Bears at Vikings: My team is about to go coach shopping (God willing) which means I get to draw up a wishlist for what I want in a new leader. This is what makes coach shopping so fun! Let’s begin.

Is not 97 years old
Is primarily an offensive coach
But also cares about defense too!
Never mismanages the clock, ever
Makes actual, effective in-game adjustments
Knows how to work with quarterbacks instead of actively despising them on principle
Will care enough about special teams that I won’t have a reason to audibly groan at least twice a game
Never punts
Never opts for a field goal unless it’s fourth-and-32
Never coached in college and, in fact, looks upon college coaching with incredible disdain
Won’t hire his goddamn kid to run half the team
Occasionally says something in the presser where you’re like “Holy shit this guy seems like a thoughtful person and not a steakhead cop.”
Is relatively handsome compared to his peers

That’s it. That’s the list. Byron Leftwich, is what I’m really saying. Can’t wait for my team to blow him off and hire a Pats assistant who ticks off exactly none of those boxes instead.

For those who want Kirk gone next year, just know replacing a top 12 QB is not easy, and you very well may end up wasting a year or 2 of JJ, the back end of Thielen's prime, and Dalvin. Easy to get rid of a QB,not easy to upgrade. #Skol

I totally agree.

I will be shocked - if by deciding to move on from KC this year - the team finds a good replacement right out of the gate.

I don't think its likely to happen and that has to be factored into any decision to move on from KC.

But ... enough is enough ... hopefully we are focused on a long term answer with a higher ceiling than just more of the same in 2022.

I'd trade Cousins for a top 12 QB in a heart beat, Kyle. Heck I'd trade him for a top 15 QB.

And we'd save cap space for another player or two also, no brainer.

I tend to agree, get an offensive coach and see what happens in 2022. If that doesn't work clean house and trade up as high as possible for a top QB. When I say clean house I would but anybody and everybody up for trade because if you don't have a QB, you got nothing.

None have won with different teams

ALL the HCs that have won multiple SBs, did them with different teams. TB, this season, was the 1st team to bring back all it's players, but will have to do it without Antonio Brown.

Agreed. Everyone knows what Kirk is. If a GM is too scared to make changes because things might not work out as planned then he needs a different job. Teams that play scared almost always end up losing, as do the organizations that put those teams on the field.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 4:59:20 PM)

Right now, how many SB winning HCs are coaching a team that didn't win the SB for them ?

Dallas in the playoffs, any others out there ?

Im not Kirk's uncle or anything like that ... Kyle expressed how I feel exactly.

I'm in win now mode from here on out - running out of time and enthusiasm ... that'll happen when you get a little older and priorities in life change

Minshew is under contract for next year. Fangio is still the Denver coach. Am I missing something in all of these "simple" solutions?

Minshew is a backup QB under contract for one year at a cost of less than $1m dollars. Easy trade for a late round pick. Word out of Denver is that Fangio is going to be fired next week. Couldn't get much simpler.

The only things that need to happen are:

The head coach and coaching staff need to get fired and the new head coach - not our fan base - would have to be interested in hiring Fangio and Fangio would have to want to coach our pathetic defense with no money to shore it up.

The GM would have to be fired as well because he would never draft, trade for or sign a decent back-up QB that can do more than hold a clipboard and the Eagles would have to have lost faith in Minshew to move on and find another good backup QB situation.

Doesn't hurt to dream though.

Yes. I am assuming that both Zimmer and Spielman get fired, or at the very least Spielman gets moved into a different role where he's no longer making personnel decisions. Fangio would be interested in coaching the Vikings if he gets paid, just like every athlete, and every coach in sports. Money is always king. Backup QB's are backups for a reason. A late round draft pick would easily pry him away from the Eagles. And if not Minshew, then grab Fitzmagic. At least the team would be fun to watch next year.

My dream is to get rid of Zimmer and Spielman. Whatever happens after that I can live with - other than Cousins getting an extension...

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 5:10:54 PM)

Looking at the last 20 years, SB winning HCs stay with their teams, you're lucky if one is available.

We're lucky Pederson is available, will there be any others ?

