So you like Ek better than Fiala?

Oh God yes. It's not even close in my opinion. Fiala is a very talented, but streaky offensive wing. Ericksson Ek is turning into one of the best two way centers in the NHL. Ekker never takes a bad shift. Fiala can dominate for a few games and then disappear for several games.

I only ask because I have them grouped together.

Absolutely no question that Fiala is an incredible natural talent. Inconsistency has been the knock on him his whole career. We never could have gotten him for just Granlund if it wasn't for that.

My preference is someone who isn't a sniper as we only have a couple....big decision to trade away one.

Very true, but I go back to my previous statement...A bonified #1 center is the rarest of the rare in the NHL. You pay the price to get one.

One big issue is that the Wild have to send a lot salary out the door in any deal for Eichel or at least make a separate deal that does so. Eichel is under contract for $10M a year. Kirilloff is about to get a contract that will be close to Eichel's. Dumbo alone will send $6M out the door. Fiala is an arbitration eligible RFA who is coming off a year in which he made $3M.

Put those two together with one of our first round picks this year and next year's first round pick could get a deal done. And again, I don' know how you do it, but there needs to be some level of protection against Eichel's health.

I could live with that kind of deal as long our medical staff gets to give a full check up first and clears him 100%. If they won't give our medical team full access before any deal is finalized there is a huge red flag. We need a legit #1 center more than we need Fiala in my opinion.

I could live with that too,
Agree on Fiala, Dumba as well: consistantly inconsistant is the name of their games.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 7:00:41 AM)

I saw this quote in the comments section of Russo's latest story in the Athletic.
"Eichel. He's what my old coach called a Wizard of Oz player. His game lacks brain, heart and/or courage for long enough stretches that I don't want to see us blow one-eighth of our salary pool hoping his game finally clicks here."
Has anybody actually watched enough of his game to know if there is any truth to the "Wizard of Oz" comment? I know I have seen very little of his game.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 9:41:16 AM)

That runs contrary to literally every scouting report on Eichel.

kevinemmer -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 10:47:22 AM)

Yikes!
That’s a scary assessment.
I’ve never seen him play…

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 11:22:29 AM)

Remember to take that assessment with a grain of salt. It was from the comments section by some unknown person on the internet....
I've never heard anything like that about him before this so it is probably nothing, but I've never seen him play either so I had to ask.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 11:45:24 AM)

From the draft analyst website

Arguably the most complete player among his peers, Eichel is a unique blend of power and finesse with a thorough understanding of the game. His arsenal of skills, however, is not the sole reason for his high standing. He is a born leader with a tremendous desire to succeed and leads by example.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 11:51:27 AM)

From elite prospects

When Jack Eichel is on the ice, the pace of the play shifts; if players can't keep up, they are left behind. A consistent scoring threat on the ice, Eichel possesses next-level hockey-IQ, an elite-level skillset, and the natural size and work ethic to let him play his role as a scoring power center. All-in-all, Jack Eichel is that uncontainable, dynamic center that can make other players look out of place in his wake.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/19/2021 11:58:22 AM)

I can't claim that I have seen Eichel play a lot, but what I have seen is nothing like what what the guy commenting on Russo's page described.

Thanks!
I tend to believe those guys from reputable draft analysis sites more than internet trolls. [:D]

I agree about sending Fiala rather than JEE. No proof what so ever but I see a sorta-nasty negotiation coming. I get the feeling he wants to be the #1 and not 1-b and he won’t leapfrog KK at this point.

