I find this, from NFL Football Operations, interesting:

Replay officials or designated members of the officiating team in New York generally can assist until the play clock is at 20 seconds remaining.

Figure Buffalo wasn't wasting too much time WRT to the play clock.

I was wondering how the media was going to perceive this game...

So much more talk about the Bills being in trouble or that they lost it, etc, rather than the Vikes stepping up

Some saying it was a statement game for Minnesota, but they always add the question marks...

Is this the turning point? or just a good win? will we see them one and done in the playoffs? blah blah blah

Still not getting the respect, probably because of Kirk, but I'd rather keep flying under the radar, if that is possible at 8-1

ESPN has a lengthy piece that talks about all of that:

Barnwell: Making sense of the NFL's game of the season, from Jefferson's amazing catch to Buffalo's head-scratching flaw

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35021856/was-vikings-bills-best-game-nfl-season-explaining-ending-justin-jefferson-catch-josh-allen-struggles-kirk-cousins-rise

Are the Vikings good?
Sunday's win gave both sides ammunition for their argument. If you're a Vikings believer, you saw a team fight back against one of the NFL's best teams down 17 points in the second half and win. The Vikings overcame adversity, picked up big plays when they needed, forced two critical Allen interceptions and pulled out a game in which they were seen as underdogs on a national stage against Case Keenum, let alone an MVP candidate in Allen.

If you're more of a skeptic, well, you can tell yourself an entirely different story. The Vikings fell behind by multiple touchdowns and needed one long touchdown run by Dalvin Cook to get back in the game before the greatest catch of Jefferson's life extended it. Then, after they were stuffed at the goal line, the Bills gifted them a touchdown with a botched snap. Ed Donatell's defense then failed to stop the Bills from driving for a tying field goal. While the Vikings took the lead in overtime, the Bills were driving to match or win before a mental mistake by Allen handed Minnesota yet another close victory.

I fall somewhere in the middle on this question. Pulling out a win in Buffalo is impressive, no matter how they come about that victory. Since acquiring Diggs in 2020, the Bills had been 19-4 at home and 20-3 when scoring at least 30 points. They had been 8-0 when both were true. Even if it took a well-timed fumble, this is the sort of win the Vikings can point to as the first line on their 2022 résumé.

I guess I fall somewhere in the middle, too

I want to believe, but Vikings fans have been burned so often...

Last 3 seemingly charmed seasons 2017, 2009, 1998...

98 and 09 we're very good teams...not necessarily charmed seasons

Keenum was a charmed season

JMO

Even Zimmer was likeable in 2017 Doc.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 2:49:31 PM)

This is from Wikipedia so don't know the accuracy. Not trying to make a point, but learn.

During a scoring play (starting in 2011), turnovers (starting in 2012), or after the two-minute warning of each half, and in overtime, reviews can take place only if the replay official, who sits in the press box and monitors the network broadcast of the game, determines that a play needs review; coaches may not challenge during these times. In those cases, the replay official will contact the referee by a specialized electronic pager with a vibrating alert. If a review takes place during that time while the clock is running, the clock will stop for the review, and then it will start running once the ball is set and ready for play. Starting with the 2010 season (and later in 2017), any reviews with the clock running inside one minute (now inside the two-minute warning) will have a 10-second rundown, which can be voided if either team uses a timeout.

One concern about replay that was addressed some years ago was the situation where a coach sought a review of a non-challengeable call (such as being forced out of bounds, or in some cases to challenge a runner down by contact). Before the rule was clarified, a team lost the challenge and a time-out. The current rule does not penalize a team in such a case, provided the rule is not abused or taken advantage of.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 3:11:57 PM)

Rule change for 2021 for the press box aka booth official:

Owners rejected more robust rule proposals in relation to the expansion of replay officials’ authority. For example, the Baltimore Ravens proposed a rule that would have created a booth umpire.

Instead of these robust rules, the owners decided to take the more moderate step in giving the existing replay officials, who sit in the press box of each stadium, the power to consult with on-field referees on “specific, objective aspects of a play when clear and obvious video evidence is present,” according to the language of the rule.

This rule does not mean replay officials will be able to reverse calls or throw flags own their own, but they can advise referees based on what they’ve seen on broadcast replays. Before, replay officials were limited to providing insight only for plays that were under review. Coaches will not have to throw challenge flags to get replay officials to review plays. Replay officials this coming season will be able to provide on-field referees with information on plays such as completed or intercepted passes, the location of the ball relative to the boundary or end line, and whether a player is down by contact.

So they'd have to see the broadcast replay (if there was one; might not be one in a hurry up), the replay would have to provide clear and obvious evidence, and provide assistance up to 20 seconds prior to the snap. That's just the stadium guy. Who the he!! knows what NY does (I don't).

I give up on wanting to learn about all that.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 3:19:50 PM)

My two cents.

Holy shit what a catch.

We went into a hostile environment, against a team that EVERYONE was picking for the Superbowl, fell behind, predictably, and then just like almost every other game this year, fought, scratched, and clawed theirr way back into the game. Overcame some terrible officiating and got a gift fumble when the game was lost to save their bacon. I was content with the "moral" victory of making a good game of it against buffalo. When that play happened I believed in magic again. Something special seems to be going on here. I want to remain skeptical because like many Vikings fans I have been burned too many times...but this season just seems different.

Bad plays don't kill this team. They put it behind them and fight back, they keep coming. They don't give up until the last second ticks off the clock.

Holy shit what a catch.

