Bill Guerin was on Russo Radio a few days back. Here is a link to the broadcast. Guerin comes on about 28 minutes in.

https://www.iheart.com/podcast/139-paul-allen-kfan-fm-1003-26980875/episode/92noon-russo-radio-lapantasmithguerinwalshfriedman-83989831/

Russo filled in for PA that day and from what I had time to listen to there was a lot of good stuff.

Another reason to click ahead to the 28 minute is that you avoid Anthony LaPanta. Guerin comes in at 28:30 followed by an hour with Michiletti. Usually I have PA on the car radio for back ground noise since that's all he is good for, but had to actually listen when Russo was on.

Ha, lucky for me I missed LaPather and caught the last part with Guerin and most of Michiletti and Freidman.

I just know we're gonna lose Dumba in the expansion draft.[X(][X(]

twinsfan -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/1/2021 3:23:31 PM)

I've always liked Dumba. Reminds me of a modern-day Dave Babych.

The latest from Russo:

The Minnesota Wild have re-signed center Joel Eriksson Ek to an eight-year, $42 million contract, the team announced Friday.

The deal has an average annual value of $5.25 million. Eriksson Ek, who was set to be a restricted free agent, will have a modified, 10-team no-trade clause starting in the fourth year of the deal, a source told The Athletic's Michael Russo.

The eight-year term is the third-longest in franchise history behind Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, who each inked 13-year contracts.

Eriksson Ek, 24, posted a career-high 19 goals and added 11 assists (30 points) in 56 games this season while finishing fourth in voting for the Selke Trophy, given to the league's best defensive forward.

The 24-year-old has been with Minnesota for his entire five-year career, with 43 goals and 53 assists since being drafted No. 20 in 2015. He was drafted 20th overall by the Wild in 2015.

Why the Wild prioritized extending Eriksson Ek
Michael Russo, Wild senior writer: The Wild turned their attention to getting Eriksson Ek re-signed after it became apparent that the Kirill Kaprizov deal would not be quick and simple. While general manager Bill Guerin said the Kaprizov talks have not “gone cold,” as was speculated, the negotiations haven’t gone as smoothly as Guerin would have hoped.

What must he do to justify the deal?
Russo: On a team that lacks center depth, Eriksson Ek is the Wild’s best center by far. He has been developing into one of the sport’s top shutdown centermen for the past few years, but last season, he began to finish and scored a career-high 19 goals.

Eriksson Ek is a relentless forechecker, hard worker and perennially the player that comes to training camp in the best shape. Guerin wants players who want to “be here,” and clearly Eriksson Ek showed that commitment with this deal.

If he continues as one of the league’s best defensive forwards but complements that with a continued willingness to drive the net and produce, this will be a below-market value contract once Eriksson Ek gets deep into it.

Minnesota's other top offseason priorities
Russo: Getting Kaprizov signed remains the top priority. It’s believed Guerin’s made lucrative contract offers of seven and eight years that would make Kaprizov the highest-paid player per year in franchise history. However, so far, it’s believed Kaprizov is seeking a short-term deal, something Guerin doesn’t want to entertain since Kaprizov could become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

The Wild are also trying to re-sign Kevin Fiala, but that negotiation is also not expected to be easy, and he could be dangled in trade talks this offseason.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/2/2021 9:07:19 PM)

That's good news. One of the two most important contracts is settled.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/3/2021 6:41:17 AM)

I cringe at no trade clauses, but it appears they are here to stay in some form. I guess the good thing about this contract is in 4 years when the clause kicks in his $5.25 million will look like a bargain price and he will be in his prime at that time.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/3/2021 7:54:15 AM)

The contract also pays Ek through his prime. He will be 32 when it ends instead of 42 like Parise and Suter.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/3/2021 8:04:43 AM)

Yup, I like the deal for sure. Now we need to get KK signed for at least 4-5 years to get us past the Parise/Suter money so we can afford his big payday.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/3/2021 10:25:14 AM)

yeap. no issue with this one at all.

Yep
Happy for Wild and Ekker,
Now get Special K signed and we’re loving life as Wild fans.
Happy 4th everyone!!

Phil Riewer -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/5/2021 4:39:10 PM)

Nick Bjugstad won't reach unrestricted free agency.

#mnwild  have re-signed the 28-year-old center/right wing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

Handy and versatile last season, Bjugstad scored six goals and 17 points in 44 games for his home-state Wild.

stfrank -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/5/2021 5:47:59 PM)

A good home-town discount for a solid bottom six forward that wants to stay at home at this stage of his career.
I like it.

bstinger -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/6/2021 10:45:26 AM)

Some good news. Need KK and Fiala on board too, plus some more help at C. Replace Rask.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:22:21 AM)

SoMyFriend texted me that Russo is saying that the Wild are about to buy out both Suter and Parise.

YES! Beat Kevin by a full 7 seconds!

Lynn G. -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:25:01 AM)

We're definitely going younger. As much as I like both Suter and Parise, I think it's the right decision.

LOL!

Guerin ain't messing around.

kevinemmer -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:34:17 AM)

Kirill and Eichel??

That would be something.

Idle spec on my part (about Eichel).

Surgery is tough part...

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:38:39 AM)

This solves a lot of issues. In the near term, it opens up cap space for signing Kaprizov and Fiala, but keep in mind that both of them will count against the cap for 8 years now, although at a lower number. They can now protect every non-goalie that they want to keep in the expansion draft without making a terrible trade to do it. My guess is that Calen Addison will be skating in a regular defensive shift next year.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:44:07 AM)

Kaprizov is its own issue though. His new agent is trying to engineer the same scenario he got for another high profile client, who's name I can't remember. He initially negotiated a bridge deal to take him to free agency and then negotiated an $11.5M per year extension off of that contract. He knows if Kaprizov signs for 8 years now, his next contract will be when he is 32. There is much more leverage for his next deal if he is 26.

TJSweens -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:50:07 AM)

Artemi Panarin is the player I was trying to think of. He is represented by the same agent as Kaprizov and makes 11.6+ million a year.

bstinger -> RE: Wild 2021 Post Mortem Offseason and Draft (7/13/2021 11:56:20 AM)

Wow, not surprised with Parise, but a little surprised they didn't give Suter at least another year.

Kinda wondered the same.

Agree Addison looks ready.
