Trekgeekscott -> Covid 19 and those infected (5/21/2020 9:14:15 AM)

Here is a thread for those that want to discuss the Corona Virus, those they know etc that are infected and any other related issues.

I will say this. Though I have a solid distrust for most organized religions, I do pray.

I pray every day that we find a cure/vaccine for this disease.
I pray for every person who is infected, including Bruce.
I pray for the family of those who are infected that they not get infected as well and their family members recover quickly
I pray for those that have lost someone to this disease.
among a great many other things....

kgdabom -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (5/21/2020 12:57:23 PM)

Sorry for the crap you are getting. I think the thing you were missing is it was General Vikings because it was Bruce. I appreciate your sentiments in the introductory post. I think it would be good if the Bruce stuff was moved here, but I doubt it will be. I would PM you but that has not been working for me for a long time.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/13/2020 9:54:34 AM)

I appreciate the prayers. I pray for the end of the pandemic every morning, too.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/30/2020 4:31:17 PM)

I got the ok from my doctor to return to work. It's been two and a half months, so I will be like a fish out of water. I'm also working for a new company, but they have been very good to me and explained to me that they are thrilled to hire me.

I'm going to start slow though, and probably stay slow. I'll work part time. I actually think it's good for the company that way and I can can take it a little easy and spend more time with the wife.

I also contacted a plasma center and will donate plasma tomorrow. Hopefully my blood has a lot of good antibodies. I'll find out.

You are thinking so much bigger than I was. I was just praying for your recovery. I'll join you in praying for an end and I'll pass the word on to others.

You are truly a good man. America is great because America is good.

Bruce

What area of the country do you live? We were try to get any info we could when you were in the hospital. I think one poster found the hospital you were at and i googled it, somewhere in Florida?

kgdabom -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/31/2020 9:20:27 AM)

I hear the words Deadly Pandemic thrown out regarding COVID 19 all the time. I have a question that might be sensitive, but I don't know a single person who has died from it. I know Bruce who came close and a girl I collaborate with from another agency who got it and had what amounted to a bad cold from it.
If it's a deadly Pandemic shouldn't I know somebody who died from it? Is there anybody of us who actually knows somebody who died from it. Am I just lucky that nobody I know has died from it?

Better question for you to ask yourself, but also kind of sensitive: "If I'm not a self-absorbed solipsist who thinks things only matter if they directly affect me, would I see the world differently? Would I be able to understand that myriad meaningful, impactful, profound things can happen in the world that have nothing to do with me, and/or do not directly affect me?"

Bohumm nice word solipsist. I never heard it before and won't be looking it up. I asked the question to see if it was affecting anybody else I know like you for example. Asking the question was my way of not being self absorbed. This is being called a Deadly Pandemic. It is pretty much being made to be the equivalent of the Bubonic Plague. I'm just trying to get a better understanding on just how deadly it is in a 2nd hand way, by discussing it with board members. I used the word sensitive, because if you or somebody else does know somebody who has died from it you may not want to share it. However, if people are willing to discuss it then it will help me understand the impact better. A bunch of numbers are far less impactful than actual people I know sharing the impact it has had on their lives.

You seek to understand, but not at the level of effort required to look up a word online. "I want knowledge, but make it easier than highlighting a single word on a computer screen, right-clicking, and moving ALLLLLLLLLLLL the way to another tab or window. I...I....I....I just can't..."

I basically thought you were using that word to be a dick so I wasn't going to humor you on that. If you feel like defining it here go ahead. How about trying to not be a dick and having a legit discussion with me?

Lynn G. -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/31/2020 10:59:17 AM)

KG - (and I find myself having the same conversation with you on two threads) - think of the words "Yet" and "So far."

You don't know anyone who has died from it YET. The number of dead in the U.S. is 153,000 SO FAR.

The level of contagion from this virus is over-the-top, so, left unchallenged, all of the numbers of dead and dying will shoot up like a rocket. I imagine in the early stages of the Bubonic Plague, there were people asking what the big deal was? "I don't know anyone who has it, therefore it must not qualify as deadly."

You're looking at this through a paper towel cardboard tube and completely ignoring the trajectory. If you want to catch a baseball, do you only focus on it when it leaves the other guy's hands? Because if you do it's going to bonk you on the head.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/31/2020 11:12:26 AM)

Pretty sure the Bubonic plague wiped out entire villages and towns leaving no one alive in it's wake.

Lynn I just think people are using panic terminology and in general I think panic is a bad thing. I really appreciated the post DL made on the Twins board, but I did throw in a couple of questions regarding it. I started this because I wanted to know how COVID-19 was affecting other members of the board. I personally am following at least most of the recommended procedures to fight this virus. I'm not sure if I'm following all of them, but I'm not knowingly disregarding a single recommendation.

kgdabom -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/31/2020 11:13:07 AM)

Great post from DL over on the Twins Board that I thought would be good to bring here.

Damn it. I can't copy and paste it. If you want to read it maybe DL can post it here or you can go to the Idle Talk thread of the Twins board.

Exactly. That was a deadly pandemic assuming it made it to all the world which I'm not sure if it did. Is COVID-19 a deadly pandemic? Like Lynn said it's a question of how you define it. Bill do you know anybody who has died from COVID-19?

Don't forget that not all of the people who have died are Americans. This is causing death all over the world, so it may not be surprising if some of us here don't personally know anyone who has died of it, because many of those people used to (I say that because they are dead now) live in Italy, or Brazil, or China, or France, or Australia ...

Look at the numbers all over the world and then argue that it's not deadly enough to qualify.

Bill Jandro -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/31/2020 11:19:27 AM)

There have been very few cases in my county. But I'm in a very rural area. Most of the cases that did happen were due to it either being introduced by someone passing through, or in one instance, a nursing home worker contracted it at a party in madison and ended up killing 12 elderly people in the home he worked at.

But as Lynn touched on, it's just a matter of time before it touches everyone's lives in some shape or form. In fact, isn't suppose to eventually infect almost everyone in the country?

No. keeping my fingers crossed though.

I also said to focus on the words "yet" and "so far." We're seven months into this thing and you're calling it done? There is absolutely NO indication that this thing is over. Again, every plague or pandemic starts with just a smattering of deaths here and there. Scientists understand things like transmission and cures. Covid 19 has one of the most aggressive means of transmission in all viruses, and there is no cure.

I've been hearing that America is doing a horrible job controlling it so we should have one of the worst death rates. If that is true it seems that everybody should know at least one person who has died from it. I'm not trying to be callous. I'm just trying to get a handle on how deadly this virus is.

Bethesda Hospital in St.Paul by the state capital. I was there during the riots.

My home is in Eagan. (Maybe 5-20 minutes from the Vikings facility)

You are making assumptions Lynn. Where did I ever say this is over? Where did I ever say we shouldn't take steps to fight it? I am in favor of moving on with our lives while continuing to take reasonable precautions. I'm wearing a mask, not hanging out in crowds, sanitizing my hands regularly.

Lynn G. -> RE: Covid 19 and those infected (7/31/2020 11:29:06 AM)

You keep falling back on whether you know someone who has died from it. Here's an idea - spend a day in the ICU of a major hospital in a large city. How about Houston? or Miami? If you actually need to see something up close and personal in order to believe it exists, that's probably the way to go.

I have never seen Mt. Everest, but I believe it exists.
