Klint Kubiak officially OC.

I'm fine with this. I just hope he'll be less predictable in the running game. I'm fine with being known as a running team bc being able to run opens up so much. We need less 1 yard and a cloud of dust on 2nd down and 1 for example. Watching Cook slicing and dicing for 9 or 10 yards is great though. Surgical strikes vs painting with a wide brush.

I am, too, in spite of the weird nepotism that permeates the coaching staff. Let Zimmer and Spielman sink or swim doing it their way. Hopefully the kid has heard of passing to a tight end, though.

At least Klint will bring some semblance of continuity. The offense has not been helped by the yearly changing of the OC. Shore up the middle of the O-line and the offense could be really high powered.

Maybe the kid thinks we should open it up more.

My guess is that would have kept him from being promoted. My hope is that he will use a little more motion, be a little more creative with route combinations, use the TE a little more, etc.

Oh, and know where to find two new guards.....

I feel like there's very little chance we win less than 10 games next year.

I would say it's doable, but there are a lot of things that have to happen defensively to make it happen.

-Pierce's return should help the middle of the line, but they still need a 3T and depth in the middle.
-Hunter's return (provided he doesn't force a trade) will help the pass rush. Odenigbo was not up to the task of being the primary pass rusher.
-The progress and health of our young CB's will be key. They still need more depth.
-I've gone from assuming Barr will be gone to assuming Barr will be back. It was pretty obvious how much we missed him against the run.

I get what you're saying here, but the lack of strength on our OL means that we often need two (or more) tries to get one yard. Also, anything where the defense can key on collapsing the interior of the OL has very bad results: 3rd and 1, 4th and 1, 3rd or 4th and long, etc. We're just too weak there, partly due to scheme.

The safest bet in all of sports was that if the Vikings threw an incompletion on first down, the second down play would be a run.

Re: Kirk On the Trading Block

"I love the scheme that we're running offensively, I love the wide zone offense, I love the play-action passes," Zimmer said in January. "All those things. A coach told me one time that your offense should be what your quarterback is best at. And that's what I feel Kirk [Cousins] is best at. Those kind of things are what makes him really good. So to me, that is really important."

So, in spite of the fact that some huge media figure with great sourcing chirped out that Kirk is as good as ensconced as the 49ers QB, maybe Zimmer, while admittedly poorly positioned to understand even remotely the Vikings' current thinking regarding their franchise QB to whom they've given ocean liners full of money, is, possibly, on to something here.

Or maybe not, and we can continue to pretend that the Vikings are on the verge of admitting they've been completely wrong about everything.

Let's face it: Spielman, Zimmer, and the Wilfs think they've been doing a great job. It's the players and injuries/health that kept them from hoisting the Lombardi last night.....

Will I be the only one not watching the Super Bowl? I might take a peek at it, though.

I assume you have other things going on. Why wouldn't I want to see what the two best teams in the NFL try to do in the biggest game in all of sports?

It hurts too much. If the Vikings had won just one Super Bowl I could feel differently

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/8/2021 12:16:14 PM)

I'm not inspired by the announcement of Kubiak becoming the new offensive coordinator, but I imagine with the son you get the dad who will be consulting and mentoring. In the end, we will have to wait and see that it was a good choice or not. I agree that continuity is helpful, especially in a Covid world where practices are limited.

I think the nepotism / recycling of coaches is the biggest obstacle for minority candidates.

One they get a HC job they really need to put lots of minority coaches under them.

Not sure about that...it seems there is over rated coaches and those that do a really good job. I would hire Leftwich right now. Won Super Bowl as Pittsburgh backup QB and now as an OC---fairly young at 41 also.

Joseph, Bowles, and Lynn don't seem to have HC material. Same can be said about a ton of HC right now....DC or OC is their limit.

Yeah, so once someone gets a chance and doesn't set the world on fire, NO MORE CHANCES!!!!!! That goes for you Bill Belicheck, and you Andy Reid, and you Bill Parcells, and you Don Shula, and you Mike Shanahan, and you Vince Lombardi.

But definitely if you're black and don't win a Super Bowl in your first stint, fukk off forever!!!!!!!

Not saying they shouldn't get their 2nd chance....I would pick Leftwich out of that bunch now.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/8/2021 10:12:30 PM)

The Chiefs earned a 42.2 team pass blocking grade in the Super Bowl per PFF, their lowest since Week 14 of 2010

For comparison the Vikings earned a team pass block grade below 42 three times just in the last year.

(Nick Olson on Twitter)

Still want to blame Kirk for the losing season?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/8/2021 11:53:05 PM)

Yes, Kurt isn't clutch, and his play makes his OL look like he is Mahomes with a concussion going against TBs defense often.

Cousins having 2 GREAT targets, shouldn't be compared to Mahomes who just has one. That is a testament to Mahomes' greaat play. Add Jefferson to the Chiefs, and it may have been a close game, keying on Hill may not have worked.

Stick Brady on the Vikings, and with accurate smart passes thrown quickly, that OL would have suddenly looked decent.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/8/2021 11:58:12 PM)

Getting Watson or Lawrence is not tinfoil idea, it's a GOOD idea.

I was told getting Sheldon Richardson was a Playstation idea, and a few weeks later, the Vikings signed him.

A better OL is not going to help Kirk Cousins
win a SB, you have to get a QB that can lead, can get rid of the ball quickly and accurately, or has some mobility.

If KC just had a great TE or something to go along with Hill, then maybe...

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/9/2021 12:06:01 AM)

Is that TE really that great, or is it Mahomes opening things up for him.

Stick Conklin on the Chiefs, backing up Kelsey, and the dropoff might not be enormous, should Kelce get injured. It starts with the QB.

TB had the LBers to take away Kelce, but had Mahomes had a target like Jefferson or Thielen to go with Hill, it may have been a close game, even with the concussed Mahomes.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/9/2021 12:09:34 AM)

Kelce: 105 receptions, 1400 yards, 11 TDs.

Made the Pro Bowl 3x and first Team All-Pro before Mahomes.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/9/2021 12:13:24 AM)

When you don't have much for WRs, the TE benefits with more balls thrown his way.

They have one quick WR that lacks size, and TB keyed on him, and shutdown the Chief's offense.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/9/2021 12:20:00 AM)

Tampa Bay’s WRs combined for 62 yards.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (2/9/2021 12:20:15 AM)

Alex Smith can get you nice regular season numbers, just like Kirk.

So Kelce got some nice regular season numbers with Smith, but went nowhere in the playoffs, just like Kirk. Get a better QB, and you can go further.

Get Watson or Lawrence.
