I would add that a third or fourth round pick on guard is just fine. Use round 1 on defense.

Yes, hopefully another Samia, Elflein, Clemmings or Beavers will, uh, fall into our lap.

Or a joe Thuney or graham glasgow. You never know.

The definition of insanity is ... oh never mind.

I hope we find a way to pick up a 2nd rd pick for an OL since that seems to be our 'sweetspot' during Spielman's GMship. (if Cleveland holds up)

PLUS another in the 3rd or 4th rd in a desperate gamble to break the 3rd / 4th rd cycle of draft shame. For development purposes.

Not in prayer for a Thuney or Glasgow.

1st
Kalil, Bradbury

2nd
O'Neal, Cleveland

3rd
Elflein (oof!)

4th
Beavers, Clemmings, Samia (OOF!)

I actually loved the Kalil pick....his injuries..uugh. There are going to be misses and injuries. Keep drafting (like they should be doing at QB).

I agree on all counts.

I'm not advocating for not picking OL in the middle rds ... I begged for it at the end of the third / top of the fourth last draft. Pour more resources into the OL, not less. Not with alot of expectation after the 2nd but keep at it. A middle rd QB every couple of years should be mandatory regardless of our starting situation.

And yes the Kalil pick was a good pick / draft maneuver at the time.

Later than 3-4 would have been more appropriate.

Its right there with waiting for Spielman to cast a Thuney Glasgow starter spell in the 3-4 rd.

I think he was simply piggybacking on YOU essentially calling round 2 the magic round, although your actual words were "sweet spot".

Thank you. I absolutely grasped that.

Call it magic. Call it blind luck. Call it doing a better job of scouting borderline first rd players than dipping into the middle rd OL talent glut. Call it better drafting in the 2nd rd than the 3rd or 4th rds (which seems likely).

It just is what it is the last couple of years.

Maybe a Shaq Mason or Larry Warford spell would do?

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/11/2021 2:11:22 PM)

2nd rounders since 2015:
Kendricks
Alexander
Cook
O'Neill
Smith
Cleveland

No 2nd rounders in 2012, 2013, 2014 which were also the first three years of RS as GM.

Rudolph in 2011. Two-pick Toby was one of two 2nd rounders in 2010.

I have a lot of hope for last year's 3rd / 4th rounders. I will have a lot of hope for this year's, regardless of position.

However, if we sail into the draft without giving the IOL SOME fa attention, and all we do is add a middle rd guard ... my expectations for IOL will be fairly low.

Even if my hopefulness after the draft is an over-inflated Weenie dog balloon thing, as it always is.

The Spielman GM reign (2012) ... starters in bold.

1st
Jefferson, Gladney, Bradbury, Hughes (I), Treadwell, Waynes, Barr, Bridgewater, Floyd (I), Rhodes, Patterson, Kalil, Smith

2nd
Cleveland, Smith, O'Neil, Cook, Alexander, Kendricks

3rd
Dantzler, Mattison, Elflein, Hunter, Crichton, McKinnon, Robinson

4th
Wonnum, Lynch, Dye, Samia, Holmes, Johnson, Gedeon, Beavers, Clemmings, Hodges, Wright, Ellison

I suppose Alexander and Gladney should be considered starters ... not sure the slot counts or how Gladney will end up, etc. Smith will probably be the starter at TE, we'll see.

(sorry, this should all be in draft thread)

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/12/2021 7:29:17 PM)

I looked to find something to share on Twitter and I really couldn't find anything worth sharing. Very slow day. Things should pick up on Monday. It's the beginning of "legal tampering". Ha! As if that doesn't already go on. Plus, some players can legally negotiate today. But teams like Green Bay were trying to massage contracts to get under the cap. The Vikings must be trying to do that still.

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2021 8:04:14 AM)

I see a handful of guys around the league restructuring their contracts in order to free up cap space. Being as it seems inevitable that Cousins will be our quarterback for another year or two, does anyone see a way to restructure his deal to free up space for the Vikings? Mahomes restructured in Kansas City and it freed up $17-million. Three guys restructured in Chicago and it created $23-million in cap space.

Probably not without adding more years of guaranteed money. Which we don't want to do imo.

You can add a voidable year to spread the hit out. I don't know if requires player consent, probably? Brady just did it. NO did it the last couple years for Brees. Easy to do with Mahomes 1.7M add to the rest of the contract is pretty much nothing.

It might actually a good idea under these circumstances. Create 12M or so in cap space and kick it to 2022 when cap goes up (new TV money) and we are in great cap shape (last time I checked).

As long as the Vikings are in charge of the voidable year.

I think the Vikings should look into trading Mattison and re-signing Boone if they can get a mid-round pick for him. We have depth at RB and every bit of cap savings is worthwhile.

You don't trade one of your most explosive players.

We just need to not run him into the ground. Improve OLine and he could be dynamic for the whole year, not just the first 10 games.

Cousins restructured last year and it cost us more this year. Mahomes and Brady both restructured but at no cost to their pocket book.
