Have we found a quarterback that can run a two-minute offense yet? Wake me up when we do. Otherwise, we are just rearranging the deck furniture on the Titanic.

I am guessing you didn't watch any games last year.

He had a 78.4 QB Rating in the final two minutes of halves and completed just 56.5% of his passes. In short, he was pretty poor, as I have been reporting for two years.

So yes, I did watch the games.

And Cousins improved this year … it may not be a strength but, at least earlier in the year, he came through on some crucial last minute drives … so yes you are wrong. As usual, hand picked stats don’t say it.

The problem in 2022 was not Cousins in the 2 min drill, it was his two out of three 3-and-outs before the final drives. We led the league.

And a defense that coughed up leads repeatedly, at an epic rate in the final two minutes of either half.

This is the quarterback ratings in the final two minutes of halves last season. This was an improvement for Cousins, who was about 30th a year earlier. Outside of Mahomes, you see anybody below Cousins you would like as your starter? Lamar Jackson maybe? I left out a couple of teams where guys didn't start a lot of games.

Rodgers 123.7
Burrow 118.8
Garoppolo 116.4
Stafford 112.6
Wilson 111.2
Prescott 102.5
Mills 99.2
Herbert 94.1
Bridgewater 91.1
Ryan 90.9
Murray 87.7
Heinicke 85.9
Tannehill 85.6
Allen 84.5
Brady 84.4
Wilson 83.7
Lawrence 81.4
Tagovailoa 80.8
Cousins 78.4
Hurts 77.9
Wentz 77.0
Roethlieberger 76.9
Carr 76.4
Goff 76.0
Mac Jones 67.6
Mahomes 66.3
Jackson 62.0
Mayfield 58.5
Daniel Jones 56.3

Its a feeble example. There are better QBs below and worse QBs above. Obviously.

Cousins is NOT a clutch QB but once again you have hemmed yourself into a narrowly staked position that you try and sell as yours.

We got him for at least 1 more year, maybe two.

So, we have to hope that the new coaching staff will improve his game to get to the high level we want.

Everyone can say he is what he is. That might hold true but I think there can be marked improvement when you go from Zimmer(have to run ball, square peg, round hole) to a staff that says "we will run the ball if it is working" but not because we have to.

Dude had a down year. Cousins has rarely been good at a two-minute offense. If Mahomes has another season or three like he just had, then we can be concerned. Other than that I'll consider it an anomaly.

With Cousins, it's just who he is. Much like Mahomes being an anomaly last year, Cousins had an anomaly year in 2018 when he was good in the final two minutes. This is his last five years. 1-in-5 ain't great, people! Not for a guy making that kind of money. In the past five years, he's been in the bottom third of the league in two-minute QB Rating 80% of the time.

2020, 63.7 QB Rating
2019, 73.7 QB Rating
2018, 109.8
2017, 76.3
2016, 64.2

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/15/2022 11:37:32 AM)

Some posters want Vikings to tear down their roster every year. I see we just picked up a guy 4 years younger than the one we replaced.

Coaches still call the plays inside 2 minutes.......but apparently we will just blame Kirk.

Tretter is 31; is he a good 1-2 year signing?

No; not excusing poor play but also including poor coaching.

Stafford hasn't had a decent offensive coach since Caldwell; how did he do (compared to the last few years in Detroit)?

Who has been the great offensive mind and has it been stable with the Vikes since he has been here...or Washington?

Would you consider Jay Gruden, DeFillipo, Stefanski, Gary, or Clint Kubiak great offensive coaches?

Kirk has had 5 coordinators as a starter. I think Shanahan was there his first two years at Wash when he was a backup so he will be on his 7 coordinator.

It's put up or shut up time for KC.

Prove to the fans that it was a toxic coaching staff that held you back.

I like the DT signing. It was tough on the defense that the two #1 picks Gladney and Hughes didn't work out....about reason #5-6 why Zimmer/Spielman are gone (along with Bradbury pick).

2014 Barr/Teddy
2015 Waynes
2016 Treadwell
2017 Pick traded for Bradford
2018 Hughes
2019 Bradbury
2020 Jefferson/Gladney
2021 Darrisaw

1. Everybody and their mother want to improve the roster every year, especially after 7-9 and 8-9.

2. Pierce has played one more season than Phillips. Try again.

3. Players execute plays on the field. Or they don't. That's what we measure. Coaches call plays on a headset.

4. See #3. Nobody has EVER put all the blame on Kirk.

He is 3+ years older.

Pierce: November 6, 1992 (age 29 years)

Phillips: January 25, 1996 (age 26 years)

Yes, I looked it up before posting.

When I realized there was only one season difference ... in my mind, the age difference means little (maybe later but not now).

Age being less relevant than experience. At least in your 20s.

26 vs 36 ... ok. 4 seasons vs 5 seasons ... I'm not buying it (even with one opt-out year making it 4 vs 6, technically).

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/15/2022 4:06:05 PM)

He is younger, took less, played more games, plays hurt, and was rated better.

Pierce could have stayed at 5-6 million but he chose not too...also there is this:

Phillips PFF ranking was 15 (higher than Tomlinson at 17 and Pierce at 25).

Mark Anderson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/15/2022 4:18:23 PM)

FWIW. There is a Chandler Jones rumor out there. Only way that would make any sense is if we are trading Hunter.