It's looking like Billy has his work cut out for him with KK and Fiala negotiations becoming possibly tricky, as Russo put it.
I hope he gets Ekker signed to a long term deal first and then on to KK.....with Fiala taking a back seat to both.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/20/2021 11:39:04 AM)

I heard on Russo radio this morning that Eichel has yet to have the needed surgery that will require a 3 month rehab time period. The longer he puts it off the more likely he will not be ready to start the season.
Russo also said even if the Wild is willing to part with Dumba and Fiala to make the money work, Buffalo may not want them. They apparently are more interested in futures like Boldy or Rossi and draft picks, which won't allow the Wild to clear the cap space required to take on Eichel's $10 million contract.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/20/2021 6:24:01 PM)

Eichel and Buffalo are fighting over the surgery. Eichel wanted it a long time ago and Buffalo thinks it's not necessary and won't approve it. I'd love to get Eichel, but I'm not giving up Boldy and or Rossi.

bstinger -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/20/2021 11:19:30 PM)

As good as he'd be, I'd really have to deny if he still needs surgery.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (6/21/2021 10:26:36 AM)

It looks like we have more pressing needs than than getting Eichel. Kaprizov's representation is reportedly playing games on his contract. There are reports that his agent has had talks with a KHL team that would involve him being able to play in the Olympics. The assumption is that he is just using the only leverage at his disposal to get the most he can out of the Wild.

Russo also added this nugget

The Wild want to sign the soon-to-be rookie of the year to a seven- or eight-year contract that would assuredly make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. It would also buy out four or five years of Kaprizov’s unrestricted free agency rights. Kaprizov’s camp, on the other hand, is looking for not just shorter term, but it sure sounds like they’re looking for a two- or three-year bridge deal.

If this is true, it means Kaprizov is most interested in the shortest route to unrestricted free agency. Or maybe, it's just to push the Wild into offering Eichel kind of money.

We just can't have nice things.

No pressure on Guerin at all...uugh.

Wild assistant GM Tom Kurvers dies at age 58
The former Bloomington Jefferson and UMD standout won the Hobey Baker Award in 1984.

By Jana Hollingsworth and Chris Miller Star Tribune

Tom Kurvers, a Wild assistant general manager who won the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's top player in 1984 for Minnesota Duluth, passed away Monday because of cancer. He was 58.

Kurvers was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, early in 2019. The cancer spread and he was away from the Wild for most of last season.

A Bloomington native, Kurvers spent 11 seasons as a defenseman in the NHL, winning a Stanley Cup in 1986, before starting a front office career.

After skating for Bloomington Jefferson's first high school hockey state tournament team in 1980, Kurvers played at UMD as the program rose to prominence in the early 1980s under coach Mike Sertich. He won the Hobey Baker in 1984 after leading the Bulldogs to the national title game — they were beaten by Bowling Green in four overtimes — with 18 goals, 58 assists and 76 points in 43 games. Also the WCHA player of the year and an All-America, he finished his college career with 192 points in 124 games.

"He was certainly gifted, but everybody knew about his work ethic, his ability to reach outside himself to help younger players and lead the older players," Sertich said. "He had total respect in the room, from players to coaches to support staff.

"He led by example and had great values, and he lived those on and off the ice."

Sertich, 74, last spoke with Kurvers two weeks ago. The level of hockey Kurvers played during his time at UMD helped "put us on the national map," Sertich said.

Kurvers played for Montreal, Buffalo, New Jersey, Toronto, Vancouver, Anaheim and the New York Islanders during his NHL career. Noted as a power-play specialist, he had 93 goals and 328 assists in 659 NHL games.

He played a final season in Japan before working for the Coyotes, first as an assistant coach, then eventually becoming Arizona's director of player personnel. He was interim general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2010, and stayed with the Lightning as a senior advisor until 2018 when he was hired as Wild assistant GM by Paul Fenton. He was interim GM for a two months after Fenton was fired in June, 2019, until Bill Guerin was hired.

"Tom's passion for and success in hockey could only be surpassed by the love and optimism he shared with his family and friends each and every day," the Wild said in a statement. "We join the State of Hockey in mourning the loss of a great hockey player and an even better person."

Kurvers is survived by his wife, Heather, and four children.

Another reason to click ahead to the 28 minute is that you avoid Anthony LaPanta. Guerin comes in at 28:30 followed by an hour with Michiletti.
