I like having Hunter back. But Spielman did blink and gave a player with no leverage all the leverage going forward.

The Vikings are about to re sign Sheldon Richardson.

He'll be a very good fit replacing Pierce on passing downs.

Our depth beyond Pierce and Tomlinson is unproven at this stage evident by watching last seasons debacle.

Raiders thought they had leverage on Mack also as did the Rams on Donald....great players have leverage no matter what.

Hopefully Hunter returns to form. The neck injury is still a huge concern if it gets reinjured.

But he is essential for this team to make some noise.

Salary-cap analyst Jason Fitzgerald had #Vikings entering today with $11.9 million cap room. Assuming they picked up $3.73 million with Danielle Hunter move and that their four unsigned third-round picks will take about $500,000 or so, then they'd be at about $15 million cap room

And some posters thought we were in cap hell (me included) to make any moves...now we still have money left????

A lot of cap space has been created this year at the expense of the future.

Next offseason we will watch a lot players walk. 45ml due to Cousins 20ml Hunter...

Spielman is pushing the chips in to the center of the table. Mostly just to save his own ass at the expense of the future. Nonetheless we should/better make a deep run this season.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/15/2021 8:16:58 AM)

Barr will get paid $5 million next year and the year after while not being under contract.

Next year will be tough cap wise with Cousins $45M, Cook's deal kicking in, along with the usual suspects like Kendricks, Theilen, etc. but it doesn't take much to change the cap dynamics to where we are looking ok.

Conversely, I recall the days we'd have like $40 M in 'surplus' cap, and after a few somewhat average FA signings and an extension we'd be down to just the rookie pool cap.

Maybe we will roll some cap to next year. The cap should go up, although the actual figure is unknown. Probably safe to plan using $200 M.

There probably won't be many one year vet deals available either.

They really aren't...how do we have 11-15 million of cap right now? They aren't signing any more big contracts....they probably could move Kirk's/Cook's/etc. money to this year maybe to leave more room for next year...

it's looking like at the end of the 4th year hunter will have averaged about $17m+/yr with the original extension....

I'm assuming that we can still trade hunter if we decide not to retain him in 2022....

there was about $16m of bonus/restructure money that had not been accounted for yet under the old deal...i wonder how all of this is going to affect hunter's actual 'cap hit' in 2021/22....

I don't understand why Patterson is thought overrated on this site (and others).

Bill posted all those drafted. Obenigbo, Stephen, Weatherly were all 7 rounders who got second contracts with other teams (didn't we draft weatherly and stephen in the 7th rounds?). That's pretty phenomenal. Hunter to all pro. Griffin - I personally believe, was helped by Patterson.

Floyd was the only first or second round draft pick while Patterson's been here. True we've signed several guys, but only Joseph for relatively big money. Not other position group has gotten less $ and draft capital (without looking it up - maybe RBs?). And other than last year we've had very good DL.

I love Patterson, and I think he deserves a lot of credit for Hunter's development. I look at it from the other side, too, that says probably Hunter would just as good, give or take, anywhere he played.

Love having both.

Patterson's greatest contribution to Hunter's success with the Vikings is that he lobbied for the Vikings to draft him in the first place. Patterson is a good position coach and a good judge of pass rushing talent, but Hunter was going to be Hunter no matter where he went. Coming out of college, he was a physical freak, who was a fast learner with a great work ethic. Just too good to not succeed. He was the youngest player in the draft by far and just needed time to develop.

Maybe not. The salary cap is supposedly going to increase exponentially over the next couple of years.

No need. Any unused cap rolls over year to year.

Great point on Patterson being key to him drafted. I also think it says a lot that Weatherly said what he did about Patterson and wanting to come back. Sheldon Richardson wanting to come back is another example.

Work ethic, talent, etc are key. But I don't think anyone (EDIT: "anyone" is a little exaggerated to make the point) makes it in the NFL without the right coaching and right situation. Zimmer has been talking about 1 thing Hunter needs to do that will make him unstoppable. I think he made those comments after or during the 2019 season. He wouldn't say what.

Think Brady is GOAT if he gets draft elsewhere? I don't.

They actually got Sheldon Richardson?

The Vikings have officially re-signed DT Sheldon Richardson.

Richardson was arguably the best free agent available on the market and gets the chance to play at a high level amongst a very talented defensive line. Impact addition.

Sure, why not? Brady's success has a lot to do with his talent and work ethic more than coaching, imo.
Somewhere up above it was said of Hunter he was going to succeed with our coaching or someone else's.
Same with Brady. We're not talking a gulf between levels of coaching ability like it's high school. There should be some pretty talented coaches just about every where in the NFL.
Since I first game on this board, following the disaster of the end of the 98 season, I've always felt like too much credit is giving to coaching (ok, maybe Sherman is a bad example ;).
The level of wanting to succeed has to be out of this world when you get to this level.

Couple thoughts on timing/execution of Danielle Hunter's reworked deal reported by
@RapSheet

1. The details (i.e. the $18M roster bonus in 22) seem to indicate the Vikings are pretty confident they'll get an extension done before the 5th day of LY

Courtney Cronin
@CourtneyRCronin
·

2. Lot of folks I spoke w/ recently pointed out lack of leverage for Hunter in negotiations coming off neck surgery. Vikings seemed to have handed him a ton of leverage w/ the way this deal is worked out in 2022. If Hunter says no to proposed ext, then he either gets cut or $18M.
3. If Hunter wants to stay in MIN, he's probably going to be able to force his hand to get what he wants no matter how $$$. Sure, the reason the Vikings did it this way was to essentially say "OK, prove you're healthy & can be the same player you were in 2019 and then some and "then we'll talk," which is the right move, but now Hunter has more leverage than before to dictate negotiations. If he doesn't want to stay in MIN in 2022/beyond, Vikings have to trade him or cut him.

Or slap the Franchise tag on him.

Exactly. The Vikings have plenty of leverage if they want to keep Hunter. This is all worst case scenario stuff, though. The Vikings have shown that they will pay big money to retain the players they want. If Hunter lives up to expectations this year then the Vikings will give him a new deal that pays him what he's worth as an elite DE.

I disagree to an extent. It's the nature vs nurture argument in human development. Coaching is also about scheme which is HUGE when it comes to success in the NFL. And I've seen too many coaches not succeed in the NFL to say there's parity at the NFL coaching level.

I'm not disregarding talent/desire/etc AT ALL. But I believe its a yin and yang scenario.
