55% of the offensive linemen that made 1st or 2nd Team All-Pro over the past 5 years were drafted AFTER round #1. #development #coaching @JParolin

(Louis Riddick on Twitter)

So you have a *MUCH* much better shot of getting a stud in the 1st round.

Almost half of them were taken in the first 30 picks.

Quality tackles are hard to get say outside the top 2 rounds. I bet guards and centers are easier to find later.

We'll start with 2019.

1st team:
LT: Ronnie Staley. 1st round, 6th overall.
LG: Quentin Nelson. 1st round, 6th overall.
C: Jason Kelsey. 6th round.
RG: Zack Martin. 1st round, 16th overall.
RT: Ryan Ramczyk. 1st round. 32nd overall.

2nd team:
LT: David Bakhtiari. 4th round.
LG: Joel Bitonio. 2nd round.
LG: Joe Thuney. 3rd round.
C: Rodney Hudson. 2nd round.
RG: Marshal Yanda. 3rd round.
RT: Mitchell Schwartz. 2nd round.

Draft them early.

4 of the 5 1st teamers were 1st round picks.

1st round: 4
2nd round: 3
3rd round: 2
4th round: 1
6th round: 1

Out of the first rd (5 years / from 2015-2019) 6 OL were picked top 10, 3 were all-pro in 2019 ... even top ten blue chippers are a 50 / 50 proposition (if your standard is all-pro 2019).

It doesn't say much. Unless you are losing enough to draft that high and wondering which positions are historically higher percentage to draft that high, or you are thinking of selling the farm to move up that high for an OL.

EDIT: oops, I see Kelsey was 6th round not 1st rd 6th overall. So its less than 50 / 50.

Top 10 pick? Trade down, teams will overpay.

I couldn't say. I have yet to crack the draft code – there is just no way to minimize the gamble.

shewt, IMO Kalil was the best draft maneuver / pick Spielman ever made. Uhhh ... not second-guessing it in hindsight.

Anybody interested in James Proche. I found the following on NFL.Com
You've convinced me. He was ridiculously productive. I got this from NFL.COM
Proche helped the Mustangs achieve a 10-win season in 2019, again earning first-team all-conference accolades after starting all 13 games, tying for the national lead with 111 receptions (1,225 yards, 11.0 yards per catch), ranking in the top five with 15 scores.
That's just under 9 receptions per game and over a TD per game.

Here are some highlights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGOua03RQgg

Possible Vikings draft pick has surgery. Found this on RotoWorld.

Arizona State WR Brandon Aiyuk had core-muscle surgery Tuesday.
With offseason programs in doubt, Aiyuk believed it was worth fixing the issue now before it became an in-season problem. A big-play weapon with experience as a returner, Aiyuk projects as a possible rookie-year starter as a lengthy vertical weapon with 4.50 speed. He's currently projected to be a top-50 selection in the 2020 NFL Draft.

I like Aiyuk for the Vikings, but I have to wonder if he's damaged goods. I was trying to see somewhere how quickly he can bounce back from the surgery, but I didn't. At the very least, I have to imagine his stock will have to take him out of the first round, but he's got a couple of weeks for medical questions to be answered.

Yeah I'm taking him off the board for first round. If this surgery had a prolonged recovery period I think it would be mentioned. I'm guessing he should be fine especially considering that camp will likely start late.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/8/2020 7:03:34 PM)

I heard Arif on the radio today. He seemed to take the viewpoint that I have expressed that it would be better to go corner and offensive line in the first round and take advantage of the depth of the wide receiver draft . Cornerback is the one position that it seems that nobody says we should not make a choice with one of our picks in that first round.

Denzel Mims is a Vikings fan! You have to give him extra credit for saying this:

That's probably the tie-breaker for me. Still maybe Reagor.

What do you all think of Laviska Shenault Jr.? At NFL.com he is the fourth rated receiver. Here's a video. He strikes me as being like a man among boys. He had some injuries last year. I can't see taking him in the first, but in the second it has to be a possibility.

He is a super tough guy, and that has led to injuries. He also can't run good routes right now. He just had surgery for a core muscle injury, and those can be recurring. But he has a nose for the end zone. Kind of like Flash.

I've been talking about him for a while now. He is very physically imposing. He was Colorado's short yardage goal line back and their wildcat QB as well as being their primary WR. He has some injury concerns and I hear he interviewed poorly at the combine. I suppose that should be a negative tie-breaker. I'm so torn over all the WRs in this draft, but there's 9 that I like a lot and just maybe one will last until pick 58. Then the Vikings will pick somebody else of course.

It doesn't seem like we need a shortage yardage guy with Mattison and also we use our fullback, too.

I don't, know. I keep asking the question of which guy will complement what we already have. Somebody at NFL.com likes him a lot, though. He rated ahead of Jefferson, Mims and the rest.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/9/2020 7:48:43 AM)

Will the Vikings trade up to #20? According to this it's a strong possibility.

I wasn't suggesting he be our short yardage guy. I was just pointing out how bad ass he is.

Skimming the headlines I didn't see one suggesting we trade up for 20, but if we did it seems like the idea would be to get Jefferson before the Iggles get him. Which of the 25 predictions included the Vikings trading up for 20?

They said Jacksonville wants to trade back from #20. I thought it makes a lot of sense to get ahead of the Eagles.

You're right. He's not quite as speedy as I am thinking we need to acquire. We lost Diggs and we need a player to replace some of that big play ability.

I looked it up. The cost to move up to #20 would be a 4th rounder. If Henderson or Jefferson are there, as examples, it makes a lot of sense.

We wouldn't offer Jax much. Do you see this as a ploy to get Jefferson?

He's speedy enough. Don't go by his injury slowed combine 40. At least he had the guts to run it. Don't worry about big plays. Shenault would give us big plays.

If we see them as significantly superior to the other WRs and CBs and if nobody else was looking real intriguing for pick 22.

You are correct, sir. That pick is just before the Patriots and everybody knows they lost Tom Brady. So a team like the Redskins might pay big to trade spots- perhaps with two second round selections.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: NFL Draft 2020 (4/9/2020 3:26:54 PM)

Question:. Which receivers offer good route running? Diggs and Thielen are both good at that and it works with Cousins.
