I zero upside in a defensive coach. None.

Why? DC or OC, there is no guarantee a good coordinator will make a good head coach.

Get a good OC and he will be hired away.

Just the way I feel after all the years of a defensive guy being a dumbass when it comes to offense.

The best teams seem to be lead by offensive coaches.

Pick up a DC from the scrap heap of head coaches.

SF defense doesn't seem very disciplined to me .... hmmm

My updated Vikings head coach wishlist:

1.) Jim Harbaugh
2.) Raheem Morris
3.) Doug Pederson
4.) DeMeco Ryans

He is also ok with Rams OC

If Jim Harbaugh becomes the coach, I may have to consider rooting for a different team moving forward. Can't stand the guy. A hiring of Harbaugh would be a sign that our new GM doesn't know how to check the temperature in the room. Harbaugh is a Michigan guy. Nobody hates a Michigan guy any more than a Gopher fan base.

In addition, Harbaugh is one of the guys that almost never lasts more than five years anywhere he goes. Partly because everyone within any organization hates him within 12 months. He rubs people the wrong way the same way Lane Kiffin rubs people the wrong way.

Harbaugh is a non-starter for me. I'd hire Kiffin before Harbaugh.

Gophers haven't been good enough to hate Michigan the way Ohio State does. OSU hates them more. Not even close. Remember, most of Viking fandom embraced Brett Favre when he took us to the NFC championship game.

Not this Viking..fan..

I knew Favrey was a false god..

One good season. In the end he set us back a ways.

How exactly did he do that? If anything he took a pretty average team and had a great season. I wasn't aware we mortgaged future draft picks did we?

Chris Olson -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/30/2022 9:02:51 PM)

So apparently there are second interviews this week for O'Connell and Ryans...

I would guess if Ryans is the the guy, we'll know this week

If they like O'Connell, would they wait to hire him after the SB? or announce an agreement sooner?

Still think Harbaugh is not happening in Minnesota

What does Kevin O'Connell do? That is McVay's offense in every way.

I liked the toughness that SF displays. I'll take their DC over O'Connell.

By wasting two years. Honestly I hated us acquiring him. He was terrible in NY. I thought besides hating him he was washed up. He surprised me with one great season. The next year he was what I expected. Getting to the NFC championship was nice so getting him was a mixed bag.

Set us back? From what? Gus Frerotte before or Ponder after? 12-4 in 2009 was the high point of the Tice Chili Frazier years. Easily.

I disliked Farve before … couldn’t get on board initially but then the team started rolling. As far as 2010 … yeah he should have stayed retired … I blame Chili for the shameless rectuitment and prying him loose for an extra year that Farve didn’t have in the tank.

Bilichick is the GOAT and has proven to be a guy that is willing to adjust to an offensive league, as has Nick Saban in college. Saban admitted publicly you need to be able to score 30+ points to win at a high level. Both these guys have changed with the times and are a rare breed in defensive coaches that shifted to an offensive philosophy.

Dungey won a Super Bowl 15 years ago.

Tomlin won a Super Bowl 13 years ago.

Look at Pete Carroll, his is a defensive coach that is stuck in that idea and cant embrace the need of a dynamic offense first system. Seattle sucks even with a top shelf QB.

That's ancient history in terms of NFL rules to promote offense. I can't think of any defensive head coaches that have had success with a revolving door at the OC, which is what will happen if a defensive coach comes in and finds an OC that turns Cousins around. He would be hired away in a heartbeat.

IMO hire a defensive head coach and the most important hire instantly becomes the OC and not the HC, I really couldn't give a damn who the head coach is if its a defensive guy.

Was Belichick a Def coach or not? You can twist it to fit your premise ... but your point argues the opposite – a defensive coach is capable adapting to the game.

Belichick, Tomlin, Carrol, Vrabel, McDermott ... by any standard, currently in the top 10-12 HCs as we speak are all former DCs. John Harbaugh was a ST coach.

We can all agree that, on paper, a good young OC is the way to go ... but there are so many qualities that go into being a good HC – if you interview 3 brilliant young OCs and they all come across as jackasses or too offensive centric ... you hire the best person to run the team, offense defense ST personnel game mgmt etc etc etc.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/31/2022 9:26:19 AM)

I want a younger offensive minded guy..

Similar to Taylor, McVay, or Shanahan..

The league rules favor offense, dinosaurs play prevent defenses.

Offensive coaching eats that crap for quick snack, every down, at any distance.

You need to play good defense, but HEAD COACHING should consider the offense as the key to winning, in the current nfl rules era.

I like Raheem Morris, Kevin O'Connell, and DeMeco Ryans add Pederson and Harbaugh to the mix and just remember we were 1 win from making the playoffs and look at Zimmer's time management alone we are a playoff team.

Those five are a vast improvement over Zimmer.

There is one issue; rumor is that Flores had communication issues with the GM. Probably a non starter once they checked him out (that is just a guess though and I like what he has done also).

Then you have the Raiders, whose team loved interim coach Rich Bissacia. They hired Josh McDaniel and the entire team is now pissed off.

That guy Bissacia did a phenomenal job with the toughest of conditions. The Vikings should immediately be in contact with him.

Sounds like Jax is interviewing him. Any of the 5 on their list improves where they were at....Pederson must be kind of prick to not be considered.

Flores and Pederson didn't work well with the GM so that might be it.

I'm totally cool with a D guy as long as he hires a good offensive mind and leaves them the hell alone. We are all chaffed at D guys because of Zimmer's lack of total success. His biggest problem was not that he was a D guy at heart. His biggest issue was that he couldn't keep his defensive tendencies off the offense. He was a total control freak.

Don't know how you could be against Harbaugh with this post.

ronhextall -> RE: Our New Head Coach (1/31/2022 2:20:17 PM)

Harbaugh wins and a former QB. He will get the most out of the QB position. We don't need to worry about " If the former DC now the HC will let the new OC do what he wants " and that's assuming the OC is any good. Harbaugh eliminates about 3 layers of gray area.

The fact that he might run a little hot and only last 4 years is IMO a positive.

Jim Harbaugh is in “serious talks” with Minnesota for the open head coach position. The belief is Harbaugh will interview with Minnesota on Wednesday, with the hope of a contract offer.
