Interesting take by Ben Goessling (maybe it's common knowledge) that one reason why the Vikings did poorly at the end of seasons under Zimmer is he practiced them too hard throughout the season. Tired them out. KOC relies more on walk throughs and less on physical workouts.

That explains the back seven on defense. Donatell is probably catching a nap during practice. Maybe speed 'em up a bit.

Cris Carter used to say to practice how you play. Conversely, I always liked Bobby Dandridge's take on practice: I'm an artist not a house painter.

I'd love to see - wouldn't we all - the #1 seed come down to the final week.

- Freekin' Saints owe us that much

The NFL would love every team being "in the hunt" during week 17, but at least they get the intrigue of playoff seedings.

As an NFL fan, I would like to see a fully healthy Philly v Dallas in the NFCCG. Or maybe Philly v SF if the latter has a dominant run (in addition to their 8-0 record since the beatdown by KC).

And based on the point spreads of late, I don't think the country wants or cares to see Minnesota early in the playoffs. But the longer the run goes on (hopefully) - especially if they are last minute wins - the interest could get crazy. And while I don't believe there are flat out ref influences, I think there may be some subtle messaging by the NFL to the refs.

Our crazy season would be a huge deal for the two-week SB run up, and the NFL knows it. A built-in 'story' if you will.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/30/2022 5:45:42 PM)

That's an interesting topic. Balance is needed for sure. There's lot's of players on a football team. I'm sure finding the right mixture of intensity both physical and mental is a trick. I would think having a good locker room would be very helpful the longer the season gets.

So Elway is sorta known as a comeback king.

I wonder how many comebacks he had during the regular season, the seasons where he lost the Super Bowl, versus the years he WON the Super Bowl?

Anyone good at finding stats like that ?

Doubtful those guys give us that much of a break on salaries. Their agents probably find them double those amounts on open market.

Probably best to go with youth and speed anyway, except maybe for Peterson, who's aging very well.

Overall PFF Scores

You may not think much of PFF, but the trajectory is consistent with the eye test. Going forward, also should expect some reversion toward the recent mean for Peterson.

Agree with both replies. At such salaries I think the agents would convey the team is basically writing the players off as filler. As alluded to, wanting in on the open market will suddenly look like the better option.

Hicks is gone. Theilen and Smith are the legacy players who are first up for the chopping block. Then Kendricks and Peterson. Target Cook for a lower salary.

The IOL sucks, the DL needs work. Sigh.

Less $. More speed on D. More talent for the IOL. Scrap the 3-4.

We sure are not going to gain any respect if we don't win in GB. Win there, take care of Chicago, win the first round and then we'll still be the cute little team that doesn't quit. Have a chance in the 4th q v. SF and the majority of the country will be on their feet screaming for a Viking win.

Come on, one time!

Great post. That certainly reflects results from the eye test. The only thing that isn't on a downward trajectory for most of these players are their salaries. If for example Smith didn't have any history here, fans would be screaming for him to be benched and bashing the regime for an obscene cap hit.

Circle of life, let go, it's a business, etc. Besides it's kind of par for the course that most players won't ever see the big $ tail end of huge, multi-year contracts.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (12/31/2022 9:58:38 AM)

Smith and Kendricks gave it their all, often in a violent manner. Those hits pile up and speed up the aging process.

Even the great Earl Campbell, who powered through everyone including gang tackles is not immune:

Campbell has experienced various physical ailments in his later life. By 2001, at age 46, he could barely close his fist due to arthritis in his hands.[87] He developed foot drop due to nerve damage in his legs, and has difficulty bending his back and knees.[87][88] He was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in 2009.[89] Because of his difficulty walking he uses a cane or a walker, and for longer distances a wheelchair.[5][90] Campbell at first maintained the ailments were genetic,[90][91] but said in 2012, "I think some of it came from playing football, playing the way I did."[85][92]

In 2009, Campbell became addicted to painkillers prescribed for his spinal stenosis, taking as many as ten OxyContin pills a day with Budweiser.[89][92][93] He went through rehabilitation and broke his addiction the same year, and since publicizing the incident in 2013 has spoken out about the dangers of substance abuse.[89]

Countless former players have similar stories, no doubt. If there's one group that's gotten the short end of the stick in terms of the many $billions generated by the NFL, it's former players with health issues directly related to playing football. If it's not CTE, it's any of a myriad of physical illnesses.

i was approaching next season like we're blowing the team up in 2024 and don't want to engage in any new long-term deals in 2023 - apart from jefferson, maybe....

i don't think thielen, smith, and kendricks have much value to a new team....

It's sad that a guy like him never made generation changing money. And guys like Ryan Leaf and Akili Smith did.

For my money ...

A win today against a team that is playing well, with a lot at stake, with a top tier QB, in their house, sweeping a division rival ... will knock the teeth out of my beat-down expectations. I may start leaning towards playoff glory.

Losing this game, especially being outplayed ... will leave with me with very little hope against a serious playoff contender (SF Phi Dal and at that point GB).

Hurt them. Please.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/1/2023 1:15:59 PM)

Colts are going to hand the Giants their playoff spot leaving nothing to play for next week against the Eagles.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (1/1/2023 2:02:44 PM)

Look for the zebra's to absolutely hose the Vikings today.

The NFL badly wants the week 18 Det/GB game to mean something. Det will get hosed in this game as well.

We will have to beat GB soundly in order to take the zebras out of the picture.

Saints looked offside on that 4th down stop.

Gotta at least get this game to go right...
