At least he didn't blow a 4 TD lead.

Some Raiders fans have playdough for brains.

Mullens is a journeyman back-up QB. That's all.

He high-jumped the lowest bar in the league .. Mannion ... by half a millimeter. Maybe more but really, not that much more ...

Better than Mannion and better than Mond at this moment ... that's all that matters.

But ... We waited too long to address the situation and there weren't a lot of options.

Exactly.

I think, for when we made it, its a very good move. We probably moved from having the worst back-up situation in the league to the bottom 3rd. And with our skill position players, Mullens can probably keep us afloat for a couple games if Kirk is out.

But I don't think Kirk is in danger of being Wally Pipped, and I doubt Mullens will be the guy we turn to when we part ways with Kirk in another 2 seasons or so.

I like what he brings (Mullens); really reminds me of Case Keenum size and the way he plays. Not afraid to be agressive.
I don't recall too much was said about Case when he was signed as a backup. Just a solid move.
That is all most think of this move.

I’m teally happy we made a deal. We had to do something.

And yes, Mullens has a little scrappiness to him like Keenum … but lets be honest, Mullens is no Keenum … Keenum isnt even lKeenum 2017 althoigh he started a full season before coming to MN (and half a season the year before that).

Keenum is an established backup … Mullens is trying to cling on to a roster. I hope he works out. I wouldn’t stop looking at backups.

I'd imagine they're very active at almost all positions. CB, IOL, TE, EDGE, ILB, IDL

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/24/2022 4:01:04 PM)

Didn't even think about the "Kwesi Factor:

The acquisition is functionally a risk-free trade that doesn’t activate unless Mullens makes the roster, so it’s a threat to job security for both veteran Sean Mannion and 2021 third-round pick Kellen Mond, but not an outright rejection. Still, it’s likely that Mullens wins the backup job behind Kirk Cousins over Mannion and Mond.

Not only was head coach Kevin O’Connell down on both backups following the preseason game against the 49ers, both Mond and Mannion had been underwhelming throughout training camp. The regular-season showings favor Mullens as well. Mullens has a career passer rating of 87.3 and has posted an adjusted net yards per attempt of 6.19. Mannion, on the other hand, has a career passer rating of 66.2 and an ANYA of 3.68 – well below that of most backups around the league.

The Vikings were able to see Mullens in their preseason game against the Raiders, and Mullens overlapped tenures with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in both San Francisco and Cleveland. On top of that, Mullens has experience in the Shanahan offense with both the 49ers and Browns, which is very similar to the McVay/O’Connell system the Vikings will be using this season.

The 27-year-old Southern Miss product should be an instant upgrade over what the Vikings have as a more decisive and accurate quarterback than either Mond or Mullens.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/24/2022 4:17:26 PM)

I mean afterwords the conecction points itself out but when we were all wondering who to target someone could have sleuthed it out.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/24/2022 5:42:57 PM)

Hopefully, none of our backups need to play, or start, any significant # of games.

Two seasons from now, wtf are we going to do?

Back up a semi load of guaranteed money, again, for KC?

Or will this team finally quit putting bandaids on the QB position and find a franchise level player, like KC has, Green Bay has, Buffalo, Dallas, etc…

Paying huge money to a career .500 “ franchise” guy like KC, annoys me to no end.

It doesn’t help that he is a hypocrite and fool in everything except bleeding money from football franchises, with mediocre play and results.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/24/2022 5:51:35 PM)

"Some Raiders fans have playdough for brains"

Sure, but it's possible that they are correct. Some of them have doubts about Carr, like Viking fans have with Kirk.

But both QBs should flourish this season, we shall see. Maybe they meet in the Super Bowl.

Nobody in their right mind thinks Mullens is on level with Carr. Nobody with an openly hostile rejection of Cousins would call Mullens-types on par with KC.

