ORIGINAL: Tom Sykes I'm just glad our medical staff spotted this nagging little problem during the pre-draft process or it could be worse Darrisaw could be missing practice time and maybe even have to go in for a follow-on procedure. (unused script for today's media session) we can stop wondering why darrisaw fell to the Vikings at 23...we can stop thinking that spielman made a brilliant maneuver to get more picks and draft a top-tier tackle.... this is what happens when you use all of your young tackles as guards - instead of just signing a decent phucking guard - the vikings are near the bottom of 'money teams are spending on their offensive line' this year.... and what about our big free agent wide receiver?...will he ever see the field as a viking?.... sooner or later, spielman will be signing larry fitzgerald.... I didn't know it was a career ending injury. That stinks. I don't know that it is career ending, but think about it it's core surgery and if your hobbled off season as a rookie you need to work on core strength and he wouldn't have been able to do any of that I just think that there is a lot of overreacting going on. upgrading the o-line should have been the easiest part of spielman's job this offseason...a solid left tackle in reiff is on the team, several free-agent guards available, the best guard in the draft available at 14, we're seemingly in good shape with young tackles with o'neill, cleveland and udoh.... are we in worse shape at o-line than last season at this time?...yes am i bolding my text to make a stronger point?...no, i just can't figure out how to un-bold it.... Looking a lot like we should have kept Rieff. Your absolutely right regarding Spielman and his lackluster oline building. I believe we've been at #32 the last 2 years in oline spending. Spielman just refuses to spend any cap space on this unit and it shows. Relying on rookies is foolhardy at best. The only time he did invest cap space in the oline we went to the NFCCG. KC had a weak oline that really got exposed in the SB. Their GM went out and did something about it. meanwhile Spielman has spent a decade as gm and still doesn't get it. It’s that easy to fix.. Draft guards to play guard… if you want pass blocking guards, draft good guards from pass happy college teams . If you want run blocking linemen.. obviously draft from run oriented colleges. Stop pounding square tackels into triangle shaped guard holes and draft players who have been learning skills at the position of need, then NFL level them up with bulk, muscle, and technique. It would help to have an OL coach and training staff capable of improving a player’s toughness and endurance to NFL standards. Lame. You don't get it. Not only is our regime smarter than everybody else Their secret IOL recipe (which has been passed down for generations, it feels like) ... prioritizes IQ scores, love-of-football and short-shuttle times over god-given talent, skill, football strength and toughness. Bony, angular and gaunt are the special sauce. Yup, our vaunted zone blocking scheme that requires small, fast guys for pulling but get pushed back into the QB if they aren't pulling.
