I apologize for being negative but this team will always be a pretender as long as Spielman is in charge. Those G rankings are embarrassing.

No need to apologize. The guard numbers are embarrassing. When the offense is predicated on 30 inside handoffs combined with a straight drop passing game, the guard position is rather important and has been treated as an afterthought.

I can't imagine that Oli Udoh wouldn't be an immediate upgrade over Dozier. It's like the 6 foot wide hockey goalie. You just have to stand there and block stuff.

I'm not going to go down that road. I said the same thing about Samia. Boy was I wrong.

Wouldn’t it be nice to find out and then know what we have going forward? Real game play has been the only way to accurately evaluate our linemen. Heck - the entire roster really.

There's a lot to be said for that mind set. Especially since this team isn't going anywhere this year.

Idk how to go about researching it. But it sure seemed like we had dominant type offenses when we had at least one stud G.

Hutchinson
McDaniel

Even career backup Joe Berger moved the LOS when he finally got his chance.

I don't think there is a correlation.

Hutch was here when we had Ponder and Jackson at QB.

McDaniel was certainly a cog in our 98 offense, but that was when Moss arrived and we were stacked on O.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 1:23:18 PM)

Don't agree with it but they had a basic plan for the offense to run first, but how did they expect to do that with crap guards? Did they really think Elf would turn it on going from C to LG then RG? And have essentially nobody start at LG?

They probably told the Guards to simply ‘impose their will’ on the defenders. You know, because it’s that easy.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 3:27:42 PM)

Elflein and Samia were rather high draft picks for interior offensive lineman. We had hopes for them when they were drafted. Clearly it didn't work out. Our first round center has only been rather pedestrian, too.

And to think folks were raving about the new OL coach and assistant acting deputy to whatever.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 3:42:10 PM)

With 3 games still left to play, this year's #Vikings have already allowed more points than any other year since Mike Zimmer was hired in 2014

Adam Patrick on Twitter

So as much as we have been focusing on the guards today, it's clearly the defense that has held the team back.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 3:44:09 PM)

I asked Nick Olson a question about Bradbury and he answered quickly.

Out of 31 starting centers he ranks 18th. 26th in pass pro, 15th in run blocking. Still needs to get stronger to hold up one-on-one in pass pro but he's a very good run blocker despite being tasked with some of the hardest blocks

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 3:54:30 PM)

So, in case you noticed, I don't just post about how fabulous the team is in such and such a category. I may also post about how crappy we are by a certain criterion. It would be rather boring to talk about how average we are in a certain way.

I tried to think of an example of a category where the team is average, so I looked up Red Zone defense. I was surprised to see the team is tied for fourth in the league. The three teams ranked ahead of the Vikings do not have winning records. Go figure.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 4:20:46 PM)

The Vikings are tied with two other teams as 29th in field goal attempts per game. Only Green Bay has attempted less.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/18/2020 5:44:56 PM)

Is this true? Dan Bailey has missed only one field goal this season under 40 yards and three under 50 yards. He has missed 4 extra points, as well. We might be giving him a bit too much of a bad rap. Maybe.

He's 66.7% on FGs. He's getting exactly the rap he deserves.

Saying he's only missed 3 under 50 sounds OK - until you realize he's only made 10 under 50.

20-29: 3/3
30-39: 3/4
40-49: 4/6
50+: 2/5

D and ST's for sure. D was somewhat expected given the off season but the ST's have been a train wreck. I don't think anyone would've thought the D would be this bad though but when you look at it we lost:

all 3 starting CB's
best edge rusher
decent to solid LB
run stuffing DT we signed in the offseason to replace Joseph

Then lost both CB "replacements" to injury/knuckleheadness
have been playing without our best overall player on the D

It just adds up quickly but yeah, the O is the least of our worries.

I wonder if our special teams suffered because of all the defensive guys that had to do go pretty much full-time on defense instead of special teams

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/19/2020 2:35:41 AM)

Samia looks small in stature, while Cleveland appears much larger. Cleveland looked pretty awesome on his college film, as well as Dantzler.

Jefferson didn't look that amazing on college highlights, but he did seem pretty natural at catching, and had a great name, good genes. I was wondering if his route running would be good, it seems that it is, or is it quickness, smarts and great hands, without great route running ?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/19/2020 2:42:36 AM)

A few weeks ago I considered starting a thread, like I did with Priefer, for talk of firing the current special teams coach.

I also pushed heavy for a long time on the Trib threads, for the Vikes to fire 2ndary coach Richard Solomon. While he was very bad, the real problem was a HC that wasn't going to win it all.

The same could be true now.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/19/2020 2:50:13 AM)

However, I didn't think Mike McCarthy nor Andy Ried would ever win a SB. So maybe it's still possible with Zimmer.

It would be interesting if Zimmer were paired with a QB that has won a SB, or one that appears to be clutch, or is great at bringing back a team to victory, after trailing much of the game.

It would also be interesting to see how Cousins would fare with a HC that has won a SB, or an up and comer like Sean McVay that might bring out the best in Cousins.

Maybe Kevin Stefanski was that guy ? Or maybe the Vikes should roll with Kubiak as HC ?

Considering how poorly this coaching staff misjudged the depth chart at G. They had Samia as the first guy off the bench...

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/19/2020 8:15:49 AM)

With three games left..

Not looking to go very far IF the team makes the playoffs..

I would rather use the live playing time to evaluate the player we have, on the OL, LB, DL, and FFS, field goal kickers.

Why are all the guys we get for kicking, either, able to boom a kick off out of the end zone, or make an extra point, consitantly?

When do we find competency at both?

I think there is a bit of truth to ST play suffering because ST players have become starters, but... I recall that in the past, some of our better starters on defense, also played on ST.

It seems the team has gone away from that, which is puzzling.

I understand not wanting to gas or risk additional injury to starting players, by putting them out there, but if poor special teams play is a result of lack of leadership, and talent, which is causing poor execution and bad field positions and points given up?

What is the advantage?

None IMO.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/19/2020 9:21:00 AM)

With all due respect to everyones opinion I want to try to win all these games, make the playoffs, then play to advance ...

F next year! - I'm past looking to next year for anything.

We get 16 games (+) and an 8 month wait till they suit up again.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/19/2020 10:09:00 AM)

So..

You are a fan of doing the same thing over and over, even though the result is almost always the same...
