on top.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/26/2020 9:54:27 AM)

Overall I give the Vikes a B+

Got some guys that can contribute right away at WR, CB, Big Nickel, and perhaps T/OG in Ezra.

Intriguing players like Wonnum, Dye, Hinton. And depth at S.

Not enough done in trenches. I wanted a legit DT like Gillimore and a IOL who could compete this year.

Would have liked another WR that could do something different like stretch the field.

Bullets in 2021.

Dennison and Peterson have a lot of work to do.

That should drop our grade to a B-/C+. CB, OG, and WR were our biggest needs by far, with DT and DE close behind, followed by OT to eventually replace Reiff. RS addressed 2 of the 3 in the first round, but that should be a given for any GM.

I can't argue this at all. For me, if this was last year, I would give them a D. I do trust Kubiak/Dennison much more than the organization two years ago. Kubiak has a long history of having functional olines with lower draft picks. Maybe I'm foolishly optimistic after last years draft. But the organization has been hinting they are pleased with Samia and Udoh's development. I'm a big fan of Collins.

The counterpoint is they aggressively tried to trade for Williams.

Not really. They could have had him for damn little draft capital, could have easily outbid SF.

I stated that the org must be pleased with the development of younger players and that they think they could step up. The fact they were aggressively trying to trade for Williams is the counterpoint for that assertion.

The fact they were aggressively trying to trade for Williams is not a fact, because they could have easily have got him for minimal draft capital. Did they stick their toes in the water, probably, but we practically could have got him for the extraneous draft picks we cached away for 2021.

They had a trade in place that Williams refused, links have been posted. The fact that it would have had to include a new contract makes it aggressive regardless of the picks.

Move on KGB.

#1 a trade was never in place, #2 no one seems clear as to when Williams said he would nix a trade to the Vikings, the news broke AFTER we drafted Cleveland, why did it all of a sudden surface? Whether you or I are correct, it's clear that the Vikings drafting Cleveland made them the initial nixers of any Williams deal. And once we drafted Cleveland, any counterpoint is moot, because Williams became irrelevant.

Arguing semantics is hilarious [&:] "Initial nixers of any deal" - I'm dying, you sound like KGB.

Regardless of timing, the Vikings had interested this offseason in Williams. Were in active negotiations WAS - one definition of aggressively pursued. Had come to terms with WAS - another definition of aggressively pursued. Interest, negotiations, terms are the facts and they are undisputed.

Only one name I recognize from the UDFAs is Quartney Davis. He was originally set to sign with Dallas until we made him an offer too good to refuse.
@AaronWilson_NFL
Minnesota Vikings gave former Texas A&M wide receiver Quartney Davis $100,000 guaranteed, including a $10,000 signing bonus. Outstanding deal prompted switch from Dallas Cowboys to NFC North franchise for former Langham Creek standout. Vikings won the bidding war

Considering the deal he has a legit chance to make the team.

I see 4 of the 6 are OL. I'm guessing that's where a FA thinks they have a chance to make the team.

I say that because I see so much of Diggs in him. This team has a history of late round draft picks and UFA's rising to the front. Even last year Bisi Johnson was one of the last picks in the entire draft. This year the crop of WR's was historically deep, so we should not be surprised if this player becomes a big-time player.

Edit: I just checked and Bisi Johnson was THE last WR taken in last year's draft by any team.

The Happy Norseman -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/26/2020 12:36:18 PM)

Assuming our draft picks in the first 3 rounds all pan out, we could really be set up for 2021. We can dump Reiff's big contract, our oline will be young and cheap at both T positions, and we'll be young and cheap at CB. Our WR corps will also be cheaper without Diggs contract. Unfortunately, this year we still have BIG question marks at CB, WR, and OL.

Taking a look at the (likely) post-draft roster, the Vikings have a few needs to fill out via FA. There will be some vets cuts, hopefully a few that can contribute to the Vikings:

CB - we have an influx of talent but almost no NFL experience at the position
S - need depth with NFL experience
OG - currently 3 guards on the roster and one is Eflein(!). Samia will man one spot (33 total snaps in the NFL) and if one of our T move to guard they will have zero NFL experience. Dicey.
WR - very thin at the position, should add a vet with deep speed

If everything breaks right for the Vikings they should be competitive this year, but currently teams like the 49ers and Chiefs seem like they're in a different league than us.

Dicey.

Good stuff. I would add DE and DT to the mix. We were one of the youngest teams the last couple years and got younger. Makes sense to bring Griff back. Be a big year for guys like Watt/Irv to step up.
Guards we have Elf, Collins, Samia, Dozier, Jones - right? Not counting the late rounders drafted.

I think we are more talented in areas than last year (T, CB) and less in others (WR). I enjoy rooting for young players trying to make it vs declining vets.

So now you're just making shit up.

Everything you need to lift the veil of ignorance is out there.

Good luck!!

Over your third grade wit?

Yet you can't seem to get the upper hand, been resorting to the insult game since the get go.

It seems like the Vikings get an "A" grade every year on the draft, so no surprise there. I pay zero attention to college sports, so I don't know any of the folks drafted. I literally could not name one college football player if you threatened me in March. Hopefully, it all pans out.

For the first time ever, I did a mock draft this year, again, paying ZERO attention to college sports. I just guessed my way through it, didn't even read player biols/measurements or anything, and ended up with this.

The only one I apparently got right was Dantzler. Not bad! :)

My draft:
Josh Jones OT

Andrew Thomas OT

Cameron Dantzler, CB

Amik Robertson, CB

Jason Strowbridge, IDL

Bravvion Roy, IDL

Isaiah Hodgins, WR

Kalija Lipscomb, WR

Tipa Galea'i, EDGE

Tyre Phillips, IOL

David Dowell, S

T.J. Brunson, LB

Did you take Jones first and get Thomas at 25.

Never lost the upper hand. Links have been posted; many more on the internet.

But I don't expect anything different from you. Matches your history of condescending snipes and lack of meaningful contributions.
