I don't think its a fluke (or a lack of talent) that we've only had one season under Zimmer where we haven't been bottom 3rd (or much worse) at forcing fumbles. It appears to be a philosophy at every level of the defense. How often do you see our players go after the ball instead of the tackle on a ball carrier? Definitely not as much as other teams seem to.

2014: 28th
2015: 24th
2016: 21st
2017: 30st
2018: 28th
2019: 6th
2020: 23rd

Last year stands out as a clear outlier.

It is frustrating to be sure.

But I think Zimmer puts a HUGE emphasis on wrapping up the runner and making the tackle.
The second guy should be going after the ball.

Turnovers are huge.

And Zimmer doesn't seem to push much for them.

Even our DBs aren't encouraged to go after the ball much. Priority is making sure the guy doesn't get much after the catch. It doesn't seem like many passes are all that contested imho

I think that will change with Dantzler and Gladney.

Until Zim coaches INT's out of them. Not 100% sure his philosophy is 21st century

Zimmer doesn't believe in those fancy interceptions and cheap forced fumbles. He'd rather see his middle linebacker make a perfect textbook form tackle after an eight yard gain. Let them drive down the field to about our forty-yard line, then actually blitz and get the sack - a standard sack mind you, and then give up a fourth-and-17 to their best WR who beats our prevent-style zone.

Chris Jones loves this philosophy.

Rhodes and Alexander have 3 INTs between them this year. Rhodes had 5 for Zimmer one year.

We suck because our DLine sucks, LBs are injured and we have a terrible NB.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/24/2020 12:27:19 PM)

Six NFL teams have fewer Defensive Sacks than the Vikings in 2020. Flushed face

TEN, LV, CIN, JAX, DET, NE

(Dustin Baker on Twitter)

Of course our sack production has not been good it's not acceptable going forward.

Also, to all the wonderful contributors. I have been on since the Tribune days. Wow that was a long time ago! I have gone from being a college kid to a grandfather as a member of this site! I hope that at least my grandson might see the Vikings win a Super Bowl [:)]

Good Post.
I went from College Kid to Old Enough to be a Grandpa as well.
Used to go to the Computer Lab in between classes and read the strib.
Crazy long time.

Trying to change the subject? That’s fine. Dantzler looks like a stud and gladney looks to be somewhere between a bust and a mild disappointment depending on how he develops. Dantzler had looked like a stud from day 1. Mike hughes’ injury allowed us to see him on the field. Hopefully they promote him to CB1 but I won’t hold my breath. At least he’s on the field.

I hope all my TalkVikes buddies have a great Christmas and an even better New Year (it cannot be any worse than 2020, right?)

SCans skies for incoming asteroids.... puts ear to ground for super volcano rumblings...tries not to look at national debt counter..

Checks nuclear doomsday clock...checks liquor cabinet... peeks at bank account...

Ok... happy new year?

Sorta..

Hope I get a vaccination soon...

Right back at you Joe.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and all that other good stuff to everybody on this great site!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/24/2020 3:56:55 PM)

Tiki Barber on CBS just said that NFL Network reporter (forget who) is reporting that Cousins is on the move in the offseason.

stfrank -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/24/2020 4:09:32 PM)

I hope he is taking Spielman and Zimmer with him.....

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/24/2020 4:17:42 PM)

He didn't mention RS but said Zimmer is safe.

Kiinda what my thoughts are ....

Jeff, what's he mean, "... on the move ...?" We're planning on trading him?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/24/2020 5:51:06 PM)

That's the way I took it. He didn't mention any specifics (like teams). Just alluded to the fact he's not a Viking next year. I've heard of the reporter that he name dropped but not well enough to remember it after the fact.

Tiki has been known to be a loose cannon

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/24/2020 9:18:52 PM)

Lets say Cousins is magically traded this off-season.

Who is the starter in 2021? Trade for Wentz? Trade for Darnold? Trade for Mariotta? A rookie?

IMO Cousins is overpaid and never should have been extended but an alternative isn't obvious to me.

Wasn't him though. He was quoting a legit NFL network reporter. Don't get me wrong, I have no opinion if it's true or not. Just interesting. And what was said above is legit, how could 'he' know?
