Damn. Cousins might've been a legit target of Indy:

Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter
Houston has declined Indianapolis’ attempt to speak with Deshaun Watson, per source. Houston comfortable trading Watson - just not in the AFC South.

Well, just because has a no trade clause doesn't mean Cousins wouldn't agree to go to Indy...

If we're anything less than solid playoff contenders the next 2 years I will be majorly disappointed.

I don't hate the move. I'll like it fine as long as it's not for nothing.

I think the new atmosphere, attention to detail, and new eyes on things will see us at 10 wins +. Being able to challenge GB for the division and getting deeper into the playoffs than 1 and done will be what these guys hang their hat on.

I'm not all in but this will be a similar but hopefully better than the team I was all in on last year. I'm guardedly optimistic.

And the FA fan dominos begin to fall.

70,000 of you are an owners dream.

Come on man. If we didn't work something out if/when Indy came knocking we're not going to now post contract extension.

As disappointing as it is that we’re stuck with Cousins for two more years, the deal actually makes a lot of sense. First, it gives the team some cap relief this year. Second, O’Connell gets to see if he can do with Kirk what McVay did with Stafford, and third, O’Connell gets to see if Mond is the team’s QBOTF. 2022 is a bad year for QB’s. If Mond looks like he’s the future then great, he sits behind Cousins for 2 years then starts. If he’s not, the Vikings draft a qb in 2023, when the class is supposed to have some great prospects, that guy sits for a year then starts in 2024. Maybe by 2024 the rest of the team will be rebuilt and we’ll be a strong contender with a new winning QB under center.

Agree, thought the same after I calmed down. If we could've got something in a trade I would have went that way, but I see why they did this. A lot of things to fix a we're still over the cap, so they better makes some good moves or keeping Kirk will be all for naught.

Keeping Kirk was all for naught.

Folks, for much of the league free agency started a couple of days ago.

I thought Kirk was going to stick us like Arodg did the Pack 4/200 and 46 million cap next year. Instead Kirk's cap now 31 and 36 next year. Convert Hunters Roster bonus and we have enough to do something before even talking any cuts or any other restructure/trade.

Yeah, 36 million is nothing.

And he's still getting all of his 45 million.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2022 5:59:58 PM)

Last year we supposedly didn't have cap room....we signed two pretty big FA in Tomlinson and Peterson and three smaller ones in Richardson, Woods, and Vigil. That was with 15-18 Million in Cap room after a few restructures.

And look where the D ended up.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2022 6:02:07 PM)

Word is Cleveland offered 2 2nds and Mayfield and were turned down.

I would have taken that, flipped Baker and drafted someone.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2022 6:06:41 PM)

What's amazing is we're going to make this big SB run with $12.5 million (and probably a lot more) in dead cap! And we can count on Cousins to play .500 ball so it's not like there will be any very high draft picks.

In today's reality-based news, we tendered the punter.

I'd have kept Baker and drafted someone.

Let the 3 QBs battle it out, and if Mayfield comes up short, you let him walk after the season.

Actually if Hunter is healthy and they convert his bonus, sign Hicks, cut Pierce and use his money on Peterson or another CB. Then restructure Thielen and Smith for the Scherff...

Fill other needs in draft. Draft a CB in the 1st.

"the Scherff" is going to Jacksonville.

.
.
maybe o'connell can work a minor miracle with cousins and our offense is top five...could happen....

draft a wr and cb with our first two picks - maybe trade back #12 a little for another cb...two cb's, and a top wr....

we still draft a QB in 2023....

If we keep Thielen a WR is not a priority for the first few rounds. CB's and DE's a C or G depending on we get in FA are the top priorities.

I'm thinking we'll need a young, cheap, very good wr in 2023...so, he can work his way up the ladder in 2022....

jefferson is going to want to get paid next year...yes, after three seasons...forget about a 4th season and then a 5th-year option - he is not going for that...now, we can keep the cap hit under control for a couple of seasons, but he's getting a fat signing bonus next year....

i think we need to think ahead and have another young wr under our wing....

plus, we might sell the farm for a 2023 qb....

IMO we already have the young cheap on the rise WRs in house.

we do, and i like osborn and smith-marsette, but i think we need another sexy strong starter on a rookie deal....I'm looking at our 2023 campaign and beyond...need to draft him now....

trade back and pick up another 2nd and go - wr/cb, cb/wr, cb...i saw a mock that had us trade #12 to Pittsburg for #20 and #52 - and drake landon was there at #20 - then we draft two cb's....

keep thielen as #2 in '22, then redo his deal and make him #3...or go osborn/smith-marsette

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2022 6:22:38 PM)

Other teams are signing, we are figuring out how to get under the league mandated cap.

But all is not lost, Pierce says he has big news SOON that could FINALLY allow us to get a 3-4 million under the cap. Then we can start signing the foundation for our "2024 Superbowl"! Just you wait!

If that’s true and we didn’t take it, things are worse than I thought up top. Getting rid of his salary should be priority #1. KOC must love some Kirk!

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2022 6:52:36 PM)

So far ...

Cousins, TY MCGill, the tendered punter, our classy farewell to Dozier, non-competitive bids for COle - Woods, and Pierce writing a suspense novel.

It's probably starting to dawn on Kwesi that the rest of the league is non-collaborative.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/14/2022 7:07:02 PM)

Even if we ditched Cousins contract I'm not sure this regime was going to look to make their mark in the 1st wave of FA.

They've got to get to know thus roster. Who did the old regime keep down and are going to actually be pieces to the puzzle?

Expect value in numbers this year. Wave 3 guys. A few extra picks in the draft. A large UDFA group. Late cuts from other teams.

Then be bigger players next year.

It's hard to love the idea that he was their guy all along. That it would have taken a crazy good deal to move him. At times 1 2nd and that salary dumped was enough for me.

Maybe you’re right, Todd. But it doesn’t take a trained football eye to see that our interior oline is terrible and the defense needs some youth and speed. Both of those things could be improved with Kirk’s cap number. Maybe we can still get some help with the iol, but good names are coming off the board and we’re just spectators to this point.

I DID think of him but couldn't remember how to spell his name. Now if I had seen his jersey on the field, that would be another thing.

Besides, I'm just presenting the news... we really did tender the punter [8|]

Not sure we can even legally tamper with anyone because it seems the contract would be null due to us technically being over the cap the date the contract would be signed.

Like, can a team be $20 million over a few days before and make several big signings while telling the league yeah, yeah we'll be under the cap by your date?

No, a 'getting to know you' phase, which would be a year minimum, should not hamstring ANY regime who has a plan from signing good FAs. Although, by default they will learn about the roster naturally.

Yes, VALUE! That's all we are going to get until action is taken on some difficult personnel decisions.

Nothing is signed. Just agreed upon.

GB probably 17M over when they reached agreement with Campbell.

Maybe its an element of the overall evaluation.

But you can't toss the season away by tinkering with last year's backups on a horrible defense ... there has to be a better plan than that.

And why pay your QB top dollar to experiment in one of his two years under contract?

I didn't expect splashy deals, I did expect us to make some headway at the top of the cap to improve upon our mediocre performers from last year ...

Its way early but better see some decisiveness soon.
