If our 1st pick isn't OL then Rick just doesn't get it.

First round. What I think the Vikings will do. What I hope the Vikings do:

What they will do: DL/edge *

The main topic seems to be OL. Yes that's a perennial need it seems. But I think they go DL/edge. It's been several years now since they've picked DL in the first round. combine that with the nondescript, bland performance of the line last year, combine with Zimmer's focus on defense and I just think it's by far the most likely scenario. They'll figure they can bolster OL later, and get the blue chip DL in round 1. YEs I know there aren't many of them this year, but the Vikings are not drafting very high either, and the may move down more. See disclaimer. So most likely is Michigan guy?

What I hope they do: Same. DL/edge.

This is one of those years where I'm in agreement. They need a defensive line monster. Yes I know the OL needs help...as always. And I'm usually urging them on to get it. But last year the DL was worse. Yes I know Hunter was hurt. But the ragtag group they limped through the season with last year was pathetic. Near the bottom in sacks. And they didn't pressure or disrupt anybody. The DL is in far worse shape then the OL.

* A disclaimer:
Having said all that. There is no way trader Rick sits out the 2nd round. It would absolutely kill him. The Vikings 100% will have a second round pick one way or another. So that likely means a trade down? We'll see.

Agree and disagree. OL was far worse, and they're getting back both Pierce and Hunter along with the additions of Weatherly and Tomlinson. Wonnum is developing as well.

There has been no upgrade for the horrendous IOL, and tackle is far worse with the departure of Reiff.

If the Vikes don't go IOL in the first, they'd better be stellar the rest of the way or it could be a very long year.

I still say even though nobody talks about it, DL was under the radar worse than OL last year.

The reason I say under the radar is, it’s more noticeable when the OL is bad. More immediate. The QB is getting sacked, hurried, running for his life. It’s less visible when the DL is doing poorly because the result is lack of pressure. So you see opposing QBs week after week sitting comfortably in the pocket calmly surveying the field.

2020 was the least disruptive DL the Vikings have had in a long time. And nobody besides a healthy Hunter excites me. All under performing and replaceable.

We got 2 pro-bowl types returning to the DL, and our top free agency signee is DT. True we likely won't have a probowler at each spot, but we might well have 2. Maybe 3.

Purple glasses. We have one legit pro bowler. The rest are average at best.

I just checked the posts from 40 years ago and there are a bunch of posters saying the O-line needs help but none from kg.

Guilty as charged LOL. We as Vikings fans had been so spoiled with more or less stellar O Line play since I became a fan in 1970 that we didn't realize how lucky we were. I think the line fell apart in 2014 the year before Peterson's final rushing title. That's the time frame I'm talking about. It's been horrid ever since. Before that any complaints about our O Line were just whining from malcontents give or take maybe a down year or two.

Negative. Many substantial, legit OL complaints before you.

Bottomline is 75% of the DL is good to go. 20% of the OL is good to go, 20% needs an upgrade (Bradbury), 20% is unknown (Cleveland to LT), and 40% is a void.

Best case...we land Sewell.

Worst case...we draft an edge rushers at 14 and don't get to address OL until 91...having traded down with our 1st 3rd.

I don't see how Sewell is part of any equation.

Two guards at 30-45 > one guard at 14 and the obligatory 3rd rounder.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/29/2021 6:53:00 PM)

And part of the goal of the draft is to draft better than your competition. Difficult to do with Spielman giving away a 2nd rounder like Halloween candy

Everyone was aware that our DL blew chunks last year, not sure what you point is with this discussion as we have already rebuilt it for 2021 arguably stronger than 2019 (on paper).

kgdabom -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/29/2021 7:21:23 PM)

I hear that Micah Parsons is the shit. If he's a perennial All Pro he could be a better choice than a Vera-Tucker. Picking OL with our first pick should not be a lock. This from a man who believes OL is the most important position. We still should have an open mind.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (4/29/2021 7:23:25 PM)

Picking OL with our first round IS a lock..

And has for well over a decade.

10 minutes of waiting for a team to pick a player they likely already have a contract built for.

He's awesome, but he's only a benefit if he's an upgrade. He's not as good as Kendricks, in my opinion, and we usually run 2 lb's on defense. Take the best guard or otackle on the board. get better at a position of weakness.

Now honestly I don't know if he is head and shoulders better than Vera-Tucker, but if he is we should take him given that choice.