Carr and KC have their weaknesses for sure … but come on, you brought up the word ‘mancrush’ earlier and denied it ... I'm not so sure ...

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/24/2022 7:34:01 PM)

Rich Gannon with Patrick Reusse

Yes, Mond is impressive as a physical presence at 6-3, 215 pounds, with mobility; yes, he could probably get a better idea of what's going-on out there if he stayed in the picture for playing time, but that ship sailed Monday with the addition of Nick Mullens, a journeyman at age 27.

Meaning, third-rounder Mond at the ripe age of 23 is neither the Vikings' backup quarterback of today, nor the quarterback of the future.OK, Mond may stick around as a third-teamer, but the NFL's quarterback train moves too fast for those getting meaningless practice repetitions in Season 2 to someday become The Man with his original team.

Rich Gannon, years of apprenticeship, MVP quarterback late in career, astute media commentator on the game, was asked about this cruel world in which quarterbacks can be shuffled aside in a hurry.

"I came into the league as a quarterback out of Delaware's wing-T offense,'' Gannon said. "The Patriots took me in the fourth round and wanted to look at me as a running back, or defensive back.

"I complained and was traded to the Vikings. I knew nothing about NFL concepts, and we probably had 15 passing plays and two or three protections. Now, they might have 100 pass plays and 15 protections.

"And these young quarterbacks; their job is on the line every day, and if you can't keep up … you're better off selling life insurance.''

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2022 12:30:54 AM)

That same mentality, is rampant in fan speak forums, everywhere..
Doesn’t matter if it’s here, Reddit, PFF forums or Vikings.free forums.net.

Mond is hated because he missed a wide open touchdown, thru an interception, made some shit show back foot throw..

It doesn’t matter what tools he may bring to a crippled, statute loving, pocket based offense, with a craptastic offensive line team..

It doesn’t matter that his $$ number for the sext 2 seasons is pocket change on a 3 rd round draft position..

What matters is he doesn’t put up HOF numbers, throw laser dimes in traffic and double coverage..hasn’t thrown a 40 yard bomb to a guy behind coverage for a flashy dagger strike TD...

What matters is he is not an insta Prescott.. insta Mahomes, insta josh Allen..insta Joe Burrow…

He has thrown less than 50 passes in the nfl, and all but three of those were in preseason games, without starting caliber receivers, other than Bisi Johnson, and that’s stretching the starting wide receiver pool, pretty wide and shallow, talent wise.

Young Mobil guy… cheap contract..

23 years old..

Throw him the **** out of the league.. he’s not a win instantly the mvp, guy..

What ever…
Hope we hit the lottery with our first round QBOTF pick in one of the next two drafts..

When was the last time we hit above average, possible career winning record, franchise type guy, on a quarterback, in the draft, right out of the gate, again?

Let’s do that, again next April.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2022 12:38:50 AM)

I know Mond is not NFL starter ready..

He is Young, Mobil, has an arm, and costs us less in dead money and cap hit than KC gets guaranteed per game.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2022 1:45:25 AM)

Good points Dan.

Nobody in their right mind thinks Mullens is on level with Carr. Nobody with an openly hostile rejection of Cousins would call Mullens-types on par with KC.

Nobody thought Nick Foles would win a Super Bowl, and who in their right mind would think Keenum would take the team further than Bradford or Bridgewater ever did.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2022 2:35:47 AM)

Tom, I am not saying Mullens is better than Carr or Cousins, just that he might take the Vikings farther than either Carr or Cousins get in their career.

I don't think Mullens is a bottom feeder backup, I would put him in about the middle, between 15 and 20.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2022 6:42:06 AM)

Ok Marty … nothing is impossible …

meaning its possible, in fact likely, even probable, that Mullens will spontaneously combust out of his slimy low-performing back-up pubescent larval form into a magnificent fiery butterfly … and win us a SB or two during KCs next covid episode. Before returning to the bench.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/25/2022 7:43:53 AM)