The officiating was once again terrible. All day long their DBs were mauling our WRs. No flags. Booth barely touches a guy in a critical moment and PI!!!! They don't review what should have been a non catch? They MISS 12 men on the field? It was bad all day long. and we overcame it and still won.

Holy shit what a catch.

On the catch I keep referring to, Cousins told JJ he was likely to just throw one up for him. JJ responded with one of the greatest catches you will ever see. and it gave us a first down after a 4th and 18. He doesn't haul that in and we lose. It's that simple. So in a most critical moment they went to their best playmaker and he more than delivered.

HOLY SHIT WHAT A CATCH.

The last 15 minutes of game time in this game was filled with holy shit moments. The kind of moments that make a season magical. And we came out on top. I have been grinning ear to ear since 4pm yesterday.

Oh and one more thing

HOLY SHIT WHAT A CATCH

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 3:26:54 PM)

On the play with the catch, Hockenson looked pretty open, IF Kurt had went to Hock right away, I think he would have gotten the first down.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 3:29:41 PM)

I am hoping the win over the Bills will give the Vikings some cred, and subsequently more fair treatment from the officials in remaining games, including the playoffs.

I felt like the officials were biased against the Vikings for the most part, with calls and non-calls. But it didn't seem quite as bad in the 4th quarter, and in OT, if you overlook a couple mis-steps[8D].

Great post TGS.

I'd say the catch is #3 all time. Tyree's and Edelman's are 1 and 2 bc that were crazy catches in big moments of the biggest game.

Move over OBJ.

I love the announcers call on it. THERE'S NO WAY!

Way.

We should get t-shirts symbolizing it and this team.

WAY!

How many MN fans shut off the TV after the failed 4th down sneak?

Not many I would hope. I thought we still had a great chance to win. Just get the safety.

If the refs were swaying the game and not "letting them play" Shelly would have been flagged for PI and the Bills would have been 1st and goal to go.

By then we would have been 60 points ahead after the Bills got called for 30 pass interference penalties if they had of just called it by the rules.

It was clear PI to me so if they wanted to ding us all they had to do was call it.

So I guess even though I think they sucked they did us right there.

One time they let us get away with it. 30 times they let them get away with it. I guess we just should have been grabbing their jerseys every play as well all game long.

Bingo!!!!

Their DBs were holding, interfering all day long. Ne'er a flag was thrown. How many flags? Ne'er.

I will say Kirk completed some amazing passes yesterday.

I think if the defender gets there early, comes from the backside, and the instant before the ball gets there, gets his arms around the WR where is one of his arms is preventing one of the WRs arms from going upwards to try and catch the ball, that is interference.

I was told during the game that that was a clean defensive play. I think it fits the definition of interference.

Amen Marty. Grabbing the receiver anywhere before the ball gets there is the very definition of PI. They were mostly grabbing our jerseys and pulling. I mean plain as day fistfuls of Jersey almost every play. Their DB coach has to be teaching it because every one of them was doing it. Just daring the refs to call it and they didn't.

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 4:02:51 PM)

And now the Vikes open as a home dog to DAL. WTF?!

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 4:04:49 PM)

What I saw was 2 very good teams making plays.

I don't get to see Diggs and Allen any more but we beat a Super Bowl favorite at their place....had to be a big confidence booster.

Doesn't matter about the holds or couple of missed calls...we gutted it out and will get cred from refs in future games.

I see a team crying less about flags and focusing on winning. One thing I see about JJ and Thielen; less crying. That gains cred. This team is day and night difference when it comes to selfishness.

I see it in Kirk...he is trying to make plays when needed/last year there would be more checkdowns and passes thrown away. The whole team was cheering JJ on that catch.

KOC has Thielen and JJ do a little then get your ass back to the huddle and make a play. This team has that intangible....

I remember CC and Moss; even when winning that wasn't the norm.

Yeah let it go 30 times when the Bills do it. Call it the one time the Vikings do it.

Game Ball to Greg Joseph...

I said this live on game day thread as it happened... Missing the PAT forced Vikes to play much more aggressive, and lead to the crazy ending.

Plus he then made the game winner from same spot on field...

-----

NOW today go out and find a kicker that can make his kicks, he is a liability in playoffs

Game ball and a plane ticket it to go with it? ... crazy how many kicks this guy is missing

And he couldn't kick off past the 10, so they had to start squib kicking them.

He's not so much Greg the Leg anymore

Is he injured? He always had plenty of leg.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 4:25:38 PM)

8 games...7 if we're resting players (or off) week 18..to find that next level. One where we're turning it on qtrs 2 and 3 putting games OOH. Of course I'm worried about playing a WC game against SF and finding ourselves needing to come back but the big plays don't happen. I commend them fir what they've done but it's killer on mind and body.

I know KOC is aiming there. Hope we find the target.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (11/14/2022 4:27:48 PM)

Re kicker. I think we're going home with the girl we brought to the dance. I think we'll throw the support to him in hopes he straightens things out.

KOC has backups prepared on both sides. Brandel played the last quarter. Shelley, Boyd, and Booth

Team is so better prepared and seems organized and focused even on the road when most needed.

Helps to have that veteran HOF cb playing well.

Peterson has to be roiding. How else can his resurgence be explained?

Mostly being a heady veteran.

I remember when they signed him; I was thinking; more hoping it was similar to the Charles Woodson signing for GB. He has shown he still has it.

Back in his prime he goes yard on that first INT

IDGAF about what the media thinks, power rankings, etc... I want wins and a SB trophy!

That was a solid win that showed lots of guts! I have enough "moral victory" losses when one bad bounce or bad call doomed us. I'll take the win, thank you very much, sir.
