ORIGINAL: Bill Jandro I know most are happy we have changed HC's but it's no slam dunk O'Connell will be good. Zim was completely awful this past season but a rookie HC (whom didn't call plays at his last gig as OC) could make plenty of rookie mistakes. So far the McVay coaching tree has produced a couple real good HC's in Lefleur and Taylor. I sure hope we struck paydirt with O'Connell but as a life long Viking fan I'm toning down my expectations. Zimmer was such a strange unlikeable beast ... he had reduced down to an absolute caricature of his worst attributes in 2020 and 2021. His bad traits were there even in his good seasons but its like he coached his best game in the NO 2019 playoff game and then snapped completely. IMO this narrative that he was just horrible period is slightly revisionist. We'll be pretty lucky if KOC ends up with 11-5 and 13-3 records in his first four years, including two NFC north titles and an NFCCG. If he can do that without Zimmer's up and down inconsistency (and crassness), we'll be in great shape. 2021 was the most unwatchable season in vikings' history, and of course, i watched every phucking game...imo; not having zimmer is going to make an enormous difference.... no prevent defense during two-minute drills is worth one win.... not restraining the offense every game is worth one win.... not having zimmer's inept clock managing is worth one win.... unleashing a new offensive system with the 4th best playmakers is worth one win.... nine home games, and an away game in London - where they love us.... that's 12-5, and there's probably another win somewhere in this positive team-chemistry, player-friendly transition.... If that’s your expectation, great. I’m not sure what to expect because KOC has not done this before; I’m not sure what to expect because, while I’m confidant the offense will be good, the defense is a huge question mark (as is ST). Obviously we all want this thing to go right. I think the defense with a new cordinator will improve as the season rolls on. As bad as Zimmer was in HC situations he was a horrible DEF Cord at the end and Spielman and him always sunk cash into the resigning old vets like Barr, Mac Alexander, and Breeland. When you are 28th in defense you get rid of the old guys. Spielman and Zimmer did the exact opposite. Weird Kwesi still has 9-10 million in cap and signed.
