I'd like to know what the average field position is on return to kicks since they put the touchback at the 25. I'm betting it's before the 25

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/9/2021 7:41:39 PM)

Since 2018, average field position after a kickoff is 27.15.

I have very little to no problem with Cousins. Especially this year but he's going to be a massive problem moving forward. There are 3 outcomes:

1. You keep him and he eats way too much cap so you can't build around him
2. You extend him which keeps him around longer than I/many want
3. You trade him and bring in a new, similar, problem

No good way out of that last extension.

If the goal is to get rid of Cousins while minimizing the financial impact, then a trade is the only viable option. It would cost the Vikings $10M in dead cap space, but you would save his $21M salary for the year and the following year's balloon payment of $45M. By all means do it, if it is part of a grand plan to get Watson or #1 in the draft.

Don't do it as a cost saving maneuver. If they aren't going to upgrade from Cousins, then they need to restructure him and put a real offensive line in front of him. Whether people want to admit it or not, he is a top 10 QB. He isn't Brady, Mahomes, Wilson, Breeze, Watson or Erin, but he is in the next tier. Put a good team around him and he will win.

I think the only realistic option is if Carolina were to come knocking.

If they were to offer Bridgewater and other compensation it's possible Spiel/Zim would listen.

However, it would be a 20ml cap hit to trade Cousins not 10ml per sportrac.

Bridgewater is due 23ml next season. He can be cut in 2022 with only a 5ml cap hit.

So, if my math is right if we were to trade Cousins for Teddy it would cost us 23+20+5=47ml
That's better than 76ml for 2 more years of Cousins.

The beauty of this is that Carolina might offer maybe the 8th pick which we'd could get QBOTF with but his rookie salary would need to be added to this equation.

So since about 60% are touchbacks, then the average field position after a return would be just under inside the 26. I wonder if the median FP after a return would be significantly different.

Sourced reporting from the Vikings beat writer at The Athletic:

"Because of that, speculation has escalated recently that the Vikings might look to trade Cousins. But the Vikings don’t seem to share that sentiment. The team hasn’t made a single call to another team looking to trade Cousins, according to a source. They want to be in contention for a playoff run and believe they have a team that can do that with Cousins at the helm. They don’t want to get worse at quarterback."

Doesn’t say anything about fielding calls.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/10/2021 1:18:13 AM)

We couldn't possibly expect the Vikings to be honest about whether they have made any phone calls about Cousins trades if they have. It is possible they have not, but I'm sure they have received calls.

I would have no issues trading Cousins for Minshew and a couple of high draft picks....same with the Jets for Darnold. I like those two gun slingers plus they probably could still draft Lance. Double down on QB for once.

In what world are Darnold and Minshew "gun slingers"?

I don't know coming in as an undrafted rookie and throwing 21 TDs and 6 Ints (Minshew).
For Darnold they basically took away his best weapon Robbie Anderson 2019 (Rookie year 21 TD 13 Int) and he had the Jets in the playoff chase until he got Mono.

This is all my opinion but I have watched both play and they both have a something that I think Cousins is missing. I have watched both play and for young guys they really bring it. I would take either one right now.

The ugly of this is that Carolina is not at all likely to see Cousins as a piece that is going to make them legitimate in 2021.

Cousins also has a lot that they are missing. Accuracy, for one thing. I watched Darnold throughout his time at USC, and he definitely has the intangibles. But throughout college, he had problems with turnovers and errant throws.

And, reminder, the Vikings just promoted Cousins' QB coach specifically to continue doing what they've been doing BECAUSE THEY LOVE IT. Hear what they say, and don't say: the Wilfs, Spielman, and Zimmer think they've done a great job, and it's only the players and bad luck that did them in.

Of course they'd field calls. I'm currently fielding calls for my house, which is not on the market and there are no plans to move.....ever. But if someone calls and offers me something I can't refuse, guess what? I'm moving, now. Of course they take calls.

Russell Wilson is complaining he is getting hit too much. I suppose we're in the running to get him too.

Damn, the best laid (new) pie in the sky plans go right out the window when someone brings up the other team's perspective.

This writer, who had reported on the rumors of the Rams trading Goff to the Lions a while back, believes it's possible Seattle trades Wilson:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/seahawks-russell-wilson-wants-to-be-involved-in-roster-moves-reacts-to-recent-trade-rumors/

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/10/2021 10:33:13 AM)

If Wilson is feeling he wants to go because he's hit too much, or running for his life, and would accept a trade to Minny, walk away slowly. He's clearly not thinking straight from all the hits.

Minor details.

Russell wants to come here and we'd be fools not to pursue him.

Update: Cousins to Seattle is trending on Twitter.

A bold and beautiful plan is in the works.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/10/2021 10:52:39 AM)

Spielman fielding calls for Cousins as we speak:

- SF offering Garoppolo, their first (#12 overall), and third

- Carolina offering Bridgewater and the #8 overall

- Seattle offering Wilson and "picks"

Inside sources say Spielman will talk deals only during incoming calls, and calls that he and he alone specifically fielded.