The Happy Norseman -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 5:16:06 PM)

Vikings ownership has been meeting on the direction of its football operation, and there’s a feeling that these will likely be Mike Zimmer’s final days in Minnesota. The fate of GM Rick Spielman is less certain, but there is an expectation among those in the industry that he’ll remain in some capacity (whether it’s his current one, or in an elevated executive role with input on picking his replacement). If Zimmer is out, the Vikings are another team expected to cast a wide net in their coaching search. Zimmer, for his part, could well land back in Dallas if he’s let go and Quinn lands a head coaching job somewhere. The Joneses have a strong relationship with, and respect for, Zimmer, to the point where had the Vikings pulled the plug on him earlier, he’d have been a leading candidate to replace Jason Garrett in Dallas. - Albert Breer

Nate -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 5:23:36 PM)

The only way I can rationalize a Cousins extension is that they are making him more cap friendly for a trade, either this year or next. They need a back-up plan before trading him if we want to keep JJ around though. Some kind of serviceable back-up vet with Mond and/or draft pick QB. Under improved leadership I could stand another year of KFC if we don't have better options but 3 years would be gross without a Superbowl defense like Baltimore had.

On the Harbaugh front, he has some good and bad, just like many coaches out there. I could support it but that's not my preferred option. After living through Frazier, Childress and Zimmer, I'd welcome anyone youthful with an innovative mind that has a good rapport with players and the office. I've had enough of all the hard headed, non-adapting, irritable, nepotistic, under the bus throwing types. Find someone who has the energy and passion to lead and not "manage" the team. Maybe that's Pederson with good coordinators, or Leftwich, Moore, Bienemy. I really liked the article posted about the Saints and Charger hires, that's some refreshing thinking at least. Dinosaurs need to stay extinct.

joejitsu -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 5:48:02 PM)

I’m for getting Pederson in here. He is a pass first, beat up the clock on offense type of coach.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 7:06:16 PM)

I wonder how much the prospective coach's opinion of whether he wants Cousins or not as his QB will matter in the interview process?

Dana Turner -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/7/2022 7:33:19 PM)

I am not a huge Cousins fan, but I recognize that he was not the reason this team sucked so many times this year. He had a couple forgettable games, most QB's do, but there are many worse positions on this team that kept us from being a contender. This defense was brutal!

There are many teams out there that would gladly give us a second or third for him, (I can't see getting a first with his contract), but we would spend a long time trying to find a top 10-12 guy like he is. Stay the course, continue the O-line rebuild and focus the rest of the draft on the defense!

Well you got me there. In SB 9, Chuck Noll won with the 1974 Steelers, in SB 10, he won with the 1975 Steelers. [&o]

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2022 7:55:26 AM)

There's a pretty long grocery list on what's wrong with Cousins. But it is true that most of the losses this season fall on Zimmer. His play not to lose and those soft prevent defenses at the end of each half speak volumes about his coaching ability, or should I say lack thereof.

Multiple records of ineptitude were broken this season. Such as, points given up in the last 2 minutes of each half. Losing games when your opponent had 4 turnovers ect...

Cousins isn't without blame either, he doesn't lead and makes poor reads at the most inopportune times. 3rd and goal and you throw a checkdown to a well covered Osborn. Chucking the ball 20 yards oob's on a hail mary. Not willing to call TO's or audible. There are things upstairs in Cousins head that are simply unfixable.

Some were just one upping records of futility from 2020's campaign.

I SMH when I read about Zimmer immediately landing another HC job. He went forever without getting a look and proved the gig is above his skill set.

Comparing Zimmer to Doug Pederson and how aggressive Pederson had to be to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

2nd quarter, 4th and goal at the 1 with a 3-point lead, pretty sure Zimmer attempts a field goal.

Meanwhile, Pederson calls the Philly Special, described by NFL Films as "a play that the Eagles had never called before, run on 4th down by an undrafted rookie running back pitching the football to a third-string tight end who had never attempted an NFL pass before, throwing to a backup quarterback who had never caught an NFL (or college) pass before, [pulled off] on the biggest stage for football."

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2022 9:23:09 AM)

Zimmer gone Sunday /early next week will make the postseason a lot less excruciating, and the coaching search will be a lot more interesting to speculate on

than just chewing on and regurgitating KC pabulum for the next two months.

In other words, the next two or three days are super-extra-critical to the collective mental health of the fan base for years to come.

Cousins and Spielman .... whatever. Dam them but they might be survivable.

There's no way Zimmer won't be fired, right?

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2022 9:27:06 AM)

I believe the report coming into the season that it was playoffs or bust for Zimmer and Spielman.

iirc it alluded to a good playoff run but I bet there wouldn't have been changes if we won one game.

I'd bet they're both gone. I'd bet it all Zimmer is.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/8/2022 9:32:37 AM)

I know there's a lot less people frequenting this board, and while I certainly miss some people, it's just so much more comfortable coming here every day.

No flame wars. No personal attacks.

Sure, posts don't come in at a rate that stimulates me to the degree I desire but that's a fair trade off.
