ORIGINAL: Bruce Johnson This suggests there will be a fair number of defensive tackles available in the third round. However, some of the better prospects are bigger (ie. probably nose tackles) or lack pass rushing ability. Do you see it that way? I'm saying that there is more pressure to select in the first round based on what I'm seeing. https://walterfootball.com/draft2021DT.php And at DE I see some high enders that will go in the first round, but the pickings might get skinny by the third round. There will be projects there that can be developed and that has been what the Vikings like to do based on history. I'm thinking that if you want a starter you better get one in the first round. https://walterfootball.com/draft2021DE.php We saw what a good pass rush can do to an elite offense. Get the stud DT at #14 and find a DE later. We also saw what a good pass rush can do when guys are covered. Mahomes didn't have time to even look at his WRs before he was running for his life. He threw 49 passes. It's very challenging for a defense to cover guys when the play has broken down. They did a phenomenal job on the back end. It's almost as if you guys haven't watched a Kansas City game all season. He's been running for his life all year. I think you're rewriting history to fit your own narrative. He was sacked three-or-more times in five games this season. The kid is always on the run. He's not one to throw it into the stands like Brees or Wilson. He's always trying to make a play. He was sacked 22 times all year. That's 23rd in the NFL. He had a very good offensive line until the past few weeks where it was ravaged by injuries. Mike Remmers was his starting LT... The moment I read his 'sacked three-or-more times in five games' line I knew it was a cherry-picked stat. The timing was so predictable. I guess you guys are right. Nobody was covered on the 49 passes he attempted. Give me a break. It's almost as if you have never watched the guy play before. That is what he does. He rarely throws from the pocket. The guy is freakishly good at it. He throws while back-peddling. He throws on the run. He throws while running left. He throws while running right. He throws while moving forward out of the pocket. The difference this time around ... guys were covered. It also doesn't hurt that Tampa has arguably the best linebacker unit in the league. Those guys can all run like the wind. That's a talented defense all-around. It wasn't just the guys up front. You just might need a break if you can't tell the difference between yesterday's pressure and what he faced every other game. It wasn't close. There is a difference between throwing on the move and running for your life and trying to wing it before getting crushed. He wasn't just not planting or changing his arm angel. He was throwing prayers with both feet off the ground and barely looking at his target. Even his completions were nowhere near where he wanted them to be. Its amazing he didn't have half a dozen picks. He scrambled for 500 yards before throwing the ball yesterday. Nobody has said the LBs and DBs played poorly. But he wasn't getting killed because of coverage. A 4 man rush was routinely a jail break. If they brought a blitzer he was on Mahomes before the ball even got to him. When a guy gets beat up and pressured, it's easy to give credit to the guys up front. I never said they didn't play well. What I said was, they were helped by great coverage. Kansas City has been mediocre (at-best) up front all season. Mahomes is one of the great scramblers in the game right now. He makes plays on the fly. It's what he does. It's very challenging for a defense to cover wide receivers for 6-7 seconds while he's running around trying to make a play. Nearly impossible to cover Tyreek Hill that long. They had those guys blanketed all day. When Kansas City goes a game without scoring a touchdown, you can't just credit the 3-4 guys up front. That's what was thrown out there yesterday morning by some (not you, but others). We'll probably have to agree to disagree. The entire defense played well on Sunday. I would have given the game MVP to Devin White. The kid is freakishly good.
