According to Overthecap, the Vikings have $13 million dollars to work with and a roster that is pretty much set everywhere except at oline. As usual. Spielman needs to get on the phone with Russell Okung and Austin Reiter and get them in camp. Yes, they are both older and have injury histories, but this team already needs reinforcements.

Agree. Hill is going to be a turnstile.

LT Orlando Brown would have made A LOT of sense, I hear they really like him in KC. He is working with Mahomes on things they can do together against certain matchups.

And if you are Mr. Brown... why on earth would you choose the Vikings over the Chiefs?

Because the missing piece or two is all that is needed to get over the top?

I would think the Chiefs would seem like a far better bet to get over the top than the Vikes to an objective FA... ymmv

I would have loved Brown as a FA but once the Chiefs entered the picture I don't think you can fault the Vikes for losing out.

Now could they have found SOME FA LT? You know... like the guy they had at LT last year who played pretty solidly... yeah, absolutely...

But Brown wasn't coming here.

Actually he very well could have. Brown was not a FA and only demanded to either play LT or be traded. KC simply out bid us.

And that is how you stick your whole foot in your mouth!

I was completely wrong... was aquired for 2nd round pick... which we didn't have so would have required some wrangling... but would have certainly been an upgrade to where we are at.

Hoping for the best with Darrisaw/Davis.

Darrisaw could be missing practice time and maybe even have to go in for a follow-on procedure.

(unused script for today's media session)

we can stop wondering why darrisaw fell to the Vikings at 23...we can stop thinking that spielman made a brilliant maneuver to get more picks and draft a top-[/b]tier tackle....

this is what happens when you use all of your young tackles as guards - instead of just signing a decent phucking guard - the vikings are near the bottom of 'money teams are spending on their offensive line' this year....

and what about our big free agent wide receiver?...will he ever see the field as a viking?....

sooner or later, spielman will be signing larry fitzgerald....

I didn't know it was a career ending injury. That stinks.

I don't know that it is career ending, but think about it it's core surgery and if your hobbled off season as a rookie you need to work on core strength and he wouldn't have been able to do any of that

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2021 3:45:50 PM)

The Vikings probably could have given the Ravens a 3rd this year for Brown, and a 4th next year, and it sounds like the Vikings have some money to pay him.

A missed opportunity, but I would strongly considering moving Cleveland to LT RIGHT NOW, I think he would do all right there.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2021 3:47:46 PM)

Ok. Who would play LG then?

Not enough

The deal sends Kansas City's first-round pick (31st), third-round pick (94th), the first of their two fourth-round picks (136th) and their 2022 fifth-round pick to Baltimore in exchange for Brown, the Ravens' second-round pick (58th) and their 2022 sixth-round pick

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2021 9:43:51 PM)

I thought KC gave up more than just a 2nd rounder, so it would have been a lot for the Vikes, and the Vikes probably weren't that close to being a contender anyway.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/13/2021 9:46:49 PM)

If Cleveland were to prove to be a solid LT, that would significantly decrease the importance at LG, I am sure they could then find someone serviceable there.

They still have a little money to play with, maybe there is a serviceable guard they can pickup ?

upgrading the o-line should have been the easiest part of spielman's job this offseason...a solid left tackle in reiff is on the team, several free-agent guards available, the best guard in the draft available at 14, we're seemingly in good shape with young tackles with o'neill, cleveland and udoh....

are we in worse shape at o-line than last season at this time?...yes

Looking a lot like we should have kept Rieff. Your absolutely right regarding Spielman and his lackluster oline building. I believe we've been at #32 the last 2 years in oline spending. Spielman just refuses to spend any cap space on this unit and it shows. Relying on rookies is foolhardy at best.

The only time he did invest cap space in the oline we went to the NFCCG.

KC had a weak oline that really got exposed in the SB. Their GM went out and did something about it. meanwhile Spielman has spent a decade as gm and still doesn't get it.

It’s that easy to fix..
Draft guards to play guard… if you want pass blocking guards, draft good guards from pass happy college teams .

If you want run blocking linemen.. obviously draft from run oriented colleges.

Stop pounding square tackels into triangle shaped guard holes and draft players who have been learning skills at the position of need, then NFL level them up with bulk, muscle, and technique.

It would help to have an OL coach and training staff capable of improving a player’s toughness and endurance to NFL standards.

DavidAOlson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/14/2021 10:48:51 AM)

NFL says every team is more than 75% vaccinated. So that means a few more Vikings have gotten vaccinated recently.

Reportedly 28 teams over 85%, and I'd guess the Vikes are not one of them, yet. And 15 teams are over 95%.

https://twitter.com/JFowlerESPN/status/1426512651182612481

What probably doesn't get enough emphasis: because this year's Delta strain is so much easier to transmit, players should both be vaccinated and continue as many precautions as reasonably possible (meet in well-ventilated areas, N95 masking, etc.).

Unconventional yes, but Cousins should play three qtr this week. Hopefully his gets sacked three or more times as well. The last few years it’s seems like he plays like crap for a few games, until he gets banged around and berated a bit. Let’s just get that out of the way earlier this year. He seems to need a little wake up call to pull on his big boy pants and get going.

He's been kicked around pretty good so far this season by just about everyone - maybe that'll be enough ...

Am I the only one perceptive enough to see through Cousin's reverse psychology?

Obviously, the more he pooh-poohs vaccination, the more other players will vaccinate to seem more 'cool'. Once his influence has worked through the roster, I'm sure he'll jab.

This is probably a trial version concocted with Zimmer.

Trial 2.0 is having Cousins do the pre-game 'pep talk' where he asks everybody to be kind to the other team ("they just want to win too!") ...

in the hope that we will destroy, dismember, and ravage opponents like a band of godless blood-thirsty mongrels.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/14/2021 2:19:26 PM)

From the strib's '5 things to watch' today:

After Christian Darrisaw had his second surgery of the year on a lingering groin injury on Thursday, left tackle Rashod Hill left the Vikings' practice with an injury on Thursday afternoon, forcing Blake Brandel to play left tackle on the first-team offense. The Vikings' health status on the left side makes the offensive line even more a subject of intrigue; the team is still trying to determine whether Oli Udoh should start ahead of Dakota Dozier at right guard, whether third-round pick Wyatt Davis can contribute as a rookie and what depth it has behind Garrett Bradbury at center.

I thought they were just playing Brandel because of Darrisaw ... I didn't realize Hill got dinged.

Has Cleveland ever gotten significant practice time at OT? I honestly don't remember ...

Last year we traded for Ngakoue 08/30, the year before it was Mark Fields 08/31 (and traded away G Isidora 08/31- I don't even want to know if he's doing well) ...

Waiver claims and loose scraps won't do it, can't we please bump it up a couple weeks and take on a bubble OL veteran that gets some competitive preseason time for once?
