ORIGINAL: ratoppenheimer . Nick Shook of NFL.com put together a list of the best coverage players of the 2021 season based on Next Gen Stats, and Dantzler pops up on the list at #7. Seeing Dantzler here might come as a surprise, but the metrics for him were too good to overlook. He posted a targeted EPA of -18.2 (10th among DBs). Dantzler excelled at limiting yards gained by opposing pass catchers, allowing just 4.9 yards per target in coverage, one of the lowest rates in the NFL. He also tied for the fourth-fewest yards after catch per reception allowed at 2.3. A tight-window percentage of 20.6 just barely nudged him into qualifying for the list, but it allowed for folks like me to realize Dantzler was better in coverage than most realized. Great info. I recently heard that the numbers were very kind to Dantzler. Booth might have to take over for Peterson this year instead of Dantzler. dantzer is going to be better than peterson - no doubt in my mind.... peterson is leadership, experience, lockerroom, confidence builder...coach on the field...and still an okay good player.... our future defensive backfield is bynum, cine, booth, and dantzler - all on the cheap...we can afford the pay a top-five nickel guy and rule roost.... Assuming they all pan out, that secondary of the future seems reasonable. But Smith will be paid as a starter the next two years. By the time his dead cap falls below $10 million, Dantzler will be a UFA with Bynum a UFA the year after. So barring a big chunk of additional dead cap, there is no year where the traditional four starters (2 S, 2 CB) are all on the cheap. However, in this scenario it doesn't look like the secondary will be a big drain on the cap. at this moment, in 2024, we're $131mm under the cap...as long as we don't extend cousins again we're okay.... Different point. Also, Spotrac shows $131 mil under but Overthecap has us only $91 mil under... both with 35 players under contract. 15 of the 35 are in the $1 mil range. 20 of the 35 count less than $1.5 mil against the cap. Several are unknowns... Wright, Stevenson, Sokol... There are about 11 proven players in the 35 to include older Smith and Theilen, and 3 of the 11 (Cousins, Hunter, Tomlinson) are just dead cap guys. So 8 proven, just 6 proven and not real old. No Jefferson, no Cleveland, no Kendricks, etc. Seems low but I don't know how that fares with other teams. Maybe it's a sign of our changing of the guard. Either way, 90 or 131 in cap doesn't seem like much with JJ or a QB not even counted among the many contracts that will need to be added. But we'll also have two drafts to add talent (to include IMO our QBOTF) plus see what we have with the younger players. if we don't get to the nfccg by 2023 we'll probably go into a post-cousins rebuild...that's why i thought that jameson williams in 2022 was important, FYI: he's not expected to be at training camp day 1 because of acl rehab...that post-cousins rebuild could include trading jefferson for some picks to get a qb or other.... we're going to be fighting several teams for the better qb's in the 2023 draft.... looking at spotrac right now and they're showing only $66mm under the cap, so I'm not sure where we are...there are plenty of old-timers to cut in 2024 and free up more cap space, but hell, my recommendation; as tough as it might be for some, root for cousins over the next couple of years.... .
