Za’Darius Smith signed a prototypical team-friendly deal in March when he switched NFC North teams and joined the Vikings after three seasons with the Packers. That contract had a low cap hit for the Vikings in 2022, only $3,343,136. For a star pass rusher, that is comically low.

His cap hit might be low, but he is earning a lot during his first Vikings season, $10 million, to be exact. The contract was a masterpiece by cap guru Rob Brzezinksi. In addition to his yearly cash payment, Smith can earn money via incentives. The Vikings added to his contract that he would make $500,000 after recording 8.5 sacks, plus an additional $250,000 after 10,5 sacks and another $250,000 after 12.5 sacks. With two games to go, Smith currently has 10 sacks after the first 15 games, so the next couple of games are important for Smith’s pockets.

The incentive was declared “not likely to be earned” because Smith didn’t meet those milestones in the 2021 campaign. Therefore, the incentives count against the 2023 cap space.

2023 is apparently the year they unveil the Sistine Chapel equivalent of masterpieces.

Maybe Phil will notice the "$10 million, to be exact" reference to Smith's first-year earnings here.

In the Buffalo game people were trying to compare JJ's and Diggs' catch.

SC plays of the year JJ with the #1 play...Diggs not in the top 100.

Diggs made a big play on the losing side. JJ snatched impossible from the unyielding will of the gods. Slight difference.

I thought it was cool they kept showing the two catches back to back. And a mild comparison was worthy since they were in the same game.

The backward leaning, one handed catch is becoming quite common, even in college. But wow, JJ's catch had a couple of extra elements/variables that sent it off the charts.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/30/2022 8:54:22 AM)

The announcer Joe Davis had a great call/reaction to the play that took it to another level.

That and Bucks call on the Minneapolis miracle are tops for me.

So Smith has earned $10M in 2022. $3,343,136 in base salary, could max out $1M in incentives. Where is the other $5,657,864? An unmentioned signing bonus?

In 2023 and 2024.

We're likely going to have to cut him and eat 3.3M in Dead Cap after this year or rework his contract.

POTENTIAL OUT: 2023, 1 YR, $10,000,000; $3,333,334 DEAD CAP

$6.45M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2022 salary)
Per Game Active Bonus: $176,470

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/zadarius-smith-16848

Wonder if they will create a couple of void years to kick the cap can down the road?

Yeah, players have and will continue to be rentals until the tough decisions are made to get ahead of the cap. We also then have to rely on old, mid-tier players in free agency. That's not even factoring in keeping our own emerging players.

Our ace seems to be Void Years:
Yes, Hunter $11.2 million
Cousins $12.5 million
Theilen $2.3 million (with obscene contract numbers coming up)
Others/TBD?

O'Neill will begin his $20 million per year run starting in 2023.

Rather than lease, the Wilfs bought their first armored car for JJ's contract.

Clearly you didn't even know about the Contract Notes! You know, the place where other untold millions are specified. Line by line.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/30/2022 3:46:22 PM)

Anyone see the Eagles dropping the #1 seed? Hurts may not play and maybe maybe the Saints find something to play for this weekend and upset them...but no way the Giants lose at home to the Colts giving them a reason to play week 18 against the Eagles and the suddenly beat them on the road.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/30/2022 4:20:47 PM)

Minshew had a couple of good years with Jax in 2019-20. Not enough to be a QB to build around, but certainly good enough to be a more than capable backup. And he's a pretty interesting and cool cat.

Philly D also steps up. They keep the #1 seed.

jbusse -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/30/2022 5:04:49 PM)

Interesting take by Ben Goessling (maybe it's common knowledge) that one reason why the Vikings did poorly at the end of seasons under Zimmer is he practiced them too hard throughout the season. Tired them out. KOC relies more on walk throughs and less on physical workouts.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/30/2022 5:06:00 PM)

I'd love to see - wouldn't we all - the #1 seed come down to the final week.

- Freekin' Saints owe us that much
