The coach rating means nothing. I think KOC was exactly what this Vikings team needs. A newer, fresher approach. I liked Zim a lot when he first came in. Still do. But it was time for a change.

Could KOC end up being Les Steckel II? Sure. That’s always the risk with first time coaches. You never know how they will react in a situation they’ve never faced before. But there’s high reward too. A young coach with modern ideas, no link to the past, and a burning desire to prove himself sounds good to me.

And I’ll say another thing. I’m more than ready for a shiny new offense. Out with the boring old predictable. In with some innovation. I don’t know what the current odds are, but Kirk Cousins for MVP is not a bad value bet. He has the smarts and passing ability to execute a Rams style offense at least as effectively as Matthew Stafford did.

Agree that Cousins could run an offense as effectively as Stafford. If not, maybe Mond can do it.

I think the Vikings got the right coach in KOC, I hope he gets the chance or 3, should Cousins nor Mond not work out.

So you're saying Cousins and Mond will both work out?

It’s funny how one person, one idiot, can make you question your loyalty to a team you have lived and died with for decades.

One repulsive, idiotic, moron, makes you question your willingness to suffer his idiocy.

Agree the rating means nothing. Although new coaches with no HC track records should be grouped last.

Agree that KOC was the right type of coach to springboard off of Zimmer. I'm happy to give him a try.

Agree that there is no guarantee of success. Hopefully KOC will be as good a HC as he was a pseudo coordinator / coaching assistant.

Agree that Cousins has the passing ability to execute a Rams style offense.

However, Stafford moving from the Lions to the Rams and finding SB success is not a good predictor for Cousins.

Cousins simply doesn't play as well under pressure or when plays break down, as Stafford has over his career. With worse teams, skill players, OLs and coaches – the excuses usually heaped on Cousins in here – Stafford has more than doubled KCs game winning drives.

Unfortunately, playing under pressure is a requirement for winning in the playoffs. Not as much for collecting good passer ratings.

I really truly sincerely hope that KOC can wave a magic wand and tease greatness under pressure from Cousins.

I'm excited to see it happen, along with bigfoot vs. chupacabra.

The coaches in the McVay coaching tree have been pretty successful. But yeah, I think the key is getting Cousins to accept he is not merely a robotic cog in the machine but instead is the one player who must shoulder the load.

Would that be Dan because he has brought up he can't stand Cousins 117 times because he brings up God and Jesus too much?

Or you because you added to it first?

It faded to the background and you brought it back up. The Politics section was created in part to keep such discussion off of the sports side of the house. Feel free to chime in there as it's quite active.

edit: Zygi? (just checked the roster and didnt see any punters or special teams coaches that vexed me)

Pretty successful coaching tree, yes. No guarantee of short-term success though (Taylor with 6 wins his first two years). Rogers, Burrows, Herbert have not hurt the coaching tree.

Some critical coaching mistakes and growing pains along with some success.

KOC was a good hire. I'm excited to see if he's the real deal or just somebody cashing in on the last two years of Rams' success. [before that, not a lot of predictors for success]

Regardless, I fully expect KOC to help Cousins with his deficiencies / in-game mental approach. IMO that's not the hard part ... our offense is going to hum.

KC reinventing himself as a spontaneous in-the-moment lead dog, not just a worker bee ... as you say, will be the key to game winning success.

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/1/2022 11:10:57 AM)

.
.
Harrison Phillips blossomed as a player last season, particularly in the run game. He finished eighth in ESPN’s run stop win rate in 2021. The Vikings team that finished the 2021 season last in adjusted line yards, second-to-last in ESPN’s run stop win rate and 25th in run defense DVOA, Phillips could make a major impact.

I can't disagree with that take.

- on a side note of curiosity, Adam Zimmer catch on anywhere else in the NFL, yet?

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/6/2022 11:17:58 AM)

Listened to PA on Sirius XM fantasy football in the morning with John Hansen (yesterday)

Some of the things John Hansen and Adam Caplan gleaned plus notes from PA:

The offense will be less battering ram (Defense adjusting after 1st quarter and a quarter and 1/2 of struggles until we adjust).
Irv was a very good blocker as well as receiver until injured
KJ is a great 3rd WR....worst corner of course covering and he now has confidence of Kirk
Kirk kept us in a lot of games when the defense was just aweful last year
KOC will have different game plans every week and less vanilla then Kubiak
Communication was non existent between Zim and Kirk now Kirk and KOC are the opposite....
OLine may have a top 5 tackle combo, Cleveland played well last half of last year and put on weight, Ingram will probably end up at RG by end of year, Davis will probably get the early nod and Reed a very good backup.
Defense may start of slow...5 new starters (Cine, Hicks,Phillips, ZED, and 2nd/3rd Corner/3rd LB (Surratt or Asamoah) and new scheme.
Hoping that the scheming is better to get JJeff more one on one and one game specifically (Baltimore) where their best corner just could not stay with him for the first half but then the Baltimore defense adjusted and our defense couldn't stop them (to prove earlier point).
The defense will be way better as well as the oline. PA specifically mentioned Darrisaw 3-4 weeks after returning, Cleveland, and O'Neil as top notch lineman.

We're going to be able to watch in real time and see just how poor of an NFL coach Mike Zimmer was. Kevin O'Connell is in a great situation. I can't wait to see what unfolds this season.

I like just about everything I see from KOC, my only reservation is he may be too nice of a guy.

Does KOC have the killer instinct, enough competitiveness, enough assholeness to lead a team to a SB victory ?
