TJSweens -> Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/29/2021 2:56:58 PM)

Expansion draft
Zach
Two first round picks
...

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/29/2021 8:36:26 PM)

Ouch, that sounds harsh.
But if we dump all of his contract and both picks are the 2 we have this year I take it.
It will be like ripping off the band aid fast and being done with it.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/29/2021 10:24:26 PM)

Here is the problem. Zach's contract has the potential to bite us in the ass even worse if we trade him. The last four years of his contract are the ones where his salary is lower than his cap hit. The remaining years go $6M, $2M, $1M, $1M. Over the last four years The Wild spend a combined $20 million less than Zach's cap hit. If they trade Parise this off season, that $20 million figure is frozen with the league office. What that means is that if Parise retires at any point before his contract is finished, the Wild will be assessed that $20M cap hit divided among the remaining years of the contract. If Parise retired after two years because he would only be making $1M anyway, the Wild would take a $10M hit each of those last two years. That gets even worse when you consider the Wild would likely have to accept a bad contract in return for Parise. If the Wild trade Parise, we better hope he plays out the remaining 4 years.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/29/2021 10:45:21 PM)

The maneuvering ahead of the expansion draft should be interesting. Each team protects 7 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goalie. Unless Guerin can convince Suter to waive his NMC, Guerin will have to scramble to trade Dumba. Suter, Spurgeon and Brodin all have NMC's. The Wild can trade Dumba or lose him in the draft.

Also worth noting is that Talbot would likely be unprotected as well. The Wild aren't going to expose their 24 year old goalie of the future.

Or, they can protect eight skaters overall and a goalie.
Any way you look at it, we will lose a good player. Just have to accept that and move on.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/30/2021 9:27:12 AM)

I am curious if Suter and Parise are team first enough to waive their NMC's since neither is likely to be targeted by Seattle. If they both did, it would make the expansion draft much less of a problem.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/30/2021 10:32:08 AM)

All the Wild really need is for Suter to waive his NTC. That will enable them to protect Dumba. They don't stand to lose anyone significant out of the forwards. My guess is that in the end, they will probably lose Soucy.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/30/2021 10:35:08 AM)

OTOH, I could see Suter being taken if he is unprotected. His cap hit is 7.5 million, but he only due a total of $10 million over the last 4 years of the deal.

This would also force the Wild to trade Dumba, which most of us would like.

He will play for $1 million. He wants to get to the HOF.

The league is not gonna allow shenanigans like that. It's undermining the integrity of the league.

7-3-1 gives Guerin a lot more ability to dictate who he will lose. I really expect him to try to move Dumba as Addison looks like he is ready to step into that right hand shot offensive defenseman role.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/31/2021 8:15:50 AM)

I hope Guerin can find a way to move Dumba now, rather than just losing him to the Kracken for nothing.
Agreed that Addison looks good, so we won't miss Dumba as much as some think.
Going to be a real interesting summer for the Wild. We showed we have a few pieces in place this season, now Guerin needs to find a way to build around them.
I'm hoping he can find us at least one quality center without breaking the bank or giving up numerous high round draft picks.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (5/31/2021 9:31:56 AM)

Luckily, Dumba boosted his value this year. He could get us a top 6 center. Even without the expansion draft, it's time to move one of the top 4 defensemen. They have a lot of cap space tied up in those 4 players.

How bad would this be for the cap?

A buyout would be a disaster. According to CapFriendly.com, a Parise buyout would give the Wild a cap hit of

2021/22 - $2,371,794
2022/23 - $6,371,794
2023/24 - $7,371,794
2024/25 - $7,371,794
2025/29 - $833,333 annually.

That's an 8 year cap hit with 2 of the years being almost as big of a cap hit as him playing and a 3rd year at only about $1M in savings.

So a trade more likely...

Trade and hope that Parise plays out his contract. Retiring a year or two after a trade would be the biggest disaster of all for the Wild. Parise could be more attractive to a trade partner than we think. Even though he has a 7.5M cap hit, he is only due $10M in salary spread out over the last 4 years of his deal. His playoff performance could persuade another team that he is still a good player who needs a fresh start.

I think it's best if we just make nice with Zach and find a way to co-exist for 4 more years.
He can still help this team, just not in the same capacity as he has in the past.
That way he can go out in his home town with his buddy Suter just the way they pictured it when they signed.
They may not play the significant roles they wanted, but they may even go out bringing a Cup to Minnesota if all goes well.

Wow, I just went back and re-read that.....I guess I can take my Wild colored sunglasses off now. [sm=shades.gif]

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/1/2021 3:41:09 PM)

It depends of if Evason and Parise can bury the hatchet. Evason took it too far in his efforts to put Parise in his place. I appreciate that Dean decided the days of Parise and Suter calling the shots is over. I just think he went overboard where Parise was concerned. Sitting him for the first 3 games of the playoffs was not smart.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/2/2021 10:19:01 AM)

I just found out that LV is exempt from the expansion draft. What a bunch of bullshit. Bettman, you brainless f*ck!

Lynn G. -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/2/2021 10:49:33 AM)

You've got to be kidding me. Should we all donate a pack of diapers to them?

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/2/2021 2:28:57 PM)

Yeap. They mentioned it the other day during the broadcast of the game. Total BS.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/2/2021 4:51:15 PM)

I believe they also didn't get a share of the $650 million expansion fee Seattle paid to join the league.
I say too bad.....make them lose a good player just like everybody else.

kgdabom -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/3/2021 2:44:06 PM)

I found a mock expansion draft on Hockey News

https://www.si.com/hockey/the-hockey-news/seattle-mock-expansion-draft-2-shuffle-the-deck

with the Wild losing

Carson Soucy, Wild
Contract: $2.75M to 2023 (UFA)

A big frame and a long reach and not a zero on offense. Third pair.

Would that be an acceptable result?

kgdabom -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/4/2021 1:32:40 AM)

Did the draft lottery have any positives or negatives for the Wild?
